Across Japan, there are countless haunted places, and Kagoshima Prefecture has its own local legends that many travelers never hear about. Among them, Kaimon Tunnel is one of the best known.
The tunnel is located around Mount Kaimon, also called Kaimondake, in Kagoshima. Even during the day it is said to be unusually dark, and the road is narrow enough that passing another car can be difficult. There are reportedly a couple of pull-off spaces where vehicles can wait, but the cramped shape and dim atmosphere have helped give the area its reputation as a frightening place.
If you ever pass through, treat it as a real road first and a haunted location second: drive carefully, do not stop in unsafe areas, and do not enter woods, private land, or restricted zones.
The Two Tunnels Locals Call Kaimon Tunnel
Kaimon Tunnel is often described as one of Kyushu’s better-known haunted spots, and in Kagoshima it is considered one of the major ones. Strictly speaking, the name refers to two tunnels: Mikuramoto No. 1 Tunnel on the south side and Mikuramoto No. 2 Tunnel on the north side. Locals often group them together and call the area Kaimon Tunnel.
One reason the tunnels became known as a haunted place is the wooded area around them. According to local rumor, the surrounding thickets have long been associated with suicides. Among the stories most often repeated is that the ghost of a woman who hanged herself appears there frequently.
There are other places in Kagoshima with similar rumors, but people who know the story say Kaimon Tunnel feels different when you are actually there. In haunted-place folklore, locations connected to suicide are sometimes said to draw in the next victim, as if the dead are pulling the living closer. That belief is part of what gives Kaimon Tunnel its fearsome reputation.
Another rumor says that, during the war, a field hospital once stood somewhere near the tunnel. Because of that, people sometimes claim that the spirits of soldiers appear nearby. The story says their resentment over losing family in the war, or their intense desire to protect the country, may have become lingering emotion that still wanders between the spirit world and reality.
In particular, the soldier spirits are said not to realize they have died. According to the legend, they still walk the area night after night.
The Woman Looking Down from the Ceiling
The most famous paranormal story at Kaimon Tunnel involves a woman’s ghost seen near the ceiling.
Kaimon Tunnel has an unusual structure compared with ordinary tunnels. In addition to artificial lighting, square openings were built into the ceiling to let in sunlight and help drivers see inside the tunnel.
According to the legend, a woman’s spirit appears at those ceiling openings, peering down or glaring sharply at people passing below. The frightening part of the story is that she is seen in a place where a living person should not be able to stand.
Some versions of the tale say that drivers who accidentally meet her gaze have later been involved in accidents on the way home. Others interpret the story as if the spirit senses people who come only for a thrill and punishes them for treating the place lightly. Whether taken as folklore or warning, it has strengthened Kaimon Tunnel’s image as a place that rejects casual daredevils.
There is another story told about the tunnel after a car has passed through safely. In this version, when the driver later checks the back seat, the seat is wet. The mark is said to be the trace of the woman’s spirit quietly sitting there after dying near the tunnel.
The meaning of the story is clear: Do not come here lightly.
Some retellings go even further, saying that the resentment from Kaimon Tunnel may remain inside the car even after the driver has left the area, and that the presence may continue to cling to the vehicle. This is why Kaimon Tunnel is often described as one of Kagoshima’s most intense haunted locations.
Other Haunted Places in Kagoshima
Kaimon Tunnel is not the only haunted spot in Kagoshima. The prefecture has old ruins, dark and dangerous tunnels, and other places where ghost stories have been passed down for years.
One well-known example is a wooded area in the Kiri-oda district of Yokoyama-cho, Kanoya City. It is said to be about 10 minutes from central Kanoya by Prefectural Route 540. At first glance, the woods may not look especially frightening, but at night, rumors say several eerie male ghosts can be seen walking there.
People who believe they are sensitive to spirits sometimes claim the energy in the area is so heavy that it makes them feel ill.
The story behind the location is said to go back more than a thousand years. According to local history and legend, local warriors once gathered here to fight against the imperial court, which represented the central government. The rebellion was reportedly large and violent, but the rebels were captured and executed in the area.
A memorial mound for severed heads is said to have been built to pacify the dead. Even so, the story claims their anger and resentment never fully disappeared, and that the place still gives off a powerful spiritual presence. Some say the spirits of the dead are still seen there today, and that anyone who visits carelessly may anger them, causing a spirit to follow them home.
Like any wooded or historical area, visitors should avoid entering private property, stay out at night if the area is unsafe, and treat memorial sites with respect.
Takeoka Tunnel, the Ghost Tunnel
Another Kagoshima location often mentioned in haunted-place discussions is Takeoka Tunnel. Some people may wonder why so many ghost stories involve tunnels, but in Japanese urban legends, tunnels are often seen as places close to darkness and the other world.
Takeoka Tunnel is known in local rumors as a place where traffic accidents have occurred, and some stories claim those accidents may be connected to spirits seen in the area. People who know the tunnel’s reputation may avoid passing through it, while those who do use it should simply drive with extra care and attention.
Takeoka Tunnel is located roughly a 30-minute walk from Kagoshima-Chuo Station on the JR Ibusuki Makurazaki Line. Among Kagoshima’s haunted tunnels, it is often described as being nearly as famous as Kaimon Tunnel.
The origin of its ghostly reputation is said to involve a suicide near a shrine close to the tunnel. At the entrance area is Takebe Shrine, and a route from there once served as a school path toward a junior high school.
According to the story, a student died by suicide in the mountain woods along that route, causing a major stir in the local community. The reason is rumored to have been bullying or severe mental distress, though the details are uncertain. In the legend, the student’s lingering resentment still fills the tunnel.
Some versions say the dead student’s attachment to the living world remains so strong that it has turned the area into a place of negative spiritual power. The rumor claims that this resentment affects drivers passing through and may contribute to accidents. People who consider themselves spiritually sensitive are sometimes warned to keep their minds steady when passing through.
Whether these accounts are taken as ghost stories, local folklore, or cautionary tales, Kagoshima has no shortage of places wrapped in rumor. Kaimon Tunnel remains one of the most famous, not only because of its dark road and unusual ceiling openings, but because the stories around it all carry the same warning: fear, grief, and resentment should not be treated as entertainment.

そして、開聞トンネルを何とか無事に通過したとしても、 まだ恐怖が残っています。車でトンネルを通り過ぎた後に車を一端、停車させて後部座席を見ると、シートが濡れているのです。これはトンネルの近くで自殺を図った女性の霊が静かに座っていた後と言われているのですが、。「軽い気持ちで、ここを訪れるのではない。」。という警告でもあるのです。開聞トンネルを離れ、帰路についても、まだ、その怨念は車に留まっており、下手をするとその車に 居座り続ける可能性もあります。
