English Version

Shimane Prefecture is often described as one of Japan’s most spiritually charged regions. In October, it is said that the countless kami of Japan gather in Izumo, and Izumo Taisha is famous as a shrine of matchmaking and relationships. At the same time, Japanese myth also places the entrance to Yomi, the land of the dead, in the Izumo area. In that sense, Shimane has long been imagined as a borderland between this world and the next.

That may be why Shimane has so many notorious haunted places. This time, we look at Kamome-so, an abandoned building in Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture. Among ghost-story fans, it is known for a chilling anecdote: the famous psychic Aiko Gibo is said to have attempted a cleansing there, only to give up.

According to the rumor, Gibo died about a month later, leading some people to whisper about “the curse of Kamome-so.” Despite its gentle-sounding name, Kamome-so has become known as one of Shimane’s most feared haunted ruins. Some even claim it was once connected to human experimentation. But what was Kamome-so really? And is there any truth to the so-called curse?

Where is Kamome-so?

Kamome-so is said to be located along Prefectural Route 29 in the Hinomisaki area of Taisha-cho, Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture, not far from Izumo Taisha.

It is not only famous within Shimane. Among Japanese occult fans and abandoned-building enthusiasts, Kamome-so is a nationally known haunted ruin. Today, the building is reportedly filled with broken glass, shattered wooden frames, and unsettling graffiti. Even in daylight, accounts describe it as dim and oppressive.

Many stories claim that numerous spirits linger there. Common rumors include: “If you take a photo, you will capture something paranormal,” or “You can feel someone watching you and hear human voices.” Another well-known warning says that people who visit Kamome-so may get into an accident on the way home.

Because Kamome-so is an abandoned structure and may be private property or structurally unsafe, it should not be entered. Broken flooring, falling debris, glass, and other hazards can be dangerous even without any supernatural element.

What was Kamome-so originally?

Before it became a ruin, Kamome-so has been described in many different ways. Some say it was a lodging facility. Others claim it was a psychiatric hospital, a nursing home, an isolation ward for tuberculosis or pneumonia patients, or a health retreat. The truth is not completely clear.

Because of that uncertainty, darker rumors also spread, including claims that it was a hideout for North Korean agents or a place where human experiments were conducted. The idea behind these stories is that false information may have been circulated because there was something to hide.

What is known is that before becoming abandoned, Kamome-so was at least used as a public lodging or resort-style facility. Before that, it appears to have been a small inn. However, that inn is also said to have reused an even older facility, which may explain why so many conflicting stories exist. The full history remains uncertain.

The basement and the “sealed room”

Kamome-so has remained one of Shimane’s most feared haunted spots for years, even though its original purpose is still debated. Among the places inside the ruin, the basement is the area most often described as dangerous.

Some visitors have claimed that they suddenly got goosebumps when standing in front of the stairs leading underground. Others say they came for a test of courage but turned back the moment they saw the basement entrance because they felt an intense sense of danger.

At the bottom of the stairs, there is reportedly a narrow entrance to “something,” with various objects scattered beyond it. People who believe Kamome-so was originally a lodging facility call this area the “basement guest rooms.” Those who believe it was once a psychiatric hospital call it an “underground isolation ward.” The names differ, but many accounts agree that the basement is the most unsettling part of the site.

There are also said to be several rusted machines in the basement whose purpose is unclear and which are different from ordinary boiler-room equipment. Because some people argued that such machinery would not have been necessary for a simple inn, rumors about human experimentation or a covert hideout seem to have developed from there.

Reported experiences at Kamome-so

Stories from people who say they visited Kamome-so include the following:

  • They went there late at night for a dare and heard noises, even though no one else should have been inside.
  • After returning from Kamome-so, they developed a high fever.
  • While joking around with friends, they shouted “Hello?” toward the basement and heard a voice that was not theirs answer back.
  • A ceiling light that remained in the building was swaying, even though there was no wind.
  • On the way back from sightseeing at Izumo Taisha, someone found the abandoned building and considered entering, but suddenly had trouble breathing. When they left the area, the breathlessness stopped. Only later did they learn it was a famous haunted spot.

Many of these stories focus on the basement, but another detail often mentioned is a room known as the “sealed room” or “room that does not open.” It is said to be located deeper inside the building and is usually closed, though on rare occasions it is supposedly found open. Rumor says that people who enter may suffer pneumonia or a high fever afterward.

Because one theory claims the site was once an isolation ward for illnesses such as pneumonia, this rumor has become especially memorable among occult fans.

Many exploration videos of Kamome-so have been posted online. In some of them, a stark white, strangely out-of-place room can be seen deep underground. While other rooms are littered with glass, wood, curtains, and debris, this room appears to contain almost no furniture or household items, only white concrete, giving it an especially eerie atmosphere.

As a ruin, Kamome-so also carries ordinary physical risks such as collapse. It was reportedly once a hangout for delinquents as well, making it dangerous even aside from ghost stories. According to local rumors, demolition was attempted multiple times in the past, but workers involved in the job suffered misfortune one after another. Because of that, the building was supposedly left untouched.

Stories of tuberculosis or pneumonia sanatoriums later becoming resort facilities are not uncommon in Japan. The background of the famous horror story Ring also draws on that kind of historical atmosphere.

Did Aiko Gibo really flee from Kamome-so?

Aiko Gibo was one of Japan’s most famous psychics, especially during the occult boom of the 1980s. She frequently appeared on television programs about the supernatural and passed away from stomach cancer in 2003.

Many viewers considered her unusually convincing. She was said to reveal secrets of the dead that even bereaved families did not know, to show genuine fear toward spirits, and to stand her ground even against skeptical scientists. To some fans, “Gibo was the real thing.”

She was also remembered for using simple methods of cleansing and memorial prayer, and for not exploiting people through expensive spiritual sales schemes. That reputation is one reason she is still spoken of with respect.

According to one famous anecdote, Gibo visited Kamome-so for a paranormal TV program and attempted a cleansing, but abandoned it because there were simply too many spirits. When she died of stomach cancer about a month later, the story spread as “the curse of Kamome-so.”

Of course, it is easy to call this an urban legend. Medically, it is difficult to imagine cancer appearing and becoming fatal within just one month. Still, the timing fed the rumor, and Kamome-so became known nationwide as a haunted place so terrifying that even Aiko Gibo supposedly fled from it — or was cursed by it.

Kamome-so’s place in Shimane ghost lore

Kamome-so remains one of Izumo City’s best-known haunted ruins. In Shimane, a region already associated with the boundary between the living world and the afterlife, it sits alongside other eerie locations in local occult lore, such as Iwami Tatamigaura and even Izumo Taisha, which some legends connect to powerful spirits from Japanese myth.

Because no one seems to agree completely on what Kamome-so originally was, the building has become a container for many fears: illness, isolation, abandoned machinery, hidden rooms, and things that should not be disturbed. Many people have reportedly visited it because of its fame, but far fewer say they would ever want to return.

Whether or not the legends are true, Kamome-so’s reputation comes from a very human kind of fear — the instinctive feeling that a place is wrong, unsafe, and better left alone.
