Do you believe in spiritual sensitivity—the kind of “sixth sense” that science cannot easily explain?

The man in this story did not. At least, not until one strange night about 15 years ago, when something happened on a road in Kagoshima and followed him all the way home.

A Late-Night Drive in Kagoshima

The narrator was 45 years old, working as a temporary employee, living an ordinary life with his wife and two children.

At the time, he lived in Kagoshima and often finished work around 10 p.m. One night, after another late shift, he was driving home alone in his own car.

Suddenly, while he was behind the wheel, he felt as if a powerful force were pulling him.

His arms began to turn the steering wheel to the left—against his own will.

There were no oncoming cars, and when the vehicle drifted left, he slammed on the brakes in a panic. Fortunately, nothing serious happened.

He still remembers the pounding of his heart: thud, thud, thud.

Maybe I’m just tired, he thought.

Then he drove home.

The Woman in the Living Room

After arriving home, he sat down in the living room and was about to tell his wife what had happened.

That was when he saw her.

In front of him, viewed from behind, sat a woman—or perhaps a young girl—with a short black bob haircut. She was wearing a black T-shirt. Because her back was turned, he could not see her face.

A guest at this hour? No, that can’t be right.

When he had just come in, no one had been in the living room. But the moment he sat down and lifted his face, the figure was there.

He looked around the room and saw his wife staring at him.

All he could manage to say was, “She’s there. Can you see her?”

His wife nodded, but said nothing.

He no longer remembers how much time passed. At some point, the bob-haired figure seen from behind simply disappeared.

Then the words came pouring out of him.

“I saw her. I saw her too—the one with the black bob…”

His wife replied, “Yes. You brought her home.”

“Me?”

He told her about the drive: the sudden feeling of being pulled by a strong force, and how his arms had turned the steering wheel left without his intention.

His wife listened, then explained her view.

“You’ve been working late lately, haven’t you? You were tired. When that happens, your thoughts and your field of vision get narrow.”

He asked what she meant.

“When you’re in that state, you tend to think negatively. Your energy—or something like it—matches with something in the same condition. And you bring it with you.”

He asked if that something was a spirit.

She said yes, but told him not to worry. According to her, it was not the kind of spirit that would harm him.

“Take a bath tonight, get clean, and rest properly,” she told him.

He agreed.

His Wife Had Always Seen Them

His wife had strong spiritual sensitivity. Since childhood, she had often seen things that other people could not.

After they married, she had told him such stories many times. But honestly, he had never believed them.

Looking back, he wondered if the spirit with the black bob had done nothing—or had been unable to do anything—because his wife’s spiritual sensitivity was stronger. Perhaps, because he was exhausted, her sensitivity somehow affected him too, allowing him to see it.

Before or since, that was the only time he ever saw a spirit with his own eyes.

What exactly was the figure he saw?

What Followed Him Home?

For a while afterward, he and his wife kept talking about the woman seen from behind.

According to his wife, his energy had weakened from fatigue, making it easier for a spirit with a similar nature to attach itself to him.

Then what about the steering wheel suddenly turning left?

His wife said that some spirits are mischievous. But to him, forcing a car off course was far beyond a prank.

He later thought: maybe it happened because he had been driving alone.

If his wife had been in the passenger seat, he believed the spirit would not have been able to do such a thing. In her view, spirits and spiritual sensitivity have something like ranks. If a person’s sensitivity is stronger than that of a mischievous spirit, the spirit cannot—or will not—cause harm.

In the end, he came to think that what he had encountered was something like an earthbound spirit.

After that incident, he tried to give up negative thinking. He also became more careful about keeping his body clean. According to his wife, cleanliness helps keep negative forces from clinging to a person.

A Kimono-Clad Woman Near Sekigahara?

There was one more strange episode.

Later, he had a business trip to Gifu. When he returned home, his wife said to him, “Did you bring back a woman in a kimono this time?”

He wondered if it might have been because he had passed near Sekigahara, a place strongly associated with Japan’s historic battlefield. Since the trip had taken him through unfamiliar places and left him tired, perhaps he had again matched the wavelength of some wandering spirit.

This time, however, he could not see it.

Closing Thoughts

Whether one calls it spiritual sensitivity, fatigue, coincidence, or something else, the narrator says this experience changed how he thought about the unseen.

If you feel unusually heavy, unwell, or mentally worn down while traveling, take care of the practical side first: rest, eat, hydrate, and avoid driving when exhausted. If you are concerned in a spiritual sense, some people in Japan may choose to consult a shrine, temple, or spiritual practitioner.

And perhaps most importantly: keep yourself clean, try not to sink too deeply into negative thoughts, and be careful not to obsess. According to this story, worrying too much may be one way of inviting something closer.
