Kanagawa Prefectural Mitsuike Park in Yokohama is a large public park named for its three ponds. With tennis courts, a pool, and famous cherry blossoms in spring, it is a well-loved recreation spot for locals.
But the park also has a darker reputation. A suspected murder occurred there in the past, and some say the victim’s ghost still appears at night. There are also rumors of suicides and, in more recent years, bodies being found in the park. For that reason, Mitsuike Park is often listed among Kanagawa’s haunted places.
A Popular Park With a Nighttime Reputation
Mitsuike Park is spacious and family-friendly during the day, especially in cherry blossom season. At night, however, many locals reportedly avoid it. The reason is simple: people say “something appears.”
The park has long been known as a haunted spot, largely because of a suspected murder case from the past. Even today, rumors continue to circulate that bodies are sometimes discovered within the grounds.
For example, around April 25, 2018, information spread among locals and on social media claiming that a body had been found in the park. Since it apparently did not become a major newspaper story, some people assumed it may have been a suicide, though the details remain unclear.
Large parks in Japan are sometimes associated with suicide cases, and Mitsuike Park is not the only place with that kind of reputation. According to accounts attributed to park security staff, two or three suicide victims may be found in the park in a typical year, with many reportedly involving hanging. Whether those stories are accurate or exaggerated, they help explain why some locals prefer not to go near the park after dark.
If you visit, treat Mitsuike Park as a normal public space: go during open hours, stay on marked paths, do not enter restricted areas, and avoid wandering alone at night.
The Unsolved Case and the Woman Said to Appear by the Slide
On April 12, 1989, a suspected murder occurred in Mitsuike Park.
A 25-year-old woman, identified in reports only as Ms. T and described as a department-store dispatch worker, was found dead in a wooded area of the park. She reportedly had injuries to her head and legs that appeared to have been caused by a blunt object, as well as marks on her neck suggesting strangulation.
The perpetrator was never arrested, and the details remain unclear. The case is still considered unsolved.
Perhaps because of that, people say the ghost of a woman still appears in Mitsuike Park. The most common story places her at the park’s jumbo slide, where she is said to sit with a resentful or sorrowful expression.
Was she killed near the slide? Did she have some attachment to that place? No one knows. But in local ghost stories, both the slide and the surrounding woods are treated as areas best avoided after dark.
Do Tragedies Leave Something Behind?
Some people may wonder whether the park’s grim reputation is simply the result of its size. A large public park naturally has more secluded places, and that alone can lead to frightening rumors.
Others believe the past murder left something unhealthy in the atmosphere of Mitsuike Park. In Japanese haunted-place lore, it is often said that people carrying deep sadness or emotional darkness can be affected by a location’s negative energy, sometimes with tragic results. That is not something that can be proven, but it is a common pattern in these stories.
A similar reputation surrounds Ikuta Ryokuchi, another park in Kanagawa Prefecture. That park is also known as a haunted spot, and it was once the site of an accident in which 15 people died. Today, it too is said to be connected to suicide cases.
Mitsuike Park in Kanagawa’s Haunted Landscape
Mitsuike Park is a real, popular park in Yokohama, but it also carries stories of an unsolved death, rumored suicides, and a female ghost said to appear near the jumbo slide.
Kanagawa Prefecture has many other locations with dark reputations, including the abandoned Hotel Skylove, known for a murder case, as well as Nojima Park, Jason Village, Shitodo Cave, Yabitsu Pass, Old Zenba Tunnel, Yamagami Tunnel, and Uchikoshi Bridge.
For travelers and horror fans, Mitsuike Park is best approached with respect. Enjoy it as a public park in the daytime, be considerate of locals and victims’ families, and remember that rumors are not the same as confirmed facts.
