Bairin-en, located in the Hamada Ikenosawa area of Akita City, Akita Prefecture, is associated with several unsettling local rumors.
People say a “spider woman” appears here. There are also stories of visitors getting into accidents on the way home from Bairin-en, and of a woman in white standing in front of the sign at the entrance. Another rumor claims that the spirits of people who died by suicide wander through the woods.
The area has apparently long been regarded as a place with many suicides. There is also a rumor that it was once the scene of a murder, though details are unclear.
If you visit, be respectful and cautious. Avoid entering wooded, private, or restricted areas, and do not go at night or alone just to search for ghosts.
