Kanagawa Prefecture has no shortage of places linked to ghost stories, but one of Kamakura’s most infamous haunted sites is the Harakiri Yagura at the ruins of Toshoji Temple.

Toshoji was a temple associated with the Hojo clan, the family that led the Kamakura shogunate. When the shogunate fell, the temple was destroyed as well. The cave-like chamber left on the site came to be known as the Harakiri Yagura. The name alone is grim, and according to tradition, it was the place where roughly 870 people on the Hojo side took their own lives when the Kamakura shogunate collapsed.

Below is the history of the Harakiri Yagura at the Toshoji ruins, along with the ghost stories and rumors that have surrounded it for generations.

Reported hauntings at Harakiri Yagura

Harakiri Yagura is located within the Toshoji ruins, only a few minutes on foot from JR Kamakura Station. Near the end of the Kamakura period, the Hojo clan, including Hojo Takatoki, was attacked by forces led by Nitta Yoshisada and driven back to Toshoji.

According to legend, once the Hojo side accepted that defeat was inevitable, 870 warriors cut open their own stomachs at Harakiri Yagura and then set the temple on fire. Because of that story, the site has long been feared as a place where the spirits of samurai and defeated warriors may appear.

The area is said to feel eerie at night, but Harakiri Yagura also has a reputation for being strangely cold even during summer days. Many historic sites in Kamakura become sightseeing spots or walking routes, but casual tourism and strolling are not allowed at Harakiri Yagura.

A sign posted by Hokaiji Temple, which manages the Toshoji ruins, states that because the area is a sacred place for spirits, entry is forbidden except for worship. In other words, visitors should not treat the site as a dare, a horror challenge, or a casual photo stop. Please respect posted signs, temple rules, and the residential neighborhood around the ruins.

Some stories claim that even ordinary tourists who unknowingly stopped by during a Kamakura trip later felt ill. There is also an anecdote involving staff from the office of occult researcher Bintaro Yamaguchi, who reportedly experienced strange phenomena there.

According to an account cited by Real Live, staff visited Harakiri Yagura at the Toshoji ruins for a magazine interview. On the recording tape, they allegedly captured the sound of bells and a deep “boo” sound resembling a conch shell. Since conch shells are associated with battle signals, the sound was considered especially unsettling. The story also says that one staff member tumbled down a slope as if pulled by someone.

Fortunately, the person was not seriously injured. Still, the slope was steep and dim, and the incident could easily have resulted in a major injury.

History and legend of the Toshoji ruins

The Kamakura shogunate, founded by Minamoto no Yoritomo, was Japan’s first warrior government. The Hojo clan later came to control it. In 1333, the third year of the Genko era, Hojo forces were attacked by an army led by Nitta Yoshisada and pushed back to Toshoji.

There, Hojo Takatoki and other members of the Hojo family are said to have given up hope of victory, committed suicide by cutting open their stomachs, and set the temple ablaze. The place associated with that final act is today called Harakiri Yagura.

Ashikaga Takauji, who later founded the Muromachi shogunate, built Hokaiji Temple nearby to pray for the souls of the Hojo clan members who died in the area. Harakiri Yagura at the Toshoji ruins is still managed by Hokaiji today.

However, human remains were not found inside Harakiri Yagura itself. Later, at a group of cave tombs in Kamakura’s Jomyoji area known as the Shakado Oku Yagura-gun, a stone monument inscribed with the date May 28, Genko 3, was discovered along with a large number of partially burned human bones.

There had long been a tradition in Jomyoji that the bodies of those who died in the Toshoji battle were buried in those cave tombs. The discovery was taken as evidence supporting that story.

Today, Harakiri Yagura and the Toshoji ruins sit quietly within a residential area. There are also stories that someone once planned to build houses on the former temple grounds, but construction was halted after those involved were allegedly struck by a curse.

Kanagawa has many other locations tied to frightening rumors and tragic histories. Places such as Hotel Sky Love and Mitsuike Park have been connected to real murder cases, while Ikuta Ryokuchi is associated with an accident that killed 15 people, and the so-called Jason Village is linked in rumor to the massacre of villagers. For horror fans, the prefecture remains one of Japan’s richest areas for dark history and modern ghost lore.
