This time, we’re looking at one of the world’s strangest historical mysteries: the Antikythera Mechanism. It is also called the Antikythera gears or the Antikythera device. The name is very literal: it was found in a shipwreck near the Greek island of Antikythera.
It is one of the most famous so-called OOPArts, short for “Out Of Place Artifacts.” In paranormal and occult circles, the term usually means an object that seems too advanced, too strange, or too “out of place” for the time period in which it was found.
Many famous OOPArts have lost their mystery as science advanced. The crystal skulls associated with Maya legends, the dinosaur-covered Cabrera stones, the so-called golden “space shuttle,” and the vitrified city of Mohenjo-daro have all been challenged or explained as later creations, misinterpretations, or exaggerations through modern research methods.
But the Antikythera Mechanism is different. Instead of being exposed as a fake, it has become even more astonishing under scientific investigation. So is the Antikythera Mechanism a genuine OOPArt? What Is the Antikythera Mechanism?
The Antikythera Mechanism was discovered in 1901 in a Greek shipwreck. It is believed to be roughly 2,100 years old. When it was found, it was heavily corroded, broken, and incomplete. At first, no one could clearly explain how it was used or what it was made for.
Beginning in 2005, the Antikythera Mechanism Research Project applied modern imaging, scanning, and reconstruction techniques to the object. Researchers worked to understand its missing parts, damaged sections, inscriptions, and original structure.
The conclusion was extraordinary: the device appears to have been an analog astronomical calculator, or something close to an ancient mechanical model of the heavens.

Derek de Solla Price, a physicist and historian of scientific instruments associated with Cambridge University, studied the mechanism and helped bring serious attention to it. He and later researchers showed that the device used a level of gear-based technology that many people once associated with much later eras.
In popular discussions, the mechanism is often compared to technologies thought to have appeared centuries later, including advanced gear forms and mechanisms reminiscent of early modern clockwork.
That is why it has been described as technology “not inferior to an 18th-century clock.” If that comparison is taken seriously, it suggests that ancient Greek knowledge of mathematics, astronomy, and precision engineering was far more advanced than many people once believed.
Why Did This Technology Disappear?
One of the biggest mysteries is not only how the Antikythera Mechanism was made, but why similar machines did not become common afterward.
A common romantic theory is that, after the ancient world, changing religious and social climates made certain forms of scientific investigation more difficult. In occult circles, ancient astronomy is often linked to the Sumerians, one of the world’s earliest urban civilizations. Some writers claim that Sumerian astronomical knowledge was so advanced that it rivaled modern understanding. They also claim that the Sumerians recorded planets such as Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto long before their modern discoveries, and that they could predict planetary movements with high accuracy.
These claims are not accepted as established history by mainstream scholars, but they remain popular in ancient-mystery and ancient-astronaut theories.
According to some interpretations of Sumerian myth, humanity was created by a group of gods known as the Anunnaki, said to have descended from the heavens. In modern ancient-astronaut theories, these “gods” are reimagined as extraterrestrial beings. Some versions of the theory claim they came to Earth to mine gold and gave humanity civilization, language, medicine, and astronomical knowledge.
From that perspective, the Antikythera Mechanism becomes part of a larger paranormal question: could its knowledge have come from somewhere beyond Earth?
There is no scientific proof that aliens were involved. But as a legend and occult theory, the idea continues to fuel the machine’s eerie reputation.
A Genuine OOPArt?
If an OOPArt means an object that seems out of place for the age and setting in which it was found, then the Antikythera Mechanism fits the description better than almost any other famous example.
Unlike many so-called OOPArts, it is not a modern fake. It is a real ancient artifact. Its complexity, craftsmanship, and astronomical purpose have been confirmed through research.
Michael Edmunds of Cardiff University once described the Antikythera Mechanism as being more valuable than the Mona Lisa. As quoted in The Guardian, he praised it as an extraordinary object: beautifully designed, astronomically accurate, historically unique, and almost impossible to compare with anything else.
If more missing parts are found, or if a similar ancient machine is ever discovered, the story could change again.
For now, the Antikythera Mechanism remains one of history’s most fascinating machines: not proof of aliens or a lost super-civilization, but a real ancient device so advanced that it still feels like it should not exist.

当然、地動説に基づいて作られていて、太陽・月・惑星の動きを1/37000000の誤差の精度正確に計測できたとされています。。これだけでも当時あったとは思えませんよね。しかしこの機械の機能は、これだけじゃありません。時代にそぐわない高度な機能。。なんと……。日 食 や 月食 が起こる時期をこの機械1つで予測できた 歯車の形で 月の満ち欠け を表示することができた うるう年 まで考慮できるほど、精密に計測されていた 現代でも認知されていない 16種の天体 の予測装置がついている このようなものまで解明、あるいは可能性があったと推測されているんです。
こんな機械が 2000年以上 前 に存在していて、実際に使われていた んです。この事実に、ロマンを感じずにはいられませんよね。オリンピック開催を知らせる機械だった説。。アンティキティラ島の機械には、 「OLIMPIA」 の文字が刻まれている ことが判明しています。つまり 4年に1度のうるう年 を計測することで、 オリンピックの開催時期 を知らせていたという可能性です。当時のオリンピックが、これほど精巧な機械を用いるほどに重要なイベントだったことも、この機械から察することができますよね。

「18世紀の時計にも劣らない技術」 と言われています。古代ギリシア人の知識・技術・科学力は、18世紀のヨーロッパに匹敵するレベルだったということです。。なぜオーパーツ化したのか？。。紀元後から、 キリスト教 をはじめとした 「宗教」の時代 がやってきます。宗教の広がりに伴い、科学は 異端 のものとされてしまいました 。科学技術の発展はおろか、それが表に出ることすら難しくなってしまったのです。そこで考えてしまうのが……。もし、科学が異端とされていなかったら？

シュメール人は 18世紀以降に発見された天王星や海王星、冥王星などの 太陽系の全惑星 を粘土板に記し、しかも 正確な運行予測 も可能だった とされています。こういった超技術から、古代には現代を超える文明が存在したという 「超古代文明説」 や、宇宙人が人類の文明を作ったという 「古代宇宙飛行士説」 などが盛り上がりました。というのも シュメール神話 によれば、 シュメール人（ヒト）は、 「アヌンナキ」 という宇宙から降臨した神々の集団に作られた とされます。
その文明や知恵も、このアヌンアキに授けられたというのです。アヌンアキは、 金を採掘するために他の星から地球へとやってき たとされました。当時は 「神」 だとされたアヌンアキですが、現代の目線で見たら、どう見ても 「宇宙人」 ですよね。実際にそう考えなくては、 なぜ近代にも相当する超高度な都市構造や言語、医療技術、天文知識などが突然現れたのか…… この謎は現在の科学では説明できません。「アンティキティラ島の機械」も、宇宙人に授けられた技術から作られたものなのかもしれません 。
アンティキティラ島の機械はガチのオーパーツ。。オーパーツの定義は、「それが発見された時代や場所にそぐわない物品」です。。そしてアンティキティラ島の機械は、これに当てはまる 本物のオーパーツ です。カーディフ大学のマイケル・エドマンド教授は、アンティキティラ島の機械を 「モナ・リザより価値がある」 と評しています。「この装置は、この種の物としては抜きん出ている。デザインは美しく、天文学から見ても非常に正確に作られている。歴史的、また希少価値から見て、私はこの機械は モナ・リザよりも価値がある と言わざるを得ない。
