English Version
Like Japan, countries overseas have their own urban legends. There is “This Man,” the mysterious figure said to appear in people’s dreams; Mothman, who in some tellings is said to shatter the minds of those who see him; and the Men in Black, made famous in Japan through the movie series.
This time, let’s look at one of the most cultishly popular urban legends of the internet age: Slender Man.
What Is Slender Man?
Slender Man is an urban legend that spread across the internet overseas. Because there is no single central story, many different traits have been attached to the legend over time.
In general, Slender Man is described as a tall, thin figure with an unnervingly long body, tentacle-like arms, and a blank, featureless head. He is often reported near forests, or in places connected to forests.
He is said to abduct and kill children, though his purpose is unclear. Some versions claim he can teleport. Others say that being near him can cause an illness known as “Slender Man sickness.”
In 2009, photos and supposed eyewitness accounts of Slender Man were posted on the Something Awful forums, and the legend spread rapidly from there. One caption read:
> “We didn’t want to go, we didn’t want to kill them, but its persistent silence and outstretched arms horrified and comforted us at the same time… > > 1983, photographer unknown, presumed dead.”
Another caption described a recovered photograph connected to missing children:
> “One of two recovered photographs from the Stirling City Library blaze. Notable for being taken the day which fourteen children vanished and for what is referred to as ‘The Slender Man.’ Deformities cited as film defects by officials. Fire at library occurred one week later. Actual photograph confiscated as evidence. > > 1986, photographer: Mary Thomas, missing since June 13th, 1986.”
From these posts, Slender Man became a meme, and many more alleged sightings began appearing online.
Slender Man-Like Legends Around the World
Although Slender Man himself is a relatively recent discovery, there are legends, images, and ruins around the world that some people have compared to him.
For example, cave paintings in Serra da Capivara National Park in northeastern Brazil are said to show a long, thin humanoid monster leading children. The details are unclear, but the figure’s connection to children and its long, tentacle-like arms are often noted as similarities.
If this were interpreted as Slender Man, it would mean sightings of him go back as far as around 9000 BCE.
In ancient Egypt, some people have also pointed to hieroglyphs in pharaohs’ tombs that resemble Slender Man. In Germany, around the mid-16th century, the woodcut artist Hans Freckenberg is said to have created images that some compare to Slender Man.
Freckenberg was known for anatomically accurate drawings, but in two works rumored to depict Slender Man, unnatural extra limbs appear to have been added. These images are said to relate to a German legend called Der Großmann. According to the tale, Der Großmann is a fairy-like being that lives in the forest and relentlessly chases naughty children who enter the woods.
With its multiple limbs and its habit of pursuing children, Der Großmann has clear similarities to the Slender Man legend.
Romanian folklore also has an old fairy tale featuring a being sometimes called the Tall Man. Like Slender Man, he is described as thin, tall, dressed in black, and having many arms.
In this way, monsters resembling Slender Man can be found in stories from various parts of the world. No confirmed sightings have been reported in Japan, but given the nature of the legend—where people who see him may not return alive—some might wonder if he has already arrived.
If you visit forests or old locations connected to legends, treat these stories as folklore and fiction, respect local rules, and do not trespass or enter unsafe areas.
Fiction? The “Fakelore” Behind Slender Man
In truth, Slender Man is a fictional urban legend born on the internet.
It began in 2009 on the Something Awful forums in a thread called “create paranormal images through Photoshop.” A user posted edited images, and from there, more and more details were added to the story.
False traditions that spread online in this way are sometimes called “fakelore.” Slender Man is one of the most famous examples.
Slender Man has even been copyrighted, and Eric Knudsen, who first posted the character under the name “Victor Surge,” has publicly stated that he created him.
Because the legend began with only a few images and short captions, later versions of the story are not very consistent. Instead, Slender Man became a vague collection of fears: some kind of unimaginably terrifying monster, never fully explained.
That vagueness may be one reason the legend spread so widely. Fear of the unknown is powerful, and when people are told only that something is terrifying, their own minds fill in the most frightening details.
For that reason, Slender Man has also been discussed as a rare chance to observe the formation of myth in real time. Born from the internet and from human fear, he may be one of the defining urban legends of the modern age.
Slender Man in the Real World
As an internet-born urban legend, Slender Man eventually began to influence the real world.
Some of that influence appeared through fan works, games, and movies. Slender Man has appeared in many games, and there are roughly ten titles where he plays a central role. These works helped fuel the Slender Man boom.
In film, one well-known example is the 2018 movie Slender Man, released digitally in Japan under the title Slender Man: If You See Him, It’s Over.
However, the legend also became connected to a tragic real-life case.
In 2014, in the US state of Wisconsin, an incident known as the Slender Man stabbing occurred. Two girls, reportedly influenced by the Slender Man story, lured a friend into the woods and stabbed her 19 times in what was described as a ritual to show loyalty to Slender Man.
Fortunately, the victim survived. Even so, the case sparked major debate about the influence of the internet on children.
Final Thoughts
Slender Man began as a single internet post, then spread around the world, gathering sightings, stories, and fear as it went.
That is part of what makes him so unsettling. A fictional image became a shared nightmare, then a global urban legend.
Perhaps a scary story you create could also become “real” once it is released onto the internet.

「 We didn’t want to go, we didn’t want to kill them, but its persistent silence and outstretched arms horrified and comforted us at the same time… 。
1983, photographer unknown, presumed dead. 。 。「 One of two recovered photographs from the Stirling City Library blaze. Notable for being taken the day which fourteen children vanished and for what is referred to as “The Slender Man”. Deformities cited as film defects by officials. Fire at library occurred one week later. Actual photograph confiscated as evidence. 。
1986, photographer: Mary Thomas, missing since June 13th, 1986. 。
