Shijushida Dam in Iwate Prefecture became widely known after a tragic 2016 incident in which two high school girls were believed to have jumped from the dam. But according to local rumors, the dam had a dark reputation long before that. It has often been described as a place associated with suicide, and locals have also feared it as a dangerous haunted spot.
Stories range from ghost photos to white hands reaching out of the dam water and dragging people in. Below is a look at the history, incidents, and reported paranormal phenomena connected to Shijushida Dam in Morioka, Iwate.
Where Shijushida Dam is located
Shijushida Dam is in Ueda Matsuyashiki, Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture. It is the only dam built on the main stream of the Kitakami River, the largest river in the Tohoku region.
The dam itself is large, but for many years it was also known as a lonely, unsettling place after dark. Streetlights have been installed today, but the area can still feel dim at night. In the past, people say it became almost completely black after sunset, and few people went near it.
There is also a local story about the bottom of the reservoir. The lakebed is said to be thick with mud, and some describe it as a kind of bottomless swamp: once something sinks, it never comes back up.
Because of that, rumors say bodies do not float to the surface. According to local talk, when the dam was drained in the past, multiple bodies were discovered. Even today, some anglers reportedly avoid certain spots where the water feels lukewarm and smells of sludge.
Reported incidents at Shijushida Dam
Several suicides connected to Shijushida Dam have been reported in more recent years as well.
On April 28, 2008, the body of a man in his early 20s was found inside a small truck parked in a lot near the dam. A note suggesting suicide had reportedly been attached to the truck window. Based on the condition of the vehicle and the body, it was believed to have been a suicide involving hydrogen sulfide gas.
The 2016 incident involving two high school girls
The tragic incident on November 22, 2016, may still be familiar to some readers in Japan. Shortly before 1:00 a.m., a young male acquaintance of the two girls called emergency services and reported that “two women jumped from Shijushida Dam.”
Firefighters who arrived at the scene found two high school girls, ages 15 and 16, collapsed within the dam grounds. One was later confirmed dead at the hospital. The other survived, but suffered serious injuries.
There was also discussion of whether the case could have involved a crime, but police appeared to view it as an attempted suicide by jumping. At the time, the incident was widely talked about as a possible double suicide involving two high school girls.
Was Shijushida Dam chosen because of its long-standing reputation? Or was there another reason? The answer remains unclear.
Ghost stories around the red bridge
Because Shijushida Dam has been associated with suicides by jumping, many of the ghost stories focus on the so-called red bridge, a place often mentioned in local rumors.
People claim to have seen the ghosts of a family of four, or human hands stretching out where they should not be. But the most common stories involve ghost photographs.
Some say pale blue faces appear floating on the water’s surface. Others claim that countless hands can be seen reaching from the dam toward someone’s back, as if trying to pull them in.
These are only rumors, but they have helped give Shijushida Dam its reputation as one of Iwate’s more disturbing haunted locations.
The student dragged down by an old woman
One particularly eerie story is said to have taken place several decades ago.
During the filming of an independent movie, a student reportedly drowned while shooting a scene in which he jumped into Shijushida Dam. The cause of death was said to be heart failure.
Later, when the film footage was checked, people claimed that a terrifying old woman was clinging to the drowning student. She appeared to be dragging him down into the dam.
According to the story, the film was never released.
Why dams so often become haunted places
By day, Shijushida Dam can look quiet and ordinary, and many people visit the area for walks. At night, however, the mood changes completely.
The scene becomes strangely isolated from human society: dark nature surrounding a huge, cold, artificial structure. For someone carrying heavy thoughts, a place like that can feel dangerously hypnotic. It is not hard to understand why stories of people being drawn into the darkness have formed around it.
Dams across Japan often become the subject of ghost stories. Their construction can involve the loss of villages, accidents, and memories of places swallowed by water. In Shijushida Dam’s case, the deep mud has also led to unrelated rumors that people may have been forcibly sunk there by criminal groups.
Some locals imagine that the resentment and sorrow of those who died there may be what lures others toward the water.
Visiting safely
Shijushida Dam is a real public location, not just a ghost story setting. If you visit, go during daylight, stay in permitted public areas, obey signs and barriers, and never approach the water’s edge or restricted structures. Do not visit at night for a scare, and do not trespass.
This is a place tied to real deaths, so it should be treated with caution and respect.
Iwate has many other places connected to ghost stories and dark folklore, including Mikuwake Forest Park, which is said to have been built over an execution ground; the well-known Irei no Mori; and Warasu Kawara and Kuzuregawa, where legends of child murder and famine remain.
When you feel uneasy or weighed down, a night walk can be tempting. But even then, a dam is one place you should never approach carelessly.

岩手県の心霊スポット四十四田ダムは飛び降り自殺もあった自殺の名所。まずは四十四田ダムの場所から。岩手県盛岡市上田松屋敷。東北地方最大の川である北上川の本流に作られた唯一のダムで、かなり大きいのですが……実は昔から、 自殺の名所 として知られていました。今でこそ街灯ができたものの（それでもだいぶ薄暗いのですが）、昔は夜になると本当に 真っ暗 で、 人の近寄らない場所 でした。また四十四田ダムの湖底は泥が深く、 いったん沈んだが最期、二度と上がってこられない底なし沼 だといわれています。
そのため、 死体も浮かんでこない ……。そういった理由から昔から自殺の名所として有名で、昔ダムの水を抜いた際には、 複数の遺体 が発見されたといいます。。今でも釣りに来る人の中には、 水が生暖かく、ヘドロの匂いのする場所 があって避けているとか。四十四田ダムにおける自殺は、近年でもいくつか報道されています。。。2008年4月28日には、四十四田ダム近くの公園駐車場に停めてあった軽トラックから、 20代前半の男性の遺体 が発見されました。

。そういった身投げ自殺や飛び降り自殺の多い四十四田ダムですから、飛び降りに使われやすい 「赤い橋」 でよく心霊現象が起こるといいます。親子4人連れの幽霊 を見かけた、 人の手 が伸びているのを見た、という話が伝わっていますが、とくに多いのが 心霊写真 です。水面に 青白い顔がいくつも浮かんだ 、引きずり込もうとする 無数の手がダムから背に伸びていた などなど、恐ろしい噂が絶えません。。老婆に引きずり込まれた学生：フィルムに残された恐怖の映像。
。数十年前の話です。自主製作映画の撮影中、四十四田ダムに飛び込むシーンで学生がおぼれ、 心臓マヒで死亡 したという痛ましい事故がありました。しかし後日、撮影したフィルムを見ると、おぼれる学生に 恐ろしい形相の老婆 がしがみついていたそうです。まるで、ダムに引きずり込むかのように……。。もちろんその映画は、お蔵入りになったといいます。岩手県の四十四田ダムは、昼間は静かなたたずまいをしており散歩をする人も多いのですが、夜になれば印象は反転します。
人間社会から隔絶された、自然と無機質かつ巨大な人工物が一体となった、何ともいえない景色。。心に悪いものを抱えていると、そういった 異質な世界 に魅せられてしまいがちです。そこから吸い込まれるように暗闇へ身を投げ出す者がいても、不思議ではありません。。。またダムの建造には、 村の死や事故死 がつきものです。ですからダムは全国的に心霊スポットになりやすいのです。とくに四十四田ダムは泥が深いことから、 反社会組織に無理やり沈められた者がいる 、と心霊スポットとは関係のない噂も広まっています。
