Tarumizu Dam, located in Takadate-Kawakami, Natori City, Miyagi Prefecture, is associated with several local ghost stories and dark rumors.
According to the tales, countless hands can sometimes be seen rising from the surface of the reservoir. Another rumor says a headless rider appears in the area.
The stories also mention a suicide said to have taken place in the 1970s, when a university professor allegedly tied a rope to the railing of a bridge and hanged himself.
There is also a tragic account of a mother and child who were swept away by a muddy torrent during heavy rain and died. In another rumor, a body believed to be the victim of homicide was found near the dam, and the case is said to remain unsolved.
As with many haunted-location stories in Japan, these accounts are passed around as rumors and should be treated cautiously. If you visit the area, stay on public roads and designated spaces, avoid dangerous waterside areas, and do not trespass.
