Iimoriyama in Aizu-Wakamatsu, Fukushima, is best known as the hill where the Byakkotai, a unit of teenage soldiers from the Aizu Domain, died by group suicide during the Boshin War.
Because of that tragic history, the area is also surrounded by ghost stories. According to local rumors, people who go to Iimoriyama late at night may experience strange phenomena such as feeling someone watching them, hearing voices that sound like Buddhist chanting, or hearing countless footsteps nearby.
One especially disturbing story describes a figure with a blood-stained face and bloodshot eyes, clapping not with the palms of its hands, but with the backs of its hands. It is said that anyone who encounters these things may have an accident on the way home.
There are also rumors that ghostly photographs can be taken near the memorial monument or around the Tonokuchi Seki Cave, a waterway associated with the site.
Iimoriyama is a real historic and memorial location, so visitors should treat it with respect. If you go, stay on public paths, follow posted rules, and avoid unsafe late-night visits.
