English Version

Dakigaeri Gorge in Semboku, Akita Prefecture, is known for its dramatic river scenery, old tunnels, and waterfalls. It also has a few unsettling rumors attached to it.

According to local ghost stories, one of the hand-carved tunnels is said to be haunted by an old man crawling on all fours. Another rumor claims that if you say “I’m sorry” inside the tunnel, your body will suddenly feel heavy.

There is also a story that the spirit of a child appears near the river in Dakigaeri Gorge.

Many of the tunnels in this area are said to have been dug by hand, which adds to the eerie atmosphere when walking through them. The area around the waterfall is also rumored to be known as a suicide spot.

Dakigaeri Gorge is a real scenic area, so if you visit, stay on marked paths, avoid entering closed or unstable tunnels, and keep away from dangerous riverbanks and waterfalls, especially in bad weather or low light.
