When people talk about the most famous haunted spot in Kanagawa Prefecture, Old Zenba Tunnel is usually near the top of the list. It is also known as “Junichi-kun Tunnel,” after the story of a boy named Junichi who died in a motorcycle accident nearby.
According to the legend, Junichi’s spirit appears around the tunnel. A sign once stood in the area that read, “Don’t die again, Junichi.” But if Junichi had already died, the phrase “don’t die again” feels strangely unsettling.
Here is the story of Old Zenba Tunnel, the reported hauntings around it, and the possible truth behind that famous sign.
What Is Old Zenba Tunnel?
Old Zenba Tunnel is located on Zenba Pass, between Isehara City and Hadano City in Kanagawa Prefecture. Its official name is Zenba Zudo, or Zenba Tunnel.
A newer tunnel, New Zenba Tunnel, opened nearby in 1963, but the old tunnel can still be passed through today. The commonly listed location is 1023 Nagoki, Hadano City, Kanagawa Prefecture. It sits before the newer tunnel, with love hotels on both sides serving as a landmark.
Because this is a real road area, visitors should be careful: do not stop in unsafe places, block traffic, enter private property, or visit in a way that disturbs local residents.
The Accident That Started the Legend
Old Zenba Tunnel became known as a haunted spot after a traffic accident on September 2, 1965.
A 17-year-old boy named Junichi, who lived in Hadano City, was riding his motorcycle over Zenba Pass when he collided head-on with a truck and died.
One detail is often misunderstood: the accident did not happen inside the tunnel itself. It occurred near the tunnel, around a sharp curve. The truck reportedly failed to make the tight turn, leading to the crash. The area was apparently already known for frequent accidents even before the ghost stories spread.
Afterward, people began saying that Junichi’s spirit appeared at Old Zenba Tunnel, and the place became famous as one of Kanagawa’s haunted locations.
But the tunnel has another major mystery: the sign that said, “Don’t die again, Junichi.”
The Mystery of “Don’t Die Again, Junichi”
Near Old Zenba Tunnel, there was once a sign with the message “Don’t die again, Junichi.” The sign was removed in 1989 due to deterioration.
At first glance, it sounds like a memorial warning connected to the accident. But when you think about it, the wording is odd. Junichi had already died, so why would the sign say, “don’t die again”?
The exact reason the sign was put up is not clearly known. Over the years, several explanations have circulated locally and online.
One version says that after Junichi’s spirit began appearing at Old Zenba Tunnel, motorcycles swerving to avoid him caused more accidents. Junichi’s family then put up the sign to ask his spirit not to jump in front of motorcycles anymore.
Another version says drivers saw the ghost of Junichi jumping in front of passing cars at the tunnel. His grieving family put up the sign as a memorial and prayer for his soul.
A third version says that after the accident, Junichi’s parents repeatedly dreamed of him being killed in the crash. They put up the sign as an act of mourning and spiritual offering.
A fourth, more occult-sounding version claims that after Junichi’s death, fatal accidents kept happening near Old Zenba Tunnel—and that every victim was also named Junichi. Because of that, the sign was supposedly put up to say, “Don’t die again, Junichi.”
There are other variations too, but these four are the ones most often repeated.
The fourth story sounds especially supernatural, but it may be too neatly dramatic to be true and could have been added later. The third version, meanwhile, does not feel like quite enough reason on its own to place a roadside sign.
What does seem likely is that accidents continued to happen near Old Zenba Tunnel even after Junichi’s death. Even without any ghostly explanation, the area was already known as an accident-prone road.
So the most realistic possibility is that Junichi’s family put up the sign to prevent more people from suffering the same tragedy. In that case, “Don’t die again, Junichi” may not have meant “Junichi, don’t die a second time.” It may have meant something closer to: “Please don’t die anymore. That is Junichi’s wish.”
Old Zenba Tunnel remains one of Kanagawa’s best-known haunted spots, not only because of the ghost stories but because of the strange, sorrowful wording of that vanished sign.
Kanagawa has many other places tied to dark rumors and tragic histories as well, including Hotel Sky Love, Mitsuike Park, and Ikuta Ryokuchi Park, where a fatal accident involving 15 deaths is often mentioned in haunted-spot discussions.
