English Version
Many horror fans visiting Okinawa may be curious about SSS, often described online as one of the island’s most frightening haunted spots. If you actually try to understand where it is, the location can be confusing: Okinawa is not laid out like a dense city, and without a map or local knowledge, places like this are not easy to identify.
Where SSS Is Said to Be
SSS is said to be near Fuchaku in Onna Village, across from Moon Beach. The approach often described is from National Route 58, up the slope beside Convenience Store COCO!, near the address 573-1 Fuchaku, Onna, Kunigami District, Okinawa.
At first glance, it does not look like the kind of place people would call Okinawa’s scariest haunted spot. The area is not a deep, dark forest, and it does not immediately feel ominous. You may find yourself wondering, “Is there really a haunted place here?”
From the road, the path toward the supposed training ground continues uphill for about ten minutes. There are ordinary homes on both sides, and even scuba diving reception areas nearby. If you did not already know the rumors, you would probably never guess that a famous haunted location was supposed to be in the area.
After climbing the slope, a roped-off section suddenly appears. The surrounding forest looks mostly normal, but this particular area is enclosed with rope tied in an unusual way. Around this point, foot traffic becomes almost nonexistent, and many people say the atmosphere begins to change.
Even so, up to that point, it still may not feel especially like a haunted spot.
Continuing farther along the path, you enter the wooded area and eventually reach an open space with a fairly large building. It looks like a place that someone has maintained. Across from that building is a descending stairway whose end cannot be seen clearly, along with a vivid red warning sign that says entry beyond that point is forbidden.
That red warning sign alone gives the place an unsettling feeling, as if something serious lies beyond it. According to the local rumors, the area below is the true training ground associated with Okinawan yuta, spiritual mediums in Okinawan tradition. This is the place often referred to as SSS, the feared sacred site of the yuta.
A Place Surrounded by Rumors
SSS is often introduced as one of the scariest haunted spots in Okinawa. Some stories claim that even spiritual practitioners dislike going there, which has fed rumors that the number of spirits in the area may be unusually high.
For that reason, it is not the kind of place people should approach casually or as a joke. There are also claims that local Okinawan TV programs have been reluctant to cover it, which has only strengthened its reputation as a dangerous or taboo location.
Okinawa has more haunted places than many visitors expect, and SSS is frequently mentioned as one of the most intense among them.
That said, if you go only as far as the public approach, the area does not necessarily feel haunted at first. It is near a national highway, and much of the route passes ordinary surroundings. However, stories say that once people go beyond the no-entry sign, the air suddenly feels colder and the mood changes sharply. Those who believe they are sensitive to spirits may feel that they should not continue.
There are also accounts of people feeling sick or physically unwell after visiting SSS. These are rumors and personal experiences rather than verified facts, but they are part of what has made the location so infamous.
Safety Note for Visitors
If you are interested in SSS or other haunted places in Okinawa, treat the area with respect. Do not enter restricted zones, pass no-entry signs, trespass on private property, disturb residents, or go into unfamiliar wooded areas at night. Okinawa’s sacred and rumored spiritual sites are not theme parks, and some locations may be culturally sensitive, unsafe, or off-limits.
Use this information as a reference for understanding the legend, not as encouragement to enter prohibited areas.
For those interested in Okinawa’s haunted folklore, SSS remains one of the island’s most talked-about ghost spots. Note: Parts of this article have been updated to organize the information.
