The Rumor: Do Not Wear Red
Various ghost stories are told about Ushikubi Dam. Among local rumors, one of the most famous is that you should not wear red clothing there.
People have claimed the following experiences:
- While touring by motorcycle, a white, mist-like human figure appeared from the dam.
- A ghostly couple was seen sitting on a bench.
- The sound of bells could be heard from nowhere.
- A person felt something like a spider web sticking to their face, sometimes described as “spirit thread.”
- Someone wearing red was allegedly spoken to by a ghost.
- Someone wearing red was allegedly cut by a spirit.
These are rumors and ghost stories, not verified events. Still, the idea of being harmed simply for wearing a certain color has helped make Ushikubi Dam one of Fukuoka’s more disturbing haunted locations.
The dam is located around 481 Ushikubi, Onojo City, Fukuoka Prefecture.
Where Did the Name “Ushikubi” Come From?
The name “Ushikubi” can sound eerie because it can be interpreted as “cow neck.” Some say there is a legend that the dam was built after offering a cow’s head as a sacrifice, but the origin of the place name is not clear.
According to information associated with the Ushikubi Community Center, several theories exist:
- One theory says that, according to the historical text Chikuzen no Kuni Zoku Fudoki, a mountain west of Hirano Shrine looked like a cow stretching out its neck, so the area came to be called “Ushikubi.”
- Another theory says that in the Jomon period, the area around present-day Ushikubi was near the coastline. The word for an inlet or bay may have been connected to the name.
- A third theory says immigrants from Korea’s Soshimori Mountain brought the name “Gozu” from their homeland, and that it later changed into “Ushikubi.”
Because there are multiple explanations, the true origin remains uncertain.
Suicides, Accidents, and Deaths Connected to Ushikubi Dam
Ushikubi Dam is not only known for ghost stories. It has also been rumored as a place where bodies are recovered from the water, and it is still described by some as a suicide spot.
Dams in Japan often become haunted locations in local folklore because fatal accidents sometimes occur during construction. In the case of Ushikubi Dam, available records do not appear to show a fatal accident during construction.
However, deaths and serious incidents have occurred in the area in later years:
- In 1998, a power shovel near the Ushikubi Dam construction office reportedly fell and struck an 11-year-old elementary school boy, killing him instantly.
- In 2008, a truck caught fire on a road near Ushikubi Dam. After the vehicle burned out, a charred body of unknown sex was found inside.
- In 2017, four bodies were discovered near the dam at Onojo Ikoi no Mori Mizube Park. This case is discussed below.

The Dam as a “Suicide Spot” and Rumors of Bodies
By day, Ushikubi Dam is a sightseeing and recreation area. At night, according to local ghost-story culture, it reveals another face.
The area is said to have very little street lighting. That darkness makes the night view beautiful, but it also contributes to the sense of danger and isolation. Locals say bodies have been pulled from the dam, which is part of why it is called a suicide spot. The presence of suicide-prevention signs suggests that authorities have treated the issue seriously.
There is also a strange rumor about those signs. They reportedly display hotline phone numbers meant to prevent suicide, but people say the hotlines sometimes receive calls from spirits, including many silent calls.
The rumor that people wearing red are cut by spirits is sometimes explained as the work of a person who died there and remained attached to the color red, or who tries to drag people wearing similar clothing into the same fate. This is only folklore, but it adds to the dam’s grim atmosphere.

The 2017 Case at Onojo Ikoi no Mori Mizube Park
In 2017, four bodies were found at Onojo Ikoi no Mori Mizube Park, located near Ushikubi Dam.
At around 7:45 a.m. on July 23, 2017, the bodies of an adult man, a girl, and a boy were discovered inside a car parked in the lot. At first, the case was suspected to be a family murder-suicide or family suicide.
Later, the body of an adult woman was found in a nearby wooded area, raising the possibility of a murder case.
According to the Kasuga Police Station of the Fukuoka Prefectural Police, the four were believed to be family members. A person living with them had reportedly contacted authorities to say that the four had left home and disappeared.
The full truth of the case was not publicly clarified in the original reporting. Whether it was a family suicide, a murder case, or something else remains unclear.
Do Modern Devices Malfunction Near Onojo Ikoi no Mori?
One detail that makes the area feel even more unsettling is the claim that modern equipment behaves strangely there.
Onojo Ikoi no Mori, where the four bodies were found in 2017, has also been treated by some as a haunted place. Security sensors were reportedly installed there to prevent vandalism and other problems.
However, according to the story, the facility managers eventually turned off the sensors because they malfunctioned too often.
Some equipment problems can be explained by age and deterioration. But in this case, the sensors were said to react so frequently that people felt it was beyond ordinary malfunction.
Could it have been connected to the spiritual rumors around Ushikubi Dam? There is no evidence for that, but the thought is chilling. Some have wondered whether, if the sensors had been working normally, the 2017 incident might have been prevented.

牛頸ダムの場所はになります。。福岡県大野城市牛頸（大字）４８１。牛頸ダムの名前の由来は？。。そんな心霊スポットとして有名な牛頸ダムですが、まず 名前 からして不気味ですよね。牛の首をいけにえ にささげて 作られた……そんな言い伝えが残っているとも言われていますが、牛頸公民館の公式ホームページを見てみると。・『筑前国続風土記』によると、平野神社の西にある古野山の形が、牛が首を伸ばした形に見えたことから「牛首」と呼ばれた。。・縄文時代、現在の牛頸付近は海岸線になっていた。

殺人？】。。2017年には、牛頸ダム近くの「大野城いこいの森水辺公園」で 4人の変死体 が発見される事件が起こりました。2017年7月23日、午前7時45分ごろ、駐車場に止まっていた車内から 成人男性と女児、男児の3人の死体 が見つかりました。そのため一家心中事件ではないかと見られたのですが、その後付近の林から 成人女性の死体 が発見され、殺人事件の可能性が浮上。福岡県警春日署によると4人は家族とみられ、同居人から「（4人が）家を出て、いなくなった」と通報があったようです。
