If you are interested in the occult, mythology, or religion, you have probably seen the phrase “Cthulhu Mythos” at least once. Or maybe you arrived there after hearing names like “Nyarlathotep” or “the Deep Ones” in anime, manga, or games.
The Cthulhu Mythos appears across anime, movies, tabletop games, video games, and other media, and it continues to fascinate horror fans today. But when you first try to look into it, you may run into a wall of strange foreign-sounding names and wonder where to begin.
For beginners, here is a simple Q&A-style introduction to the Cthulhu Mythos and the questions people often ask about it.

What is the Cthulhu Mythos?
As many people probably suspect, the Cthulhu Mythos is not a real-world mythology.
It is a fictional mythological system created by American writer Howard Phillips Lovecraft and by writers who were connected to him. At first, the gods and monsters of the Mythos appeared only in Lovecraft’s horror stories. Over time, other writers began sharing and expanding those settings, and the same beings started appearing across multiple authors’ works.
One major reason the Mythos became so well known was the tabletop role-playing game Call of Cthulhu, based on Lovecraft’s story of the same name. In a TRPG, players create characters who act as their alter egos, speak in character, and declare their next actions as the story unfolds. Because this game helped fuel the boom, the name “Cthulhu” became strongly associated with the broader fictional mythology.
One of the biggest features of Lovecraft’s work is that much of its horror is rooted in fear of “space” and the vast unknown.
When you read his stories, you can sense that Lovecraft himself had an instinctive fear of the infinite cosmos and the unfathomable deep sea. For that reason, works by Lovecraft and writers influenced by him are often grouped under the genre name “cosmic horror.”
What is Cthulhu?
Cthulhu is a fictional deity who appears in the game mentioned above, in Lovecraft’s The Call of Cthulhu, and in many later stories.
Many deities appear in the Cthulhu Mythos, but because The Call of Cthulhu helped drive the popularity of the setting, Cthulhu is probably the most famous of them today. To put it another way, it is a bit like calling Greek mythology “the Zeus Mythos” or “the Apollo Mythos” after one of its representative gods.
Within the Mythos, Cthulhu is one of the Great Old Ones, beings who once ruled the Earth. He now lies imprisoned in the sunken city of R’lyeh, sleeping beneath the sea. Because of this, he rarely appears directly before humans. However, he may influence human dreams through telepathy, and people often suffer because of the actions of his servant races or fanatical worshippers.
There are several versions of Cthulhu’s appearance, or rather several different settings and interpretations. In general, he is said to have a head like an octopus or squid, wings like a bat, webbed hands, and a body covered in scales or a rubbery, slimy skin.
Most deities in the Cthulhu Mythos are also unimaginably huge. Cthulhu is no exception: he is said to be several hundred meters long.
What are the Great Old Ones?
The Great Old Ones are gods who once ruled Earth, including Cthulhu.
Other Great Old Ones include Hastur, who is said to be Cthulhu’s half-brother and enemy, and Quachil Uttaus, who grants the power to control time to the sorcerer who summons him. Their appearances and powers vary widely.
Almost all Great Old Ones are threats to humanity, and encountering one usually does not end safely. However, many of them have been sealed away by the Elder Gods, who will be discussed below, in places such as the deep sea, remote mountains, or even distant stars.
What are the Outer Gods?
The Outer Gods are on a different level from the Great Old Ones. They are treated as beings that embody the very source of the universe.
They have existed since the beginning of the cosmos, or perhaps even before it. They are truth itself, and they exist far beyond the limits of human understanding. Of course, even the Great Old Ones are already far beyond human comprehension.
Famous examples include Yog-Sothoth, said to have brought forth Cthulhu and Hastur, and Azathoth, the true creator of the universe.
If that sounds hard to grasp, it is enough to remember this: the Outer Gods are a separate class of gods even more powerful than the Great Old Ones.
What are the Elder Gods?
The Elder Gods are deities who stand in opposition to the Great Old Ones. In many versions of the Mythos, they tend to side with humanity.
They embody the goodness of the universe.
Long ago, the Elder Gods fought a war against the Great Old Ones and won. As a result, the Great Old Ones were sealed away in places like the deep sea and remote mountains.
Many Elder Gods are also modeled after gods from Greek and Egyptian mythology, which gives another glimpse into Lovecraft’s worldview.
How can you learn more about the Cthulhu Mythos?
The Cthulhu Mythos includes many other kinds of beings as well. There are “servitor races,” who are connected by blood to specific deities and worship them devoutly, and “independent races,” who are separate from both the Elder Gods and the Great Old Ones.
The Mythos began with Lovecraft, then continued to grow as devoted fans and later writers added new settings and interpretations. It is fascinating, but it can also feel difficult for beginners to approach.
Because the Mythos kept expanding after it left Lovecraft’s hands, simply reading his works from the beginning is not always the easiest way to understand it. In fact, many Cthulhu Mythos fans would probably not recommend Lovecraft’s original stories as the very first entry point for a newcomer.
So, for anyone who wants to know more, here are some recommended first encounters with cosmic horror. One of the best things about the Cthulhu Mythos is that you can enjoy many of its works as independent stories, even if you have not read Lovecraft’s original texts.

Call of Cthulhu tabletop RPG
Often abbreviated as CoC, this tabletop role-playing game helped ignite the modern boom in Cthulhu Mythos works. The game book contains the rules and information needed to play.
Terms that often come up in Cthulhu Mythos conversations, such as “SAN check” and “Idea roll,” come from this game. In a sense, it is the Bible of the modern Cthulhu Mythos, though “grimoire” may be the more fitting word.
If you buy one rulebook and find a suitable Keeper, the person who runs the game and is usually an experienced player, even beginners can have a lot of fun playing CoC. The book is thick and expensive, but the game is currently one of the most famous TRPGs, with many players. Most players are kind to beginners, so it is worth taking the plunge.
There are also “replay” books for TRPGs, which collect the conversations of people actually playing the game. If playing with other people right away feels intimidating, reading one of these first can help you get a feel for the atmosphere.
Call of Cthulhu video game
If playing face-to-face with other people still feels scary, the Call of Cthulhu video game is also recommended.
It is a first-person adventure game where you use various skills to solve mysteries. With its grand visuals, music, and dark character designs, it lets you experience the Cthulhu Mythos visually.
However, it has a CERO Z rating in Japan, meaning it is intended for players 18 and older. People who are under 18 or uncomfortable with graphic content should be careful.

Nyaruko: Crawling with Love!
This anime helped make the Cthulhu Mythos even more widely known in Japan.
It turns Nyarlathotep, one of the Great Old Ones, into a beautiful girl and places her in the heroine role. It also includes many homages and parodies of other anime and manga, so anime fans will find plenty of scenes that make them grin.
The Cthulhu Mythos may look complicated and difficult to enter at first, but because it is not controlled by a single writer and is instead a shared worldview, it has opened the door to many different forms of media.
Even the same deity may be interpreted differently depending on the writer. In other words, there is no single clear answer that can be called the only correct version. That makes it easier for beginners to step in without feeling afraid.

オカルトや神話・宗教に興味がある人ならば、一度は「 クトゥルフ神話 」という単語を目にしたことがあるだろう。あるいはアニメや漫画、ゲームなどで「 ニャルラトホテプ 」とか「 深き者ども 」なんて言葉を聞いてクトゥルフ神話に辿り着いた人もいるかもしれない。クトゥルフ神話はアニメや映画など様々なメディアに登場し、こんにちでも多くの人々を魅了し続けている。しかし、いざ興味を持って調べてみようと思っても、 妙な語感の横文字が並ぶばかりでよくわからない ……。
そんな初心者のために、今回は「 クトゥルフ神話 」について、よく聞く疑問とそれに対する回答をQ＆A形式で紹介していきたい。公開日：2019年10月27日 更新日：2020年2月26日 。「クトゥルフ神話」って何？。。薄々察しがついている人が大半だと思うが、 クトゥルフ神話は実在する神話ではない 。ハワード・フィリップス・ラヴクラフトというアメリカ人作家と、彼と交流のあった作家たちによって作られた架空の神話体系である。元々はラヴクラフトのホラー作品の中に登場するだけだった架空の神々や怪物たちが、その設定を他の作家たちにも共有され、複数の作家たちの作品に共通して登場するようになるにつれて肉付けされていったものだ。
。この独自の世界観と、ラヴクラフトの同名の小説をもとに作られた『クトゥルフの呼び声』というTRPG（それぞれが自分の分身となるキャラクターを作り、そのキャラクターになりきって会話をしたり、次の行動を宣言したりすることで進めていくアナログゲーム）がブームの火付け役になったため、 現在ではこのゲームの名称を取って、「 クトゥルフ神話 」と呼ばれている。。ラヴクラフトの作品群の最たる特徴は、その多くが「 宇宙 」に対する恐怖に根ざしているという点だ。
。彼の作品を読み解いていくと、 ラヴクラフトという作家自身が無限に広がる宇宙や底の見えない深海に本能的な恐怖心を抱いていた ことがわかってくる。そのため、彼や彼に影響を受けた作家たちの作品は、しばしば「 コズミック・ホラー（宇宙的ホラー） 」というジャンルで一括りにして呼称されることがある。「クトゥルフ」って何？。。「 クトゥルフ（Cthuluhu） 」は、上述したゲーム及びラヴクラフト著の『クトゥルフの呼び声』及びその後の様々な小説に登場する架空の神格である。
クトゥルフ神話には多数の神格が登場するが、同タイトルがブームを牽引したこともあり、現在は最もメジャーな神格になっていると言えるだろう。たとえて言うのなら、ギリシャ神話について、その代表的な神の名を持ってきて「 ゼウス神話 」とか「 アポロン神話 」と呼ぶようなものだろうか。。クトゥルフはかつて地上を支配していた旧支配者の一柱であり、今は海底に沈んだ都市「ルルイエ」に幽閉されて長い眠りについている。そのため人間の前に直接姿を現すことはほとんどないが、テレパシーを使って人間の夢に介入して影響を与えることがあるほか、クトゥルフの奉仕種族や熱心な信奉者たちの活動によって人間が被害を受けることが多い。
その姿については諸説（というよりも諸設定か）あり、一般的にはタコかイカのような頭とコウモリのような翼を持ち、手には水かきがあり、そして表皮は鱗、もしくはゴム状のぬるぬるとした肌に覆われているとされる。また、 クトゥルフ神話に登場する神格の大抵はとてつもなく巨大 である。クトゥルフもその例に漏れず、全長は数百メートルほどに及ぶという。。「旧支配者」って何？。。クトゥルフを始めとした、かつて地球を支配していた神々のことを「旧支配者」と呼ぶ。
旧支配者には他にも、クトゥルフの異母兄弟で敵対関係にあるとされる「ハスター」や、召喚した魔術師に時間を操る力を与える「クァチル・ウタウス」など、姿から能力まで多岐に渡る神格が存在する。ほぼ全ての旧支配者は人類にとって脅威であり、出会えばまず無事では済まないのだが、後述する「旧神」によって、大抵が深海や山奥、はたまたどこかの星に封じられている。「外なる神」って何？。。旧支配者とは別格の、宇宙の根源そのものとされる神々である。彼らは宇宙がはじまった頃、あるいはそれよりも更に昔から存在しており、真理そのものであり、我々人類の理解の及ぶ範疇を遥かに超えた存在である（ 尤も、旧支配者からして我々人類には到底理解の及ばない存在なのだが ）。
代表的な神々として、クトゥルフやハスターを産み落としたとされる「ヨグ＝ソトース」や、宇宙の真の造物主である「アザトース」などが挙げられる。よくわからん、という方は、とりあえず「 旧支配者より更に強い別格の神 」と覚えておけばよいだろう。「旧神」って何？。。旧支配者たちとは対立関係にある神々である。通常、我々人間の味方になってくれることが多い。。宇宙の善性を体現する存在である。。彼ら旧神はかつて旧支配者との間に起こった戦争に勝利し、その末に旧支配者たちは深海や山奥に封じられた。
また、旧神の多くはギリシャ神話やエジプト神話で語られている神々をモデルにしており、ここにもラヴクラフトの世界観を垣間見ることができる。クトゥルフ神話についてもっと知るには？。。> ( )。クトゥルフ神話には他にも、特定の神格と血縁関係にあり、彼らを厚く信奉している「奉仕種族」や、旧神からも旧支配者からも独立している「独立種族」など、様々な存在が登場する。ラヴクラフトから始まり、彼の根強い支持者たちによって設定を付け加えられ己の世界観を豊かにし続けてきた「 クトゥルフ神話 」は、魅力的ではあるが、初心者には多少取っつき難い部分があるのも確かだ。
。また、ラヴクラフト本人の手を離れてからも拡張され続けてきたこともあり、彼の作品群を1から順に読んでいっただけでは、「 クトゥルフ神話 」について理解するのは難しい……というか、大抵の「クトゥルフ神話」好きは、クトゥルフの世界への入門書としてラヴクラフトの著作を勧めることはまずないだろう。そこで、最後に「 もっとクトゥルフ神話について知りたい！」というあなたにおすすめの、「 最初に触れるべきコズミックホラー 」を紹介したい。クトゥルフ神話のよいところは、ラヴクラフトの原典を読んでいなくても、それぞれが充分独立した作品として楽しめることだ。
気になったものがあれば是非手にとって、あなたのコズミックホラーライフを充実させてほしい。。クトゥルフの呼び声。通称「CoC」と呼ばれる、クトゥルフ神話作品ブームの火付け役となったTRPGのゲームブック（ゲームをするのに必要なルール等が記載されている本）。クトゥルフ神話関係の会話に頻繁に登場する「 SAN値チェック 」とか「 アイデアロール 」とかいう単語はこのゲームから生まれた。いわば、現代におけるクトゥルフ神話の聖書（魔導書と言ったほうがニュアンスは正しいかもしれないが）的存在であると言えるだろう。
これを一冊購入して、あとは適当なキーパー（ゲームの進行係。大抵は熟練のプレイヤーが行う）を見つければ、 初心者でも充分楽しくCoCをプレイすることができる 。分厚い上に値段も高いが、現在TRPGというジャンルの中では最もメジャーなゲームということもあり、プレイヤーも多い。大抵皆初心者には優しいので、思い切ってプレイしてみてほしい。。また、TRPGにはリプレイと呼ばれる「実際にゲームをやってみた人たちの会話の記録」をまとめた書籍も存在するので、いきなり対人でゲームをするのはちょっと……という人は、まずこちらを読んで雰囲気を掴むのも手だろう。
コール・オブ・クトゥルフ。それでも対人はやっぱり怖い、という人にはこちらもおすすめ。様々なスキルを駆使して謎を解いていく一人称視点のアドベンチャーゲームで、荘厳なグラフィックや音楽、ダークなキャラクターデザイン等も相まって、クトゥルフ神話の世界観を視覚的に楽しむことができる。ただしCEROレーティングZなので、18歳未満及びグロテスクな表現が苦手な人は注意してほしい。クトゥルフ様がめっちゃ雑に教えてくれるクトゥルフ神話用語辞典。ゆるキャラのような独特のタッチでクトゥルフ神話に登場するキャラクターたちを描いた解説書。
クトゥルフ神話の解説書は数多く存在するが、タイトルの通り「めっちゃ雑」に教えてくれるので、初めてでも理解しやすい。また登場するキャラクターがどれも可愛らしく親しみが持てるので、あなたの「推し神」を探すのにも一役買ってくれることだろう。這い寄れ！ニャル子さん。日本においてクトゥルフ神話の知名度を更にアップさせるのに貢献したアニメ作品。旧支配者の一柱である ニャルラトホテップを美少女化してヒロインに据えている ほか、他にも様々なアニメ・漫画のオマージュやパロディが出てくるので、アニメ好きならにやっとできるシーンが盛りだくさんだ。
一見複雑そうで敷居が高く見えるクトゥルフ神話だが、1人の作家が独占しているのではなく、あくまで「 共有された世界観 」であるというその特性ゆえに、現在では様々なメディアに門戸が開かれている。また、同じ神格であっても作家ごとに解釈が異なることもままあり、いわば「これが正解」とはっきり呼べるものもない状態なので、初心者であろうと臆さずに入っていくことができるだろう。もしもあなたに気になる作品があれば、恐れずに是非クトゥルフ神話の世界に飛び込んでみてほしい。
