English Version

It is said that Nazi Germany looted as many as 600,000 artworks from across Europe during World War II, including paintings, sculptures, and other cultural treasures. As Hitler expanded German territory and pursued military strategy, he also put enormous energy into collecting art. Among the seized works were reportedly pieces by famous artists such as Picasso, Van Gogh, and Chagall.

Was this simply a prize of war, a way to humiliate conquered nations, or was there another motive behind it? Several theories have been discussed over the years.

The Museum Hitler Wanted to Build

Hitler himself had dreamed of becoming a painter from boyhood into young adulthood. After the death of his mother, Klara, he went to Vienna and tried to enter the Academy of Fine Arts.

One of the few detailed accounts of Hitler’s youth comes from August Kubizek, often described as his only close friend from that period, who once lived with him and later wrote about those years in The Young Hitler I Knew. What matters here is that Hitler failed the entrance examination for the art academy.

It is often said that the style Hitler wanted to paint in was very different from the artistic trends favored by the academy at the time. That rejection seems to have left a deep psychological mark on him. Later, as Hitler’s regime and Nazi Germany grew more powerful, he reportedly spoke often with his close associate Albert Speer, an architect, about building the world’s greatest art museum in Linz.

The Theory of Revenge Against Jews

One theory claims that Hitler’s art collecting was tied to resentment from his Vienna years: his poverty, his conflict with the art academy, and his desire for revenge against Jews, expressed through the seizure of property, including art.

However, when looking more closely, this explanation alone seems difficult to accept. Although Hitler himself had almost no steady income at the time, it is said that his father’s and mother’s pensions provided a considerable amount of money. He also had dealings with Jewish art dealers. For that reason, it is hard to say that this single experience was the sole motivation.

Hitler’s Attempt to Define “Legitimate” Art

There are many theories surrounding Nazi art looting during the war. Taken together, one possibility is that Hitler wanted to assert his own idea of what art was supposed to be: art recognized, approved, and legitimized by his own worldview.

As a side note, even today, long after the war, roughly 100,000 artworks that disappeared during that period are still said to be missing.

Albert Speer’s Grand Vision

As the war entered its later stages, Albert Speer, originally an architect, became Minister of Armaments and helped raise wartime military production efficiency to its peak. Hitler was deeply impressed by Speer’s talent as an architect and had asked him to develop plans for a massive redesign of Berlin.

Speer created detailed models of this imagined metropolis, which reportedly delighted Hitler. Naturally, the city plans included an enormous art museum, where artworks gathered through the war were meant to be displayed.

But when Berlin fell, those grand plans collapsed with it.
