Taihakusan Tunnel: Ghost Rumors in Sendai’s Taihaku Ward

Kinuyama Execution Ground Site: Ehime’s Haunted Matsuyama Prison Cemetery

English Version

Taihakusan Tunnel, located in Taihaku Ward, Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, is rumored to be haunted by several kinds of spirits: people said to have died after being struck by trains, someone said to have died by self-immolation, and even the ghost of a child.

According to local stories, before the Akiu Railway was abolished in 1961, fatal accidents were said to have occurred repeatedly inside the tunnel. There is also a rumor that a self-immolation suicide once took place there, though details remain uncertain.

Today, the area is associated with the Tohoku Expressway. If visiting nearby, treat it as an active traffic zone and observe all posted rules. Do not enter restricted areas, tunnels, railway remains, or expressway property.
