English Version

History is full of people whose origins were never fully explained, and others who died leaving only questions behind. One of the most famous of these figures is the young man known as Kaspar Hauser.

In May 1828, in Unschlittplatz in Nuremberg, then part of the Kingdom of Bavaria, a boy who could not speak was discovered. After guards took him to a guardhouse, he awkwardly wrote only one name: Kaspar Hauser. Even today, the date of his discovery is clearly recorded as May 26, 1828.

The boy with no words

The boy was found in Nuremberg shortly after Pentecost. At first, he reportedly could not communicate at all, leaving the guards unsure what to do with him. When they offered him a pencil and paper to see whether he could write, he wrote the words “Kaspar Hauser.” From that point on, the mysterious boy was known by that name.

He had almost nothing with him when he was found, except for a letter. The letter was addressed to Captain Friedrich von Wessenig, who served in the 4th Company of the 6th Light Cavalry Regiment stationed in Nuremberg.

According to the letter, the boy’s first name was Kaspar, his date of birth was April 30, 1812, and his father had been a cavalryman who had already died. However, Captain Friedrich reportedly had no knowledge of the matter.

The identity of the letter’s writer remains unknown. The message asked that the boy be placed in the cavalry if he seemed fit to become a cavalryman like his father. It also included a chilling line: if he was too much trouble, he should be killed. Since the boy’s origins could not be verified, the authorities could not simply make him a soldier. Instead, Kaspar Hauser was placed under official protection.

Education and unusual senses

News of the strange boy quickly spread. Educators, theologians, and other curious observers became interested in Kaspar Hauser. Because he could not speak properly, it was difficult to learn anything reliable about his childhood or birthplace. He was not able to communicate in the way most people could.

A religious philosopher named Georg then began teaching him reading, writing, and basic education. After Kaspar became able to communicate to some degree, people asked him how he had lived before his discovery. He reportedly explained that he had spent his life in a small room where no sunlight entered.

A sunless room suggested an extremely unusual environment: perhaps a prison, dungeon, or some other form of confinement. This only deepened public interest in him. Later, Kaspar Hauser was taken in and raised by the jurist Anselm Feuerbach.

Even under Feuerbach’s care, Kaspar was said to behave unlike an ordinary person at first. He reportedly vomited if he ate anything other than bread and water. He also disliked bright places, including sunlight, and preferred dark, narrow spaces.

To Feuerbach, these reactions seemed to support the idea that Kaspar had been forced to spend a long period in a place like an underground prison. This appeared to match Kaspar’s own account of his past.

Kaspar was also said to have unusually sharp senses. He was extremely sensitive to small sounds and could reportedly read books, including the Bible, even in very dark places. Stories about his strange abilities spread as well. For example, when handed a piece of metal, he was said to be able to identify what kind of metal it was just by touch. He was also said to be able to detect prey caught in a spider’s web.

These extraordinary senses were often described as one of the signs of Kaspar Hauser’s unusual nature, something that would not normally be seen in a person raised under ordinary conditions.

As Feuerbach raised and educated him, Kaspar gradually became more accustomed to a normal human life. At the same time, the strange sensitivities and heightened senses he had shown at first were said to fade.

Kaspar Hauser’s sudden death

Just as Kaspar Hauser was slowly regaining a more ordinary life, he was stabbed by a mysterious man on December 17, 1833.

By then, about five years had passed since his discovery and protection in 1828. He had finally begun to adjust to normal life and was reportedly just starting to speak about his past in his own words.

Because Kaspar had only recently become widely known in Nuremberg, many questions about his origin and early life remained unanswered when he died. The fact that he was attacked openly led to many theories about his identity. Even today, there is no settled answer to who Kaspar Hauser really was.

Rumors also spread about the attacker’s motive. Some whispered that the murder may have been intended to silence Kaspar before he could reveal something about his past. As with much of the Kaspar Hauser case, this remains speculation rather than proven fact.

What was the truth behind Kaspar Hauser?

Even during his lifetime, rumors circulated that Kaspar Hauser may have been a victim of a succession dispute involving the Grand Ducal House of Baden. Later researchers also tried to investigate this theory.

However, the family of the Grand Duke of Baden, which some considered the most realistic connection, reportedly refused to release the relevant records from that period. Because of this, the relationship between Kaspar Hauser and the House of Baden has never been clearly established.

In more recent years, genetic research was carried out on items said to have belonged to Kaspar Hauser. According to those results, no genetic link to the Grand Ducal House of Baden was found.

Another theory claimed that Kaspar may have been the child of Stéphanie de Beauharnais, the niece of Emperor Napoleon. This idea was based partly on details Kaspar himself had described and on circumstantial evidence that seemed to match his later life. However, no decisive proof was ever found.

At the very least, it appears that Kaspar Hauser spent his childhood in conditions resembling a dungeon, cut off from normal human life. But his true identity remains unknown.

His strange life has also inspired films, some of which have been highly praised as works of cinema.

For travelers interested in dark history, Nuremberg is a real city with many historic sites. If you visit places connected to this story, stay in public areas, follow local rules, and respect private property.
