Among Iwate Prefecture’s rumored haunted places, Green Hill Miwakemori Park in Mizusawa, Oshu City has a particularly uneasy reputation. It is a forest park whose name is read Miwakemori. The spot is not especially famous online, but among some locals it is known as a place with many disturbing stories attached to it.
The park is said to have been built on the site of an old execution ground, and a cemetery still borders the park today. Other local stories speak of suicides and violent incidents in and around the grounds, including a hanging inside the park, a charcoal-burning suicide in the parking lot, and a suicide at a nearby high school. As with many haunted-place legends, these accounts should be treated as local rumors unless independently confirmed.

If you visit, remember that this is a real public park and there are cemeteries and possibly closed or fenced-off areas nearby. Go only during permitted hours, stay in publicly accessible spaces, do not enter restricted structures, and avoid unsafe nighttime exploring.
Was It Built on an Execution Ground?
One of the strangest parts of Miwakemori Park is the origin story behind the name.
Do you know the legend of Matsura Sayo-hime? It is especially well known in Saga Prefecture, but because Sayo-hime is also said to be connected with the goddess Benzaiten, stories about her spread to many parts of Japan. In Oshu City, Iwate, she appears in a local tale known as the Kamondo Chōja legend.
The Miwakemori area sits on an alluvial fan, and Miwakemori, at about 113 meters above sea level, was once the only notable high ground nearby. According to one gentler explanation, Sayo-hime looked out from this hill and was able to recognize, or make out, the direction of her homeland. From that idea came the name Miwakemori, the forest of recognition.
But there is another, much darker explanation.
Some say the name originally referred to bodies being divided. According to this version, the forest once held an execution ground, and the name came from the dismemberment of those who were executed there.
Whether or not that story is historically accurate, the area does have a long past. Inside Miwakemori Park are remains associated with an early Heian-period burial mound, as well as several stone monuments from the Edo period. There is also a memorial tower for the unclaimed dead, and on the north side of the park, a cemetery stands directly beside the grounds. That cemetery contains a number of unidentified memorial stones.
For people who believe the execution-ground story, those stones only deepen the unease.
Incidents and Suicides Said to Be Connected to the Park
Among residents, several grim stories are told about Miwakemori Park and the area around it.
One story says that a sexual assault occurred in the park and that the victim later died by suicide. Another says that a charcoal-burning suicide took place in the south parking lot. There is also a tale of a girl at a nearby high school who, after being bullied, died by suicide in a clubroom. Yet another account says someone hanged themselves at the observation deck.
These are frightening stories, and what stands out is how often suicide appears in the local rumors. The repeated association with hangings may be one reason why tales of ghostly heads and severed heads have become attached to the park.
Execution. Divided bodies. Hangings. A disembodied head.
For horror fans, the connections feel almost too neat. For locals, that may be exactly why the place feels so hard to dismiss.
Haunted Areas Inside Green Hill Miwakemori Park
Green Hill Miwakemori Park is large and has several facilities. According to local ghost stories, paranormal phenomena are not limited to one corner. They are said to occur throughout the grounds.
There is an information board near the park entrance, so visitors who go in daylight can use it to understand the layout without wandering into unsafe or restricted areas.
The Observation Deck
The first haunted area often mentioned is the observation deck.
A female spirit is said to appear there. Some visitors claim that when they walk there at night, the air feels different, even when the temperature is not especially cold. Others describe sudden chills. The stairs are dim, marked with graffiti, and have an unsettling atmosphere even before any ghost story is added.
At night, a single red light can be seen at the top of the deck. At first it may startle you, but it is only a lamp. Still, its color recalls the old red lights of rural police boxes or volunteer fire stations, and in the darkness it can look disturbingly like a deep blood-red eye.
Climb the spiral stairs and the night view spreads out below. On a clear night, the sky can be filled with stars. It is one of Iwate’s notable forest parks, and the observation deck offers a beautiful view. Even so, at night it is often completely deserted. It is the kind of quiet place that even couples looking for a scenic night view may avoid.
According to reports from urban-exploration YouTubers, even when nothing is visible, footsteps that do not match their own can echo on the stairs. Knocking sounds are also said to come from different parts of the park. Some people claim to hear a woman’s voice from nowhere, or to see a female apparition near the deck.
Because of the rumor about a sexual assault in the park, some connect the female spirit to that story. Others believe the apparition may be tied to the hanging said to have occurred at the observation deck.
The Former Pool
Another haunted area is the site of the old pool. It was once used as a swimming pool, but it is no longer in operation.
Even when the pool was still active, several ghost stories were told about it. People spoke of one spot that felt strangely cold, as if a spirit were present there. Others told of a ghostly boy who pulled at swimmers’ legs, or of something watching from the drain.
On the way to the old pool, there is a white mesh fence, and some sections have been broken. It is unclear whether this was caused by animals, age, or people behaving badly. In some places the gaps are large enough to see the pool area, but visitors should not enter fenced or closed areas.
Even today, there are stories of a pale childlike spirit being seen near the abandoned pool.
The Phone Booth
The most feared haunted spot in Miwakemori Park is said to be the phone booth.
From the outside, it looks like an ordinary green public telephone booth. The pale light above it faintly shows the NTT mark. But now the booth appears neglected, with spiderwebs, insects, and little sign of use. There is no phone book, and the cleaning-date notice does not seem to have been updated.
The rumor is that a severed head appears inside this phone booth.
Execution. The darker interpretation of Miwakemori as a place of divided bodies. Hanging rumors. And then a disembodied head in a phone booth.
It is an unpleasant chain of associations, and it is easy to understand why the story has stayed with the park.
There are other rumors as well, including spirits standing near benches inside the grounds. In short, Miwakemori Park is treated by some locals as a haunted place where phenomena can happen almost anywhere.
A Haunted Park Hidden in Everyday Life

岩手県奥州市水沢見分森５５−１。。処刑場跡地に作られた？「見分森」の由来。。「松浦佐用姫」 を知っていますか？佐賀県ではとくに有名な伝説ですが、あの 「弁財天」 のモデルとなった女性であるため、佐用姫は日本各地に広まっています。岩手県奥州市にも 「掃部長者伝説」 というものがあり、ここに佐用姫が出てきます。見分森がある地域は扇状地で、海抜113mある見分森が、唯一の高所でした。佐用姫がここから故郷を 「見分けた」 ため、 「見分け森」 になったという言い伝えが残っているのですが……。
見分森の地名には、もう1つ恐ろしい説があります。それが、 「身分け」 です。この森にはかつて 処刑場 があり、処刑において手足や首がバラバラに分かれていくことから、 「身分け森」 と呼ばれるようになったというのです。。実際見分森公園には、平安時代初期の 古墳 が残っていたり、江戸時代の 石碑 がいくつか建っており、長い歴史をもった地域であることがうかがえます。園内には無縁仏をまつる 無縁塔 があります。また公園の北側には 墓地 が隣接しており、ここにも正体不明の 慰霊碑 が多く立っています。
処刑された人たちの首が埋められているのでしょうか……。見分森公園で起こった事件・自殺。。見分森公園では、様々な自殺や事件があったことが住民のあいだで語られています。園内でレイプ事件があり、その女性はのちに自殺した 南駐車場で練炭自殺があった 公園の近くにある高校でイジメを苦に部室で首つり自殺した少女がいる 展望台で首つり自殺者が出た 恐ろしい話ですね。こうして並べてみると、 自殺 が非常に多いです。そして自殺といえば 首つり です。園内には 生首 の霊が現れるといいます。

最初に紹介する公園内の心霊スポットは、 展望台 です。展望台には 女性の霊 が出るといいます。人によっては、夜に歩くと 空気が違う のがわかるでしょう。寒くもないのに身震いを起こすとか。階段などは薄暗く、スプレーの落書きだらけで不気味です。夜の展望台に行けば、てっぺんに 赤い目玉 が1つ光っているのが見えます。最初は驚くでしょうが、ランプです。昔の交番や田舎の消防団のランプを思い出すような色合いで、 濃厚な血の色 を想起させます。常夜灯か、はたまた飛行機避けかはわかりませんが、 なんとも不気味です。
。。らせん階段を登りきれば、眼下に夜景が広がります。晴れていれば、 満天の星明り が出迎えてくれます。県内でも有数の森林公園であり、夜景も綺麗な展望台ですが、夜は人っ子1人いません。静かな夜景に目ざといカップルたちも敬遠する……見分森公園は、そんな場所なのです。。廃墟探検ユーチューバーの報告によると、何も見えなくても、階段に 自分とは異なる足音 が反響したり、園内のそこかしこから ラップ音 が響いたりするそうです。また 女性の声 がどこからともなく聞こえる、 女性の霊 が現れるという展望台の心霊現象は、前述のレイプ事件と関わりがあるようにも思えますが、どちらかといえば 首つり自殺の霊 の可能性が高いと思われます。
その理由は、階段途中の細長い窓にあります。窓にかかった太い鉄枠の棒。これほど首つりに持ってこいの丈夫な横木はないでしょう 。首と鉄棒の両端をしっかりくくれば、あとは、窓から飛べばいいだけですから……。。画像引用元： ハイキングさ あべじゃ 。次に紹介するのは プール跡 です。かつてはプールとして利用されていましたが、今は使われていません。プールとして利用されていた頃から、様々な心霊現象が語られていました。。1か所だけ妙に冷たい箇所があり、そこに霊がいるとか、足を引っ張る男の子の霊がいる、排水溝からこちらをのぞいている、といった話が伝わっています。
。プール跡へ向かう途中には白い網目の柵があるのですが、いくつかが破られています。動物か、経年劣化か、それともお行儀の悪い人によるものでしょうか。場所によっては人が通れるくらいに開いているので、プールを見ることができるのです。プール跡では、今でも 白い 子どもの霊 の目撃情報があります。。最後に紹介するのは、 見分森公園の最恐心霊スポット と名高い 電話ボックス です。外観は、よくある緑色の公衆電話です。上部の白い電灯に、NTTのマークがぼんやりと浮かんでいます。
