English Version

In the United States, there are strange back roads with names that sound ominous even before you hear the stories behind them. One of the most infamous is Lawler Ford Road in Glencoe, west of St. Louis, Missouri. Since the 1950s, it has been known by a much creepier nickname: Zombie Road.

There are several rumors about how the road got that name. One story claims that a railroad worker who once worked in the area rose from his grave and was seen walking around from time to time. Another says that a patient named “Zombie” escaped from a nearby hospital, and that his blood-soaked gown was later found on the road.

Other stories focus on the old railroad that once ran through the area. According to local rumors, the spirits of people killed in railway accidents still wander near the road.

The railroad accident rumors

The first railroad tracks in the area were reportedly laid in 1853. After the line was built, many accidents were said to have occurred, with a large number of victims. One explanation often given is the presence of a sharp curve, which supposedly caused trains to derail.

Because there were said to be so many accidents, the tracks were eventually removed. Today, only small traces of the old railroad are said to remain. Even so, the stories claim that the souls of those who died in the accidents still linger there.

There are many different rumors surrounding Zombie Road, and the truth is difficult to separate from local legend. What can be said is that, for believers in the stories, the area has long felt like a place where something unseen and unsettling is at work.

The shadow figures said to appear on Zombie Road

Zombie Road is described as a wooded road of about 3.2 kilometers, or roughly 2 miles, ending near bluffs along the Meramec River.

According to the legends, something sometimes appears out of the darkness there: human-shaped black shadows, often called “shadow people.” These figures are said to appear beside the road, in dim places, or among the trees. Witnesses describe them as having a strange presence, strong enough that people may believe an actual person is standing there.

But when someone approaches, the shadow reportedly vanishes without a trace.

Shadow people in photographs

There are also claims that shadow people have been captured in photographs.

Around March 2005, one report described more than ten shadow figures standing in a line on top of a hill. Around October 2005, another witness reportedly managed to photograph shadow people, then felt an unnatural cold and began to shiver immediately afterward.

Some rumors suggest that these shadow people could be the spirits of those who died during the American Civil War. However, the true nature of the sightings remains unknown.

There are likely many more stories and witness accounts connected to Zombie Road and its shadow people. If you are interested in haunted American roads, this is one legend worth researching further.

If you ever consider visiting the real area, check current public access rules in advance, stay on marked public paths, avoid trespassing, and do not explore at night or in unsafe conditions.
