Have you ever looked closely into how Japan, as a country and culture, came to be?
Most people in Japan learn about the Jomon and Yayoi periods in school, then the pace of history class quickly speeds forward. As a result, there are surprisingly few chances to study Japan’s ancient history in depth. The same is true for the people known as toraijin—immigrants or settlers from overseas—who had a major influence on what later became Japanese culture.
Ancient Japanese history is full of blank spaces, unresolved questions, and mysteries that still have not been fully explained. When it comes to the scientific roots of the Japanese people, there may be more that remains uncertain than what can be stated with confidence.
Ancient Records and Unanswered Questions
Two of the texts that attempt to organize these uncertain origins are the Kojiki and the Nihon Shoki, Japan’s oldest historical chronicles. However, the Kojiki is generally said to have been completed sometime after around the year 700.
That is surprisingly late for a text treated as one of Japan’s foundational historical records. There is also a story behind its compilation: when Prince Naka no Oe, later Emperor Tenji, assassinated Soga no Iruka of the powerful Soga clan, the conflict and resulting fires are said to have destroyed a number of historical documents.
After that, the scattered records and traditions had to be gathered and unified. This process is associated with Emperor Tenmu and Empress Genmei, and it took a long time to bring the material together.
In other words, the history compiled in the Kojiki does not necessarily give us a perfectly accurate picture of ancient Japan. The Kojiki was also largely created for a domestic audience, and much of its narrative centers on a creation myth in which various gods descend to the earth.
When people talk about Japanese history, popular periods like the Sengoku era or the Meiji Restoration tend to get the spotlight. Compared with ancient times, those periods are much more recent, and more documents and historical materials survive. Their mix of documented events and colorful anecdotes also makes them easy to adapt into TV dramas and popular media.
But behind those well-known eras, there may have been mysterious figures and cultures that are hard for modern Japanese people to imagine. If traces of those ancient cultures have been passed down again and again, surviving in altered form into the present day, then Japan’s ancient past is filled with both mystery and romance.
The Toraijin and the Hata Clan
Among the many mysteries surrounding Japan’s origins are the toraijin, people who came to Japan from abroad in ancient times.
Just as the spread of rice cultivation helped transform Jomon culture into the Yayoi period, many elements of Japanese culture first arrived from overseas and then took root in Japan. The people who brought those cultures with them appear only in small fragments of the historical record as toraijin.
One such lineage was the Hata clan, known in Japanese as Hata-uji.
The Hata clan is not something most people study deeply in standard textbooks, but it is said to have had an enormous influence on Japanese culture. The knowledge and civilization associated with the Hata clan were considered highly advanced, and various forms of wisdom, technology, and culture are said to have spread after they arrived in Japan.
According to the Kojiki, the Hata clan came to Japan during the reign of Emperor Ojin, the 15th emperor. However, as mentioned earlier, the Kojiki cannot be treated as completely reliable in every detail.
One reason is that Emperor Ojin’s dates are given as a birth in the year 200 and death on March 31, 310. Some researchers have even questioned whether Emperor Ojin himself was a historical person, though the truth remains uncertain.
Theories About the Hata Clan’s Roots
The Hata clan is generally said to have originally been based on the Korean Peninsula, but there are many different theories about its true origins.
The clan is also believed to be connected to Inari worship, including the famous Fushimi Inari tradition that is still widely practiced in Japan today. For travelers, Fushimi Inari and other Inari shrines are real sacred sites, so if you visit, stay in public areas, follow posted rules, and treat the grounds with respect.
In this series, we will explore several episodes and theories surrounding the mysterious Hata clan: where they may have come from, what they did after arriving in Japan, and how they may be connected to the enduring worship of Inari.
