When you hear the phrase “underground people,” it has a strange kind of romance to it. It sounds like something out of old tokusatsu hero shows—Ultraman and the like—where mysterious races appear from beneath the earth.
As most of us know, below the surface of the Earth is the crust. Beneath that is the mantle, where magma exists, and far deeper still is the core. In a place like that, full of unimaginable heat, there should be no room for a civilization of underground people… at least, if we think about it normally.
The Hollow Earth Theory goes back to the 17th century
The idea is older than many people expect. In 1692, the English astronomer Edmond Halley—the man associated with Halley’s Comet—proposed a version of what is now called the Hollow Earth Theory.
According to Halley’s theory, the inside of the Earth was bright, and there were regions that could be inhabited. He even suggested that luminous gas inside the planet created auroras and made the inner world shine like the sun.
To people at the time, it must have sounded unbelievable. But Halley was not the only respected thinker to take the idea seriously.
Around 1770, Leonhard Euler, the mathematical genius famous for Euler’s formula, also began to support a version of the Hollow Earth Theory. After that, other scholars and thinkers made similar claims: that the Earth contained hollow spaces, that livable regions existed inside, and that a civilization older than anything on the surface might be hidden there.
The legend of travelers who passed from the Arctic to the south
Around the same period, a story spread about a fisherman from Norway.
According to the tale, a father and child were fishing far north of Britain when they were caught in a sudden violent storm and thick fog. Fearing they were lost, they sailed desperately through the darkness. Eventually, they reached land—and there they encountered giants said to be about three meters tall.
The giants were not alone, but lived as a group. Somehow, communication was possible. When the fishermen explained that they had nearly been shipwrecked, the giants gave them food and water and allowed them to rest. The place was filled with buildings the fishermen had never seen before, and they reportedly stayed there for several days.
When they said they needed to return home, the giants gave them directions. The fishermen set sail as instructed, passed once again through dense fog and storm, and emerged into open horizon.
When they finally landed, they discovered that they had arrived in Argentina.
In other words, the story claimed that they had been lost in the Arctic Ocean, entered the land of giants, and somehow emerged near the far south. This legend helped strengthen the Hollow Earth idea: that there were entrances at the North and South Poles, and that a kingdom of giants existed underground.
Hitler, Antarctica, and the search for Shambhala
By the time World War II was approaching, another strange rumor entered the story.
Adolf Hitler, leader of Nazi Germany, is said to have believed that the underground world was connected to the legendary realm of Agartha, or Shambhala. According to occult accounts, Nazi Germany sent expedition teams to Antarctica several times in search of clues.
As the war turned against Germany, these expeditions reportedly had to stop. But Antarctica was not the only place said to have been investigated. Tibet and the Arctic Ocean were also rumored to have been searched as possible gateways to Shambhala.
The film Seven Years in Tibet, starring Brad Pitt, is set against a related historical background, depicting the connection between Heinrich Harrer and the young Dalai Lama.
For Nazi Germany, which is often linked in occult writing to the secretive Thule Society, the legendary Shambhala may have seemed like an irresistible prize.
So do underground people exist?
At this point, the only honest answer is: we do not know.
That may sound disappointing, but after hundreds of years of speculation and expeditions inspired by the Hollow Earth Theory, no solid proof has been found.
Still, the mystery has not disappeared. Some modern reports claim that deep beneath the crust, the mantle contains vast regions where conditions are not as simple as a world of uniform molten magma. Other accounts suggest that certain areas may be cooler than expected and incredibly large.
During the Soviet era and into modern Russia, drilling projects were carried out to study the deep Earth. The most famous is the Kola Superdeep Borehole. According to accounts often cited in occult discussions, drilling reached about 12 kilometers underground before geothermal heat exceeded 300 degrees Celsius, melting the drill tip and forcing the project to stop.
Even reaching 12 kilometers is an astonishing achievement. But it seems that human technology still cannot easily overcome the forces of nature.
Antarctica remains one of the great mystery zones in these stories. It is a special environment governed by international agreements, covered in thick ice, and studied by researchers from many countries. Rumors continue to circulate: UFOs flying out of giant holes, or the discovery of a “green wilderness” beneath the ice during America’s Operation Highjump.
If the full picture of Antarctica is ever understood, perhaps stories of an “entrance to the underground world” will finally be explained—one way or another.
For now, we can only wait for legitimate explorers and researchers to uncover more. Antarctica is an extremely dangerous and highly regulated place, so travelers should never attempt independent expeditions or enter restricted areas.
A famous underground-world account
One book often mentioned in connection with this legend describes a father and son whose fishing boat was caught in a violent Arctic storm. After barely surviving, they supposedly reached another-dimensional Hollow Earth world.
At the center of that inner world was said to be a sun covered in a white electric cloud—the “Smoky God.” The account describes a real Garden of Eden, a race of long-lived giants speaking a language similar to Sanskrit, enormous plants and animals, transportation powered by electricity, mysterious communication technology, and golden buildings.
According to the story, the travelers spent two years in that underground world before returning to the surface.
Whether read as testimony, fantasy, or occult folklore, it remains one of the most striking legends in the long history of the Hollow Earth mystery.

。。画像引用元： Google画像検索 。凄い話ですよね。17世紀後半、正確には1692年にイギリスの天文学者であるエドモンド・ハレーは 「地球空洞説」 を唱えました。。この地球空洞説の中で「ハレー彗星」の名付け親であるエドモンド・ハレーは「 地球内部は明るくて、そして居住可能な地域が存在している 」と驚きの内容。更に「発光性のガスによってオーロラがめぐり太陽のように明るい」と説いたんです。。。当時の人からしたら「 なぁ～に言ってんだこのひとは 」て感じで生暖かい目で見ていたんでしょうが、。
エドモンド・ハレーに続き1770年頃、数学の天才で「オイラーの公式」で有名なレオンハルト・オイラーまでもが地球空洞説に同調し始めました。それから続々と各種名学者たちが 「地球の中は空洞で住める場所が存在する」「その中は地表よりもはるか昔より文明が存在している」 と言い始めたのです。北極から南極に「抜けてしまった」人の伝承。。ちょうどその頃、北欧ノルウェーの漁師が漁に出ている最中に大しけに迷い込み、気がついたら巨人の国に迷い込んだ、という話が出てきました。
その漁師は親子でブリテン島よりも遥か北部で漁を行っていたのですが、突如出現した霧（大しけ）に出会い、遭難を危惧して無我夢中で航海を実施した所、暗闇を抜けたあとに陸地にたどり着き、そして 身長が３ｍほどもある巨人たちに出会った というのです。。巨人は1人ではなく集団で、なんとか言葉が通じた為、遭難しかかっていた旨を伝えると食料や水を与えてもらえ、休養を取らせてくれたとのこと。とても親切で、見たこともない建物が並ぶ中、数日間寝食を共にしたそうです。
故郷に戻らないと行けないと伝えると、道しるべを教えてもらい、そのとおりに船を出していきました。船は再び濃い霧の大しけに覆われ、暗闇を抜けるとそこには地平線が見え、船を着岸させると、なんと彼らはアルゼンチンに到着していたのです。。。北欧ノルウェー北部といえば北極海。。北極海で迷って巨人の国に入ったら、なんと南極から出てきてしまったわけです。この話が 地球空洞説に拍車をかけ、北極と南極に出入り口があり、地下には巨人の国が存在する、という伝説が完成 しました。

。ブラッド・ピット主演の「セブン・イヤーズ・イン・チベット」もその背景を舞台にした映画ですね。。。▼若き日のダライ・ラマとハインリヒ・ハラーの交流を描いた名作▼。オカルト秘密結社である「トゥーレ協会」がバックグラウンドにいたナチスドイツからすると、伝説のシャンバラは喉から手が出るほど欲するものだったのでしょう。。結局地底人は居るの？居ないの？。。結論としては現在の段階では「わからない」です。。そりゃそうですよね。過去500年にもわたって様々な人々が地球空洞説をもとに探検を行って、今の段階では確たる証拠が出ていないわけですから。
「 わからない 」としか言いようがありません。。しかし、近年の調査によると地殻の下に存在するマントルにはマグマが滞留している地区が多数存在することがわかっており。その場所については温度も低く、かなり広大な面積が存在しているといわれています。。旧ソ連から現ロシアにかけて、地下マントルを調査するための掘削作業が行われていましたが、それも地下12キロメートルの段階で温度が300度を超える地熱でドリルの先端が溶け、掘削作業を断念したという記録もあります。
