There are many famous battles in world history. In most of them, the opponents are clear: Oda versus Takeda at Nagashino, Ishida Mitsunari versus Tokugawa Ieyasu at Sekigahara, and so on.
But the so-called Battle of Los Angeles is different.
Although it involved the U.S. military, the strange part is that no one can say with certainty what the military was actually fighting.
What Was the Battle of Los Angeles?
The incident took place on February 25, 1942, during the Pacific War.
At 1:44 a.m., U.S. Army radar in Los Angeles detected more than 20 aircraft over the Pacific Ocean, about 120 miles west of the city.
Just two days earlier, on February 23, Japanese forces had shelled the oil facilities near Santa Barbara. Because of that recent attack, the U.S. military identified the 25 radar targets as possible Japanese carrier-based attack planes or bombers. Army units along the West Coast were ordered to prepare for interception.
1,430 Rounds of Anti-Aircraft Fire
About an hour later, around 3:00 a.m., both military personnel and civilians reported seeing fast-moving objects over Santa Monica. The objects were said to be flying at roughly 200 miles per hour.
In response, the 37th Coast Artillery Brigade opened fire with anti-aircraft guns.
Searchlights swept across the sky, trying to lock onto the targets. In total, the Army fired 1,430 rounds of anti-aircraft ammunition. Yet not a single aircraft was shot down.
Fighter planes, including Curtiss P-40s, were also reportedly used in an attempt to intercept the objects. Even so, the military achieved no confirmed results.
A Sudden Disappearance
The mysterious aircraft—or whatever they were—were not brought down by the U.S. military’s barrage.
In a major city like Los Angeles, the sound and sight of large-scale anti-aircraft fire, combined with reports of a possible Japanese air raid, threw residents into confusion.
And yet, according to accounts of the event, the objects continued flying calmly over the beaches along the Pacific coast. For about 20 minutes, soldiers and civilians watched them in the sky.
Then, all of the targets suddenly disappeared.
The situation quieted down as if nothing had happened.
Only one question remained: what had they been fighting?
The Japanese Aircraft Theory
At first, the incident was treated as a Japanese air raid.
However, it later became clear that there were no large Japanese vessels off the West Coast capable of launching such a large number of carrier-based planes over Los Angeles that night. It is also considered unrealistic that fighter aircraft could have crossed the Pacific on their own.
The Balloon Bomb Theory
Another theory claimed that the targets were Japanese balloon bombs—balloon-shaped weapons carried by the wind.
But this explanation also has problems.
The objects were reportedly moving at high speed, and they were seen not only on radar and by military personnel, but also by civilians. Balloon bombs do not fly at high speed, nor would they be able to avoid 1,430 rounds of anti-aircraft fire in any deliberate way.
On top of that, at the time of the incident, those balloon bombs had not yet been put into practical use.
The UFO Theory
Because of all this, the Battle of Los Angeles remains an incident whose cause is still treated by many as uncertain.
Fast-moving objects. No aircraft shot down despite massive anti-aircraft fire. Targets that seemed to vanish suddenly.
For these reasons, many people have linked the incident to UFO theories. Of course, that remains speculation. The truth is still unclear.
What does seem certain is that something highly unusual happened over Los Angeles—something even the U.S. military could not clearly identify at the time.
The First Interplanetary Battle?
The Battle of Los Angeles is remembered as a mysterious event in which the military fired on unidentified flying objects.
If, someday, it were ever proven to have been an encounter with UFOs, it might be remembered as the first recorded battle between Earth and something from beyond it.
For now, however, it remains one of the strangest wartime mysteries in American history.

ロサンゼルスの戦いの概略。。ではロサンゼルスの戦いとは何だったのか、その概要を見ていきましょう。。1942年2月25日それは起こった。。太平洋戦争中の1942年2月25日。。午前1時44分にロサンゼルス市にあるアメリカ陸軍のレーダーが、西120マイルの太平洋上に20機を超える航空機の姿をとらえたのです。くしくも2日前の2月23日に 日本軍によってサンタバーバラ石油基地に対する砲撃 が行われたばかり。このことから アメリカ軍はこの25機の機影を日本軍の艦載攻撃機もしくは爆撃機と認定、西海岸の陸軍に対しスクランブルを発令し、その迎撃に備えた のです。
対空砲火1430発の一斉攻撃。。それから約1時間後の午前3時。。サンタモニカ上空において、米軍だけでなく民間人においても約時速320キロで飛行する高速の飛行物体を視認。陸軍第３７沿岸砲兵旅団はこれに対して 対空砲火の一斉攻撃 を始めたのです。しかし、サーチライトで目標を視認しながらの対空砲火でありながら、総数1430発にも及ぶ対空砲火は空振りに終わり一機たりとも撃墜できません。さらにはカーチスP-40などの戦闘機での迎撃を試みたものの、それでもまったくの戦果も上げられなかったのです。
悠々と飛び回った後突然の消失。。米軍の一斉攻撃に一機も落とされることのなかった謎の機影。。大都市ロサンゼルスで行われた 大規模な対空砲火 と、日本軍機による空襲の報告は市民を混乱に陥れます。しかし、そんな中その飛行物体は太平洋岸のビーチ上空を悠々と飛行、約20分間にわたり見守る軍人や市民の前にその姿をさらしたのです。そして、その後、すべての機影が一斉に消失。何事も無かったこのように、事態は沈静化したのです。。彼らはなにと戦ったのか。。そして、そこには謎だけが残りました。
日本軍機説。。最初、これは日本軍機による空襲とされていました。しかしながら、この日、これほど大量の艦載機をロサンゼルス上空に送れるような大型艦船は西海岸には存在しなかったことがすでに分かっています。また、当然単独飛行で戦闘機が太平洋を越えることも考えられません。。風船爆弾説。。また、この攻撃は日本軍による風船爆弾（ 風に乗って飛んでくる気球型爆弾 ）という説も流布されました。しかし、これに関して言えば、高速で飛行する飛行物体の姿をレーダーや軍人のみならず民間人でさえ目撃しているのです。
とうぜん風船爆弾は高速移動しませんし、アメリカ軍の1430発の対空砲火を避けるはずもありません。しかも、この時風船爆弾は実用化されていなかったのです。。UFO説。。つまり、この件に関しては、いまだに アメリカ軍としても原因不明の事態 となっています。しかし、高速の飛行物体、対空砲火1430発でも落とせない機体、そして突然消えてしまったその事実から考えると、これはUFOの仕業であると考える人は大勢います。もちろんすべては闇のなかです。。ただ、まさに米軍ですら把握できないようななんかとんでもない事態が起こっていたことだけは間違いありません。
初の異星間交戦なのかもしれない。。正体不明の飛行物体と戦った、謎だらけのロサンゼルスの戦い。。しかし、もしこれがUFOとの交戦であったなら、これは間違いなく世界初の異星間交戦の記録。世界の戦争史に新しい金字塔として刻まれる日が、来るかもしれません
