Kochi Prefecture is home to a well-known haunted spot called Mikaeri Bridge, or the Bridge of Looking Back. It is said to be deep in the mountains, with few clear landmarks nearby, so reaching it can be difficult even for people familiar with the area.
Getting to Mikaeri Bridge
Mikaeri Bridge is said to be located in Tosayamada-cho, Kami City, Kochi Prefecture. The usual route described by visitors follows National Route 32 north, passing Shigeto Station and continuing along the road. From there, the route turns onto a side road on the right, passes a forest road opening monument, then turns left and continues onward.
Eventually, an old red bridge, rusted with age, is said to appear on the left. That weathered bridge is the haunted spot known as Mikaeri Bridge.
Because this is a remote mountain area, anyone researching the location should be careful: roads may be narrow, poorly marked, or unsafe after dark or bad weather. Do not enter private land, abandoned structures, or restricted areas.
Rumored phenomena at Mikaeri Bridge
The most famous story about Mikaeri Bridge is simple: if you look back while crossing the bridge, you may be struck by a terrible curse.
Another rumor says that if someone turns around while crossing, a woman in a kimono quietly rises from the grass. Her body is covered in wounds, and with an expression that seems almost inhuman, she crawls across the ground as if dragging herself forward, chasing the person who looked back. The image is often compared to Sadako from the horror film Ring.
There is also a third story. Some say countless beckoning hands appear from beneath the bridge. These hands are said to grab at a person’s legs and pull them down into the abyss below. In local ghost-story fashion, people speculate that they may be the hands of the dead, or earthbound spirits unable to move on, trying to drag the living into the world of the dead.
One warning often attached to the legend is that nothing may happen at the bridge itself. Even if a visitor experiences no ghostly encounter and feels relieved, the story says they should not let their guard down. According to rumor, some people who avoided paranormal events at haunted places later became involved in serious accidents on the way home.
Also known in suicide rumors
Mikaeri Bridge is also said to be known as a suicide spot. The stories surrounding this are especially grim.
According to the rumors, the drop from the bridge to the river is not high enough for a person to die easily by jumping. Instead, the method described in local accounts involves hanging from the ropes of the bridge. The story frames these deaths as full of suffering and lingering attachment to the world of the living.
Kochi Prefecture has other places with long-standing suicide legends as well, including Cape Ashizuri, which is sometimes discussed in folklore as a site associated with suicide since the Heian period.
The haunted ruin beyond the bridge
Beyond Mikaeri Bridge, there is said to be another frightening haunted location called Rokuhoen. It was once operated as a leisure facility, but it is now abandoned. This place, too, is rumored to be haunted by restless spirits.
Although parts of the site have reportedly begun to be demolished little by little, one story claims that when someone crosses Mikaeri Bridge and looks back, the building appears before their eyes.
Because Rokuhoen is an abandoned facility, it should not be entered. Ruins can be unstable, dangerous, and legally off-limits.
Some people believe the area around Mikaeri Bridge and Rokuhoen is one of Kochi’s strongest spiritual hot spots, a place where many spirits remain trapped and unable to leave. As supposed evidence, visitors claim that photographs taken at Mikaeri Bridge sometimes show a startling number of orbs.
Of course, orbs in photos can have ordinary explanations, such as dust, moisture, or light reflection. Still, within the legend, they are sometimes interpreted as spirits bound to the land.
In that version of the story, the dead draw in the living, and the site becomes a terrifying haunted place where tragedy repeats itself.

高知県にはとある有名な心霊スポットがあります。その場所は「見返り橋」と呼ばれる場所でそれはかなり山奥にあり、周辺にはハッキリとして目印となる場所がないため、たどり着くにはかなり苦労を要する場所です。見返り橋へのアクセス方法。「見返り橋」は高知県香美氏土佐山田町で、国道32号線を北に上りルートでアクセスすることができます。「繁藤駅（しげとうえき）」を通り過ぎてそのまま道なりに直進します。すると右手にあるわき道に入っていきます。そこから林道開通碑を超えて左に曲がり道なりに進んでいくと、 左手に赤くさびた古い橋が見えてくる のです。

。まるでホラー映画「リング」の貞子のようないで立ちですね。そしてもう一つ霊象があります。心霊現象③ 橋の下から無数の手招きが現れるともいわれていて、このおびただしい手が足をつかみ奈落の底へ引きずりこむというも のです。もしかしたら、地獄の亡者や成仏ができない地縛霊が現世の人間達を、黄泉の世界へ引きずり込もうとしているのかもしれませんね。一つ注意が必要です。「この場に行ったけど心霊現象に合わなかったから安心！」と油断してはいけません。なぜなら、心霊スポットで恐ろしい心霊現象に合わなかったが、 帰りの道中でひどい事故に巻き込まれてしまう というと言われているからです。
これだけ怖い心霊スポットが高知県に実際に存在しているのです。自殺の名所としても知られている。実は心霊スポットの他にも自殺の名所としても知られています。その死に方があまりにもおどろおどろしています。橋から川までの落差はそこまでなく、人が飛び降りて死ぬというのはほぼ不可能に近い そうです。では、どのような自殺方法をとるのかというと、 橋のロープをツタって首を吊るというやり方 なのです。それだけ苦しみと現世への未練が複雑に絡みながら死んでいくというのです。
他にも高知県には平安時代から有名な自殺の名所があるのです。高知県の心霊スポット 【高知県の心霊スポット】足摺岬は平安時代から自殺の名所【民俗学】 。「見返り橋」の奥にはさらに恐怖の心霊スポットがある。実は、「見返り橋」を渡った先には「麓宝園」と呼ばれている所があるのですが、ここも高知県の心霊スポットとして有名な場所です。「麓宝園」は昔レジャー施設として運営されていましたが、現在は廃墟 になっています。ここにも浮かばれない霊が彷徨っているといわれているのです。
今では少しずつ取り壊しが始めっているものの、 「見返り橋」を渡り後ろを振り向いた人の目の前に、その建物が浮かんでくる とさえ言われているのです。おそらく「見返り橋」や「麓宝園」一帯が高知県の中でも、有数の霊的な巣窟として多くの霊が、この地から脱げ出せずに苦しんでいるのでしょう。その証拠として、見返り橋を訪れて写真さ杖をすると凄まじい数のオーブが映し出されるのです。もしかしたら、このオーブはこの地に縛られている霊なのかもしれませんね。死んだ霊が、さらに自殺者を引き込み、連鎖的に巻き込んでしまう恐怖の心霊スポット化しているのです。
