One of Fukuoka Prefecture’s better-known haunted places is the site called Kikuhime’s Head Mound, located in Kurahisa, Miyawaka City. Among local ghost-spot enthusiasts, it is known for stories of unsettling phenomena, including alleged spirit photos and reports of people feeling that something followed them home or experiencing misfortune after visiting.
As the name suggests, many of the rumors connected to Kikuhime’s Head Mound involve sightings of a female ghost. These accounts are treated as local legend rather than verified fact, but they have helped make the site one of Fukuoka’s more talked-about haunted locations.
The Legend of Kikuhime
According to the legend, a tragic incident took place here, and the mound was built to pray for the repose of Kikuhime, who lost her life in a violent way.
One story says that on the night of March 23, the date Kikuhime is said to have been killed, her headless body wanders in search of its missing head. Then, the following year, the story reverses: Kikuhime’s disembodied head is said to appear, searching for its lost body.
Because of this gruesome legend, some people believe Kikuhime’s lingering resentment still surrounds the mound. That belief is often given as the reason why ghostly sightings and other strange experiences continue to be reported there.
If you choose to look for this location while traveling in Fukuoka, go respectfully and use common sense. Do not trespass, enter private property, disturb memorial sites, or visit in a way that could put you or local residents at risk.
