Short, funny clips, emotional edits, cute videos—TikTok exploded in popularity by making them easy to shoot and share. But around the app, a much darker rumor has also spread online. This article looks at those rumors cautiously: what people have claimed, why the story gained traction, and why some users found it unsettling.

Why Did TikTok Spread So Fast?
For a while, ads encouraging people to install TikTok seemed to appear constantly on Facebook, Twitter, and other social platforms.
TikTok itself is free to use, so some people wondered: if the app is free, how can it afford such a huge advertising push?
There is an old saying: nothing is scarier than something free. According to the rumor, TikTok users may be paying a price far higher than money—their faces.
That sounds strange at first. How can a face be a price? The rumor goes like this.
Is TikTok Collecting Face Data?
Most people who use TikTok film their own face, or the faces of friends. Since the videos are shot on smartphones, many are recorded at close range. The rumor claims that this close-up filming could be used to collect “face data.”
Face data is already used for next-generation authentication systems, including facial recognition features on smartphones such as the iPhone. So the frightening idea is this: if someone obtained your face data, could they use it to unlock your phone or impersonate you?
At this stage, that is speculation. But it is the kind of speculation that can feel disturbingly plausible.
So why did this story attach itself to TikTok in particular? One reason may be that TikTok was developed by a Chinese company.
China has been building facial-recognition systems using artificial intelligence on a national scale. Reports about the rapid growth of these systems—such as the ability to identify a specific person from among thousands—have made many people uneasy.
Seen through that lens, the rumor imagines a chilling scenario: a free app spreads around the world, gathers massive amounts of facial data, and uses it to train AI for other purposes.
Again, this remains a rumor, but it is undeniably creepy.
What Kind of Damage Do People Imagine?
Discussions about the misuse of face data often bring up several possible risks, including:
- Unlocking smartphones protected by facial recognition
- Greatly improving the ability to identify and arrest criminals
- Improving the ability to identify anti-government activists or political dissidents
- Creating “clone masks” for espionage
- Forging driver’s licenses or passports with highly accurate composite images
It sounds like science fiction, but these are the kinds of future risks people have imagined.
In a country with a one-party political system, the idea of identifying anti-government figures can feel especially ominous. But one of the most frightening possibilities is the so-called clone mask.
A clone mask would essentially be an artificial-skin mask made to resemble a specific person. Add a wig, and in theory, it could become difficult to tell the difference at a glance. The original article cited China Net in relation to this topic.
Artificial skin can already be manufactured, so if AI could create extremely precise production data, the idea becomes theoretically possible. If someone used a copied face for espionage or sabotage, the person whose face was copied could be the one suspected or arrested.
That is the terrifying world this rumor imagines: a world where false accusations become easier to create.
The same fear applies to forged IDs and passports. If highly accurate face data exists, the rumor argues, the rest could simply become a matter of printing and fabrication.
For Now, It Is Still Only a Rumor
All of these stories surrounding TikTok remain in the realm of rumor. At the time of the original article, there had been no confirmed reports of TikTok being misused in this way, and no widely known cases matching these fears.
Even so, the fact that the app’s developer is based in China made some users feel uneasy. Could these science-fiction-like risks become real someday?
Thinking about the idea of a technological singularity in 2045 suddenly feels more frightening. All we can do is hope that these technologies are used in a positive direction.
Postscript: China’s Password Law
On January 1, 2020, China’s Password Law went into effect. Some people in Japan warned that smartphones and apps could be monitored without users realizing it.
According to claims circulating at the time, the law placed passwords used online—including those connected to apps developed in China—under the supervision of the Chinese government. Many people in Japan expressed concern about what that could mean for personal information.
On Twitter, one user, @sonkoubun, claimed that from New Year’s Day 2020, China would bring all passwords under government control, with penalties for those who resisted. The user also claimed this could affect Japanese users of services connected with Chinese platforms.
Another user, @JunSakura_Japan, warned that passwords for Chinese-made apps could be exposed to the Chinese Communist Party, and specifically mentioned TikTok’s rapid spread among Japanese teens through promotion by celebrities and TV programs.
These social media posts were warnings and opinions, not confirmed proof of TikTok misuse. Still, they show how strongly privacy fears were spreading at the time.
To protect important personal information online, users should take security seriously: review app permissions, use strong and unique passwords, and be cautious about what they choose to share.
