Shirataka Okami is a name many people in Nara have heard at least once. Today it is known as one of the prefecture’s most notorious haunted spots, but until the early postwar era it was also a sacred place where people with serious worries came to pray.
Hidden deep in the mountains, the abandoned shrine has gathered countless frightening stories over the years. Some say a teenage girl was possessed by an evil spirit and suffered a mental breakdown. Others claim to have seen a terrifying ghost near the remains of an air-raid shelter. There are also rumors of visitors suffering serious injuries after going there.
To many locals, Shirataka Okami is remembered as a place that should not be treated lightly. Yet this ruined shrine is said to have roots connected to Kyoto’s famous Fushimi Inari Taisha, and behind its history is the life of a medium named Nakai Shigeno.
This article introduces Shirataka Okami as both a haunted site and, to some believers, a power spot, while looking back at its history and the woman at the center of its rise.
An abandoned shrine in the mountains
Shirataka Okami is said to have become an abandoned shrine in 1991, which is more recent than many people might expect.
The site is quiet, but its atmosphere is unsettling in a way that goes beyond ordinary ruins. There is a waterfall basin once used for ascetic training, small shrines that still suggest traces of prayer, an air-raid shelter tied to a raw wartime past, decaying torii gates, and fox statues whose heads have fallen away. Even people who do not believe they are spiritually sensitive may feel that something lingers there.
One of the best-known stories tells of a 16-year-old girl who went there out of curiosity, entered a cave, and was allegedly possessed by an evil spirit. According to the rumor, she came to look like an old woman and suffered severe mental disturbance. As with many local ghost stories, the details are difficult to verify, but the tale has helped shape Shirataka Okami’s reputation.
The site became known nationwide after famous ghost storyteller Junji Inagawa introduced it as “the abandoned shrine in Nara.” Video related to that story has reportedly been available through streaming services such as Amazon.
Haunted spot or sacred power spot?
Although Shirataka Okami is often described as dangerous, some people insist that it is not simply a haunted place. To them, it is a sacred site or a power spot.
There is a reason for that. Before it fell into ruin in the early Heisei period, many people traveled to this remote mountain shrine from around Kansai and beyond, seeking help with illness, anxiety, and difficult life decisions.
Shirataka Okami was originally a legitimate religious site said to have received recognition from Fushimi Inari Taisha, the head shrine of Inari worship in Kyoto. In 1939, it became a special religious association connected to Fushimi Inari Taisha, and in 1964 it was officially promoted to the Osaka South Branch.
Fushimi Inari Taisha is famous for its fox messengers and its long lines of vermilion torii gates, one of the most iconic “Japanese” landscapes for many travelers. Shirataka Okami’s rise would not have happened without the medium Nakai Shigeno, who served as its central spiritual figure and became widely known in the early Showa era.
Who was Nakai Shigeno?
Nakai Shigeno was born into a family of prayer specialists or shamans. More than simply a “psychic,” she was a miko-like religious figure whose life was shaped by prayer, training, and spiritual practice.
Her abilities are said to have appeared when she was still young. As she continued her training, she also lived an ordinary woman’s life: she married, had children, and balanced housework and parenting with spiritual discipline.
Then an accident reportedly caused her to lose sight in both eyes.
According to the tradition surrounding her, Shigeno did not give in to despair. She trained day after day at a waterfall basin associated with Kannon, where legend says a blind emperor once regained his sight. During this period, she reportedly saw the image of a white fox appear in the darkness of her blindness. Soon after, the story says, her vision returned.
She was also said to have received a mantra, or sacred words, from the fox deity. From that point on, her status as a shamanic religious figure was believed to have risen dramatically, and her spiritual power was said to grow stronger.
The Osaka origins of Shirataka Okami
One night, Nakai Shigeno dreamed of the fox deity and received a message: she was told to go to Yasui Tenjin in Osaka and to the Tamahime Shrine within its grounds.
Shigeno was not wealthy, but the next day she took what little money she had and went to Yasui Tenjin. She had not known the shrine beforehand, yet inside the grounds she found a small shrine marked as Tamahime Shrine.
When she explained her dream and her story to the priest of Yasui Tenjin, she was eventually entrusted with Tamahime Shrine.
Shigeno moved from Nara to Osaka and continued her training there. It is said that people who came to Yasui Tenjin for advice received strikingly accurate guidance from her, including information no ordinary person should have known.
As a result, her followers increased day by day. Eventually, even politicians were said to have visited her repeatedly to ask about their futures and important decisions.
Her achievements were recognized, and through the support of Yasui Tenjin she was introduced to Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto. After the story of the white fox and her religious work were presented, she and Tamahime Shrine were selected as a special association under Fushimi Inari Taisha.
With that recognition, Nakai Shigeno and Tamahime Shrine returned to her home area of Nara.
Return to Nara and the birth of Shirataka Okami
After returning to Nara, Shigeno built a training place for waterfall asceticism. This site came to be known as Shirataka Okami.
The waterfall still remains, and the sound of falling water echoes through the quiet abandoned grounds. With Fushimi Inari Taisha’s recognition behind her, Shigeno’s fame spread even farther. She came to be revered as a medium who could hear the words of the gods.
As the number of followers grew, Tamahime Shrine expanded as well. Eventually it became independent as a religious corporation and changed its name to Tamahime Church.
From sacred site to haunted ruins
In its active years, many followers visited Shirataka Okami seeking the power of the fox deity through Nakai Shigeno. People suffering from mysterious illnesses, or those lost about the direction of their lives, came to her for divine guidance.
Her following continued to grow, but even Nakai Shigeno, believed by her followers to be protected by the gods, could not escape age. Over time, her decline became visible.
At one point, the group’s reputation and growing number of believers led to its promotion as the Osaka South Branch of Fushimi Inari Taisha. But in 1991, Nakai Shigeno died at the age of 89.
After her death, her followers lost their central figure, and the shrine gradually fell into ruin. Although it was a religious corporation, its practices appear to have depended heavily on Shigeno’s personal ability, with little in the way of manuals or clear transmission to disciples. That same year, Shirataka Okami became an abandoned shrine.

A power spot with a frightening reputation
Shirataka Okami was opened as a training ground, but its roots are tied to the Inari faith and to Fushimi Inari Taisha. For believers, it was a place connected to the fox deity.
That is why some people still describe the abandoned shrine as a power spot rather than simply a haunted location. During the day, some visitors have reported feeling a solemn, sacred atmosphere there.
At the same time, the site has a strong reputation as a dangerous haunted place, especially in stories about nighttime visits. In occult belief, sacred places that hold spiritual power may also attract wandering or malevolent spirits. For that reason, shrines and temples can take on a very different image after dark in local ghost lore.
The story of the possessed girl is sometimes interpreted as a case of kitsune-tsuki, or fox possession. In Japanese folklore, fox spirits can possess a person, causing confusion, erratic behavior, and the collapse of an ordinary life.
Whether Shirataka Okami is viewed as a sacred site, a power spot, or one of Nara’s scariest haunted places, it is not a location to approach as a joke. It is an abandoned religious site with unstable ruins and a complicated local reputation. Do not enter restricted areas, trespass on private land, explore unsafe structures, or visit at night. If you are researching the story, treat the place and the surrounding community with respect.

白高大神（しらたかおおかみ） ……。奈良県に住んでいる人は、一度はその名を聞いたことがあるでしょう。奈良県屈指の 心霊スポット でありながら、戦後初期までは多くの悩める人が通いつめた 聖地 です。。山奥にひっそりとそびえ立つ廃神社「白高大神」では、数多くの恐い話が語られています。「少女が 悪霊に取り憑かれて 精神を 崩壊させた」 。「防空壕跡地で恐ろしい 幽霊 を見た」 。「訪れた後に 大怪我 をした人がたくさんいる」 。取り上げれば数え切れないほどの、ホラーストーリーの数々。
地元民には 「本当に危険な場所」 として認知されています。そんな恐ろしい廃神社、実はあの京都伏見稲荷大社にルーツをもつ人気の神社で、その裏には「中井シゲノ」という1人の巫女の人生が隠されていました。今回は奈良県屈指の心霊スポットであり、パワースポットともされる廃神社「白高大神」について紹介し、過去の歴史や中井シゲノなる人物についてお話します。廃神社「白高大神」は悪霊に取り憑かれる危険な心霊スポット。まずは白高大神の場所から紹介します。。
白高大神が廃神社になったのは、 平成3年 からです。思ったよりつい最近の話なんですね。。山奥にそびえたつ廃神社は、静かでありながら不気味です。単なる廃墟としての不気味さではありません。修行に使われた滝つぼや、祈祷のあとが残る祠、生々しい歴史を語る防空壕、そして朽ちた鳥居と首の落ちたキツネの像……。霊感のない人でもなにかを感じずにはいられない、まさに奈良県屈指の心霊スポットです。。面白半分で近づいた16歳の少女が洞窟内で 悪霊に取り憑かれ 、老婆のような姿になって精神に異常をきたしたという話はあまりにも有名。
。怪談師として有名な 稲川淳二 が「奈良の廃神社」として紹介したことで、全国的な心霊スポットになりました。その映像はAmazonなどで今でも配信されていますので、興味のある方は。心霊スポット？パワースポット？廃神社の正体にまつわる中井シゲノとは。。そんな危険な心霊スポットとして認識されている白高大神ですが、 「ここは聖地だ」「心霊スポットではなくパワースポットだ」 という人もいます。。というのも、実は平成初期に廃神社になるまでは、 この山奥にそびえ立つ神社に、関西内外から多くの悩める人が通いつめていたからです。
。白高大神はそもそも、あのおキツネ様の総本山 「京都伏見稲荷大社」 のお墨付きをもらった、由緒正しき神社でした。。1939年に伏見稲荷大社の特別講社に、そして1964年には正式に大阪南支部に昇格しています。。京都伏見稲荷大社といえば、 おキツネ様 。コンコン。。あの鳥居がずらーーーっと並ぶ The Japanese なロケーションで有名ですね。。その伏見稲荷大社から認められ、白高大神にたくさんの人が集まったのは、当時の宮司（正しくはオダイ）であり、昭和初期にその名を日本中にとどろかせた霊能者 「中井シゲノ」 という人物なくしてはありえませんでした。
中井シゲノは霊能者、というよりも祈祷師（シャーマン）の一家に生まれた巫女です。幼い頃にその才能に目覚めて以降、数々の功績を残し、やがて白高大神を建てるにいたります。。キツネの神さまに洗礼を受けた中井シゲノの人生。。幼い頃から祈祷師としての才能に恵まれた 中井シゲノ は、様々な修行を積みながらその才能をさらに開花させ、また女性としても恵まれた人生を歩みます。成人になる頃には結婚し、子供を出産。子育てや家事をしながら修行に打ちこんでいた矢先、 事故によってなんと両目を失明してしまいます。
。しかし目が見えなくなった彼女はその障害にも立ち向かいました。その昔、盲目の天皇が開眼したという伝説が残る 観音菩薩の滝つぼ で、来る日も来る日も修行を行ったのです。その結果、失明により暗黒に閉ざされていた彼女の目に 白いキツネ の姿が浮かび、なんと両目の 視力を回復 していたのです。。そして、キツネの神様から 真言（仏の言葉） を授かりました。以来、彼女のシャーマンとしての霊格は格段に向上。すさまじいパワーを生みだしていくことになります。
中井シゲノと白高大神のはじまりは大阪。。中井シゲノはある日、キツネの神様を夢に見て1つの お告げ を聞きます。「大阪にある安居天神とその中の玉姫社に行け」 。けっして裕福ではなかった彼女ですが、翌日、なけなしのお金を握りしめて大阪にある 安居天神 へと向かいます。中井シゲノは安居天神のことはなにも知らなかったのですが、境内には本当に 「玉姫社」 と書かれた祠がありました。安居天神の宮司に、夢のお告げとこれまでの経緯を説明したところ、なんと玉姫社を譲り受けることに。
。中居シゲノは奈良県から大阪の玉姫社へと身を移し、この地でさらなる修行に励むことになりました。中居天神に悩み相談に来た人などに対して、誰も知りえないような的確なアドバイスを与えたといいます。。その結果、彼女のもとに集まる 信者 は日に日に増え、なんと 政治家 までもがその行末について相談に足繁く通うようになりました。そういった数々の功績がたたえられ、中居天神のはからいから 京都伏見稲荷大社 へと取り次がれ、洗礼を受けた白いキツネの経緯などを伝えた結果、実績を鑑みて京都伏見稲荷大社から特別な 講社 に選ばれたのです。
。玉姫社と中居シゲノ氏は、伏見稲荷大社からお墨付きをもらい、故郷である奈良へ戻ります。再び奈良へ 白高大神と玉姫教会の誕生。。奈良に戻った中井シゲノは、滝行（滝に打たれる修行）の道場として、 白高大 社 を築きあげます。これがやがて 「白高大神」 と呼ばれるようになるのです。滝は今でも残っており、静かな廃神社に水の落ちる音が響いています。京都伏見稲荷大社のお墨付きをもらった彼女の名声は天高くとどろき 、神の言葉を聞ける巫女様 として崇め奉られるまでにいたります。
玉姫社はその信者規模に応じて大きくなり、ついに1つの宗教法人しとて独立を果たし 「玉姫教会」 とその名を変えます。廃神社となった聖地 そして心霊スポットへ。。中井シゲノを中心としたおキツネ様によるパワーを求めて数々の信者が足繁く通った 白高大神 。原因不明の病に苦しむ人や、人生の行く末に迷った人に対して、中井シゲノは神の力をもって解決の策を伝えていきました。信者数は増加の一途をたどるものの、神の加護を得た中井シゲノもさすがに 年齢 には勝てず、徐々にその 老い を隠せなくなっていきます。
信者数の激増とその評価から、一時は 伏見稲荷大社の大阪南支部 にまで昇格したものの、 1991年、中井シゲノは89歳にてこの世を去りました。。彼女の死を境に信者は行き場をなくし、次第に神社も廃れていきました。宗教法人といっても弟子への伝授やマニュアルがほとんどなく、中井シゲノの天才性に依存していたからです。そして残念なことに平成3年、正式に 廃神社 へと姿を変えてしまいました 。。中井シゲノと白高大神については、アンヌ・ブッシイという宗教民俗学者の著書にもっと詳しく載っています。
思わず現代の信仰や人生について考えてしまうオススメの良書です。奈良県屈指の心霊スポットでもありパワースポットでもある 白高大神 。。白高大神は修行場として開かれていましたが、前述の通り、そのルーツは 京都伏見稲荷大社 の分社にあります。。キツネの神様 が存在していた場所なのです。。廃神社と化した今でもそのパワーは健在で、 昼間 に訪れれば霊験あらたかな空気感を味わうことができるでしょう。聖地 や パワースポット とも呼ばれるのはそのためです。
しかし夜に訪れた場合には、その霊的なパワーを喰らいに様々な悪霊がふきだまる 「危険な心霊スポット」 へと変貌します。。全国の廃神社に漏れず、幽霊には霊的パワーを求めて集まる習性があります。そのため夕方より先の 「魔が差す」 時間帯は、神聖な神社仏閣は一転して危険な場所になってしまうのです。。また昼間に訪れたからといっても、面白半分で探索したり、悪ふざけをすれば、キツネの神様に祟られることもあるでしょう。悪霊に取り憑かれた 少女がいるといいますが、それはいわゆる 「狐憑き」 だったのでしょう。
