South Korea and Japan are neighboring countries that have often clashed over what is commonly called “historical understanding.” This article argues that history should be about knowing facts, not simply adopting a political interpretation of them.
One issue South Korea frequently brings to the international stage is the comfort women controversy. Statues often called “Statues of Peace” have been installed in various places around the world, but this article takes the position that some widely circulated claims about wartime comfort women differ from the facts.
The Asahi Shimbun Reports and the Yoshida Testimony
When many people hear the phrase “comfort women,” they may picture Korean women being forcibly taken by Japan during the war. According to this article, one factor that helped shape that image was a 1982 report by the Asahi Shimbun. The report introduced testimony from a man who claimed he had been involved in mobilization work and said Korean women had been taken by force.
That man was Seiji Yoshida, who described himself as a former wartime labor mobilization official. He later published a book claiming that Korean comfort women existed and that women had been forcibly taken from Jeju Island.
Yoshida continued writing about comfort women and even traveled to South Korea at his own expense to apologize. The Asahi Shimbun reported on his activities in 1983.
However, people familiar with Jeju Island at the time challenged Yoshida’s claims, saying that no such events had occurred. This article argues that Yoshida’s testimony, as reported by the Asahi Shimbun, lacked evidence.
The article also points to a 1992 Asahi Shimbun report that described Korean women as having been forcibly mobilized under the name of a wartime women’s labor corps. It argues that there was no physical evidence proving direct involvement by the Japanese military in the alleged forced taking of women, and says later investigations also found no such proof.
In 2014, the Asahi Shimbun held a press conference attended by its president and issued a formal apology regarding parts of its comfort women reporting. In 2015, a lawsuit was filed against the newspaper by plaintiffs who argued that the reports had spread a distorted version of history internationally and damaged Japan’s reputation.
Were Comfort Women Paid Workers?
This article acknowledges that comfort women existed, but argues that they were not forcibly taken. Instead, it says they were recruited through advertisements and worked for pay.
According to this view, recruitment ads from the period have been found, including ads written in Korean, and comfort women were paid for sex work rather than held as “sex slaves.” The article also notes that prostitution was legal at the time, and argues that the term “comfort women” referred to women who accompanied the military to provide sexual services as a business arrangement.
The article further claims that comfort women were said to have earned high wages. In present-day value, it says, some may have earned the equivalent of tens of millions of yen over only a few years.
Apologies, Compensation, and the 1965 Agreement
The article then turns to Japan’s postwar relationship with South Korea. It argues that even though the comfort women issue, as described by South Korea, did not exist in the way often claimed, Japan has repeatedly apologized because it was the defeated country after World War II.
It also points to the 1965 agreement between Japan and South Korea concerning property, claims, and economic cooperation. The article says this agreement confirmed that claims between the two countries were settled “completely and finally,” and that Japan provided economic cooperation to South Korea under that framework.
According to the article, Japan provided a total of 500 million dollars in economic cooperation. For that reason, it criticizes South Korea for continuing to promote the comfort women issue globally and installing Statues of Peace.
Summary
This article presents the comfort women issue as a controversy that spread internationally because of reports it considers inaccurate, especially those connected to the Yoshida testimony and the Asahi Shimbun.
It argues that Japan has apologized and provided compensation or economic cooperation, while South Korea continues to highlight the issue around the world. The article ends by suggesting that the lack of media coverage of this perspective, and the tendency to focus mainly on South Korea’s claims, reveals another kind of darkness in the way history is reported.
