Have you ever heard of Yomotsu Hegui, a term that appears in the Kojiki, one of Japan’s oldest mythological texts?
In simple terms, it means eating or drinking in Yomi, the land of the dead. More specifically, the phrase refers to eating food cooked at the hearth of the underworld. In Japanese myth, this is not just a meal. It is a boundary you may not be able to cross back from.
What happens if you eat food from Yomi?
According to the belief behind Yomotsu Hegui, if a living person eats food from the land of the dead, they can no longer return to the world of the living.
One possible background to this idea comes from old burial customs. Food was sometimes buried with the dead, and it was believed that by eating it, the deceased could rest peacefully. But if a living person entered Yomi and ate food prepared there, the meaning changes: they would be joining the dead, sleeping forever, and unable to come back.
The legend of Izanami and Izanagi
The best-known story connected to Yomotsu Hegui is the myth of the goddess Izanami.
After giving birth to Kagutsuchi, the god of fire, Izanami suffers fatal burns and dies. Her husband, Izanagi, is devastated. Unable to forget her, he travels to Yomi to bring her back.
But for some reason, Izanami refuses to return to the world of the living. The reason is that she has already eaten the food of Yomi.
In her heart, Izanami still wants to return. She tells Izanagi that she will ask the beings of Yomi whether it is possible, but she makes one request: while she is gone, he must not look at her.
Izanagi cannot resist. Out of curiosity, he looks.
What he sees is no longer the wife he remembers. Izanami’s body is rotting, crawling with maggots, and surrounded by terrifying thunder deities. Shocked, Izanagi runs away.
Izanami chases after him but cannot catch him. In anger, she declares that she will kill 1,000 people on the surface every day. Izanagi answers that he will cause 1,500 people to be born every day.
In this myth, the rule of Yomotsu Hegui helps explain why Izanami cannot simply leave the underworld behind.
Yomotsu Hegui in modern horror and fantasy
The idea of eating food from another world appears in many modern works, including anime, games, and horror stories. It is not always named directly, but the motif is very similar.
Spirited Away
In Spirited Away, the main character’s parents enter a strange other world and eat the food they find there. As a result, they are transformed into pigs because they have eaten food meant for the gods.
Chihiro, who does not eat anything at first, avoids that fate. However, she becomes deeply involved in that world and is eventually forced to live there for a time. To survive in that realm, she must eat its food or risk disappearing. Haku appears and gives her something to eat.
This can be seen as a modern variation of the Yomotsu Hegui motif: food from another realm changes your relationship to that realm.
SIREN
SIREN is a horror game published by Sony. Its story also centers on people and a village drawn into another world.
In that place, red rain continues to fall. The rain is said to be the blood of a god, and taking it into the body turns a person into a resident of that other world.
At one point in the story, when someone is about to drink the water, another character warns them with a line meaning, in effect, “You know about Yomotsu Hegui, don’t you?” The warning is clear: do not consume what belongs to that world.
Is there Yomotsu Hegui in everyday life?
After hearing this, you might wonder: if someone eats food offered at a household Buddhist altar, would that count as Yomotsu Hegui?
Generally, no. Yomotsu Hegui is understood as food cooked in Yomi, using the hearth and fire of the land of the dead. Fruit or food prepared in this world and placed as an offering on an altar is not usually considered the same thing.
Even today, there are also beliefs that eating food offered to a deity can bring people closer to that deity. In other words, sacred food and underworld food are not necessarily treated the same way.
Final thoughts
Yomotsu Hegui is a simple idea with a deeply unsettling meaning: if you eat the food of the dead, you may become part of their world.
So if, by some strange accident, you ever find yourself in Yomi or another mysterious realm, remember the old warning. No matter how tempting the food looks, it may be safer not to eat.

SIREN 。
