The Kyushu University Vivisection Incident is one of the darkest medical war crimes associated with wartime Japan. In the case, living prisoners of war were subjected to procedures such as lung removal and injections of diluted seawater into their blood vessels. Eight prisoners died.
Later, during investigations and trials under GHQ, an even more shocking allegation surfaced: that human flesh had been eaten.
The idea is grotesque even beside the confirmed facts of the vivisections. But did cannibalism really happen? There is also a theory that the cannibalism accusation was fabricated.
Was the cannibalism allegation fabricated?
GHQ reportedly described the Kyushu University Vivisection Incident as an act of “unparalleled barbarity.” Given that the United States also carried out its own experimental acts during the war, some people find that judgment difficult to accept without reservation. Still, there is no question that the incident itself was horrific.
It is a fact that operations with almost no chance of survival were performed on prisoners of war. It is also clear that those acts were inhumane.
Among all the disturbing elements of the case, the alleged cannibalism is especially chilling. The suspicion was that, during the experiments, someone may have eaten a prisoner’s liver.
However, there is a theory that this cannibalism story was a GHQ fabrication. In the actual case, people connected to the incident were found guilty, and one person later died by suicide in prison. But the charges were related to performing live human experiments and failing to properly bury the bodies. The cannibalism allegation was not prosecuted because there was no evidence.
The interrogations took place in occupied Japan immediately after the war. In other words, citizens of defeated Japan were being questioned by the victorious GHQ. Some accounts say these interrogations were not calm, lawful, or careful, but closer to torture.
From GHQ’s perspective, the doctors had used young airmen as experimental material, so it is not hard to imagine that the questioning was harsh and intense.
As for the cannibalism allegation, it cannot be definitively dismissed, but it also cannot be stated as fact. The doctor from the First Department of Surgery who was convicted in the case and later died by suicide in prison is said to have left almost no records about the dissections.
At the time of the experiments, Fukuoka had been devastated by air raids. Food was scarce, and daily life was desperate. In that environment, was human flesh actually eaten? There is no way to know for certain.
Was the incident organized by Kyushu University?
Kyushu Imperial University, now Kyushu University, has denied that the incident was carried out as an institutional act. According to that position, it was not ordered by the university as an organization, but carried out by certain individuals.
The incident is often said to have been triggered by a military order to “dispose of” prisoners, in the context of Japan’s severe wartime shortages. In that sense, it may not have been a direct university order.
Even so, it is horrifying to think that these acts took place in a university medical school dissection room, with multiple doctors and nurses present, as seawater was injected and internal organs were removed.
A grotesque act took place in a place of learning, and in the trials, 29 people connected to the case were punished. Even if the university leadership did not directly order it, the involvement of Kyushu Imperial University’s medical faculty as an organized setting is difficult to deny.
At the time, nearly every major institution in Japan, including universities, was expected to obey or cooperate with the military.
The incident seems to have emerged from a combination of wartime power structures, the desire to develop artificial blood, and a chilling curiosity about how much blood loss a human being could survive. Military personnel were reportedly present at the experiments, and there were also observers from other departments and universities.
For travelers and history fans: this is connected to real institutions and real victims. If you visit related areas in Fukuoka, do so respectfully, follow campus and museum rules, and avoid treating the site as a thrill-seeking destination.
Acquitted of cannibalism, but warped by war
A man from Fukuoka who witnessed the vivisection as a medical student later said, “War drives people mad. Nothing remains but misery and stupidity.”
He also recalled that the mental state of the time was so abnormal that it would be unimaginable in an era of peace.
The incident happened only one month after he entered the university. He was reportedly told it was not a dissection, but an operation.
What was in the minds of the doctors who cut into the bodies of young prisoners whose hearts were still beating strongly in the final phase of the war?
And why does the fabrication theory exist? Through this case, one can glimpse not only the collapse of medical ethics in wartime Japan, but also the power relationship between defeated Japan and the American occupation authorities.
Summary
In the Kyushu University Vivisection Incident, living and apparently healthy prisoners of war were subjected to experimental operations, and eight died.
The cannibalism allegation that emerged during the investigation was not proven, and those involved were not found guilty of that charge. Some believe it may have been fabricated by GHQ.
Eight airmen had flown to Japan in planes used to bomb the country. Doctors then placed them on operating tables and cut into them.
It was an incident born from the distorted ethics of war, where ordinary moral limits had been pushed into something unrecognizable.
