Kagoshima’s Sakurajima, Mount Aso in Kumamoto, Mount Ontake, which caused major damage, and Mount Moto-Shirane are all among the volcanoes being monitored. For those of us living in a volcanic country, the word eruption may not be shocking by itself. Most people have probably seen footage of black smoke billowing from a mountaintop.
But if you shift your perspective a little, the eruption we usually imagine is actually on the smaller side. There are volcanoes and eruptions on a scale that is almost impossible to picture.
And in Japan, there is even a village located inside one of the world’s rare double calderas.
Aogashima: A Village Inside a Double Caldera
One of our articles focuses on a remote island that feels mystical, beautiful, and, when you really think about it, a little frightening: Aogashima Village in Tokyo.
Although it is administratively part of Tokyo, Aogashima is more than 350 kilometers from central Tokyo and about 70 kilometers from the nearest island, Hachijojima.
This lonely island in the middle of the Pacific is actually the exposed summit of a volcano rising more than 1,000 meters from the seafloor. In other words, it is essentially the top of a volcano, and the people there live as if inside its crater.
Aogashima has a very rare landform known as a double caldera. Places where a village has been built and people live inside a double caldera are extremely uncommon worldwide.
The island is surrounded by sheer cliffs. Ferry service is often limited by weather and sea conditions, and the helicopter has only nine seats. It is not an easy place to reach, and once the sea becomes rough, landing on the island or returning from it can become difficult. Even so, Aogashima has recently been attracting attention from around the world.
If you plan to visit remote volcanic islands in Japan, check official transportation updates, weather, and local guidance before traveling. Do not attempt unsafe landings, cliff access, or restricted routes.
Ontong Java Plateau: A Trace of One of Earth’s Largest Eruptions
Another article looked at the Ontong Java Plateau, said to be one of the largest traces of volcanic activity on Earth, now lying beneath the Pacific Ocean.
The word plateau may sound unfamiliar in this context. An oceanic plateau is a trace left on the seafloor by eruptions from submarine volcanoes. The Ontong Java Plateau, submerged in the Pacific, is often described as one of the largest eruption traces in the world.
It is thought to have been formed by an enormous eruption related to a super plume, also known as a mantle plume. Today, it is said that about 50 percent of that ancient volcanic trace has already sunk into the mantle.
It is a scale of eruption far beyond ordinary imagination.
Yellowstone and the Fear of a Caldera Eruption

But in Earth’s past, craters have appeared suddenly in places where there seemed to be nothing, followed by unbelievably massive eruptions.
A super plume is a terrifying phenomenon in which magma rises from deep inside the Earth on an enormous scale. In 2015, after a magnitude 8-class earthquake occurred off the Ogasawara Islands with a very deep hypocenter, some internet message boards speculated that it might be a sign of a super plume.
That was only online speculation, not confirmed scientific fact. Still, the idea shows how unsettling these deep-Earth phenomena can feel.

太平洋のど真ん中にぽつんとあるこの島は、海底からの比高が1000メートル以上の火山の山頂部分が海面から顔を出しているといもの。つまり、火山のてっぺんなんで、その火山の火口に住んでいるようなもの…。二重カルデラと呼ばれるとても珍しい地形で、世界的にも二重カルデラの中に村が作られて人が住んでいるという場所はかなりレアです。断崖絶壁に囲まれていて、フェリーの就航率も低く、ヘリコプターの座席はわずか9席・・・。なかなか行けないし、一度海が荒れると帰ることも上陸することも難しいこの島が、実は今、世界から注目を集めています。
