Adolf Hitler, one of history’s most infamous dictators and one of the ultimate villains of the modern age, is generally said to have died by suicide in Berlin on April 30, 1945, as Soviet forces advanced on the city.
Even so, rumors that Hitler survived have never completely disappeared.
For decades, the theory was treated like other dubious “survival legends”—Elvis is still alive, or the Japanese warlord Yoshitsune became Genghis Khan. But in 2017, a newly released set of US government documents gave the rumor fresh life. According to believers in the theory, those files contained material suggesting that the CIA had once received information about Hitler possibly being alive after the war.
The Missing Body
At the center of the Hitler survival theory is one persistent claim: the body.
Because Hitler is said to have killed himself while Berlin was collapsing under the Soviet advance, the circumstances were chaotic. There was no ordinary funeral, no public burial, and no calm transfer of remains. Supporters of the survival theory argue that the Soviet military would have searched desperately for proof that Hitler was dead.
And yet, in the version of the story told by believers, no unmistakable body was ever presented—“not even a single hair,” as the rumor often puts it.
That uncertainty became the seed of the legend.
Why Some People Believed He Could Have Escaped
Hitler’s crimes and the terror he unleashed across Europe are beyond dispute. At the same time, the survival theory often focuses on his obsessive will, cunning, and ability to manipulate events around him.
Would a man so fanatical and calculating really have chosen a clean, final suicide?
For believers, the answer is no. They argue that someone as tenacious and strategic as Hitler would have prepared an escape route. That feeling—more than hard evidence—has long been one of the strongest emotional foundations of the survival theory.
U-Boats and the South America Rumor
Another major element is the German U-boat.
During World War II, these advanced submarines turned the Atlantic into a terrifying battlefield. In postwar survival theories, they also became the perfect vehicle for escape.
After the war, Allied forces hunted Nazi war criminals across Europe. Border controls were strict, especially for anyone suspected of ties to the Nazi regime. But a submarine, the theory argues, could slip through even the tightest net.
From there, the rumored destination was often South America.
At the time, parts of South America were home to authoritarian governments or strongly anti-communist regimes, and the continent was far from Europe. In the legend, this made it a plausible hiding place for fugitives from the collapsed Third Reich.
The 2017 Declassification
For years, the idea remained a shadowy urban legend.
Then came a wave of US document releases. In the United States, classified materials can be declassified after a certain period if officials determine that keeping them secret is no longer necessary for national security. In the late 2010s, documents from the years after World War II continued to emerge.
On October 26, 2017, under President Donald Trump, CIA files related to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy were released. Critics mocked the move as political theater. But among the documents was a file that caught the attention of conspiracy researchers and history buffs.
The document appeared to show that the CIA had received information claiming Hitler was alive after the war. It also included a snapshot said to show Hitler standing beside a man named Philip Citroen, described in the story as a former member of the Nazi SS.
To supporters of the survival theory, this was explosive. It did not prove the story beyond doubt, but it gave the old rumor a new and unsettling source: an American intelligence file.
The Ghost of Hitler
Even if Hitler had somehow survived the end of the war, he would almost certainly be dead by now.
But the horror of the rumor is not only about whether one man escaped. It is about the lingering phantom of Hitler himself—a symbol of terror that still haunts Europe and the modern world.
If people came to believe that this phantom had not been a phantom at all, the psychological shock would be impossible to predict.

そう、二次大戦世界中で行われた戦犯刈り。とくに、ヨーロッパでのナチ刈りに関しては過酷かつ熾烈で、まさに蟻の這い出る隙間もないほど、特に国境線に関しては厳重な警戒が敷かれていました。しかし、Uボートならその蟻の這い出る隙間もない包囲網から文字道理這い出すことができるのです。潜伏先は南米か？。当時、共産国や独裁国家の多かった南米。ヨーロッパからの距離も十分にあることから、逃亡し潜伏した先は南米であるとされていました。米公文書が確定したヒトラー生存説。
。そんな、眉唾の都市伝説だったヒトラー生存説。ところがアメリカの機密解除によってその様相は一変してきます。アメリカの機密文書公開とは。アメリカでは、それが国家機密において現状も有効であるとされない以上、一定期間で機密は解除されます。そう、つまり、今もまだ秘密にしておかない国益を損ねるものではないかぎり、一定期間を経た機密文書は公開されるのです。そして、2010年代後半、二次大戦直後のそれが次々公開されているのです。2017年トランプ政権下ででてきた事実。
2017年10月26日。トランプ大統領がその人気取りの一環と揶揄されてまで行ったJFK暗殺事件に関するCIAの機密文章公開。しかし、そこにはとんでもない資料が紛れていました。それが 「CIAはヒトラーの生存を認識していた」と理解するに十分な資料 だったのです。しかもその資料には、ヒトラーがナチスの親衛隊の隊員であったとされるフィリップ・シトロエンなる人物と並んで収まっているスナップ写真までが添付されていたのです。これにより、 ヒトラーが戦後を生き延びていた可能性はぐんと強まった のです。
