Jomon Tunnel is said to be haunted by the spirits of people who died after being forced into brutal labor.
In 1968, the Tokachi-oki earthquake damaged the tunnel walls. During the repair work, human bones were reportedly found inside the wall, with the remains standing upright. It is also said that a large number of human bones were discovered near the tunnel entrance.
Some of the remains are said to have shown signs of injuries caused by violence. This has led to a grim question often repeated in local rumors: were laborers who collapsed from the harsh working conditions left untreated and buried alive where they fell?
Perhaps because so many strange incidents were said to have occurred here, a memorial for those who died during the construction of Jomon Tunnel was erected in 1980.

過酷な労働を強いられて亡くなった人たちの霊が出ると言われている。1968年十勝沖地震で壁面が損傷し、その改修工事の際、壁から立ったままの人骨が発見されたという。また入口付近でも大量の人骨が発見されたらしい。人骨の一部には暴力による損傷が見られているという。当時、過酷な労働で倒れた労働者たちは治療されることもなく、そのまま生き埋めにされたのだろうか。奇妙な現象があまりにも多発しすぎたためだろうか、1980年に常紋トンネル工事殉難者追悼碑が建てられた。
