In Yamamiya, Fujinomiya City, Shizuoka Prefecture, there is a cave known as Banbaa-ana. Although it is often described as a cave, it is not the kind of place that stretches horizontally into the earth. Instead, the opening drops almost vertically.
It is easy to imagine how difficult, if not impossible, it would be to climb back out after falling in. Because of that very real danger, fencing has reportedly been installed around the area to help prevent accidents.
But the fear surrounding Banbaa-ana is not only about the physical risk of the pit.
The Legend of the Old Women
According to local rumor, the name of Banbaa-ana is tied to a grim legend: it was once a hole where elderly women were abandoned.
In older times, when famine struck and there was not enough food for an entire village, some communities were said to have practiced kuchiberashi—reducing the number of mouths to feed. In the stories told about this Shizuoka haunted spot, many old women were supposedly left at Banbaa-ana for that reason.
Because of this legend, visitors have claimed that the area is associated with strange phenomena, including eerie groaning sounds and unsettling spirit photographs. Some say the abandoned women, unable to rest in peace, may still hold resentment toward the living who come near the pit.
As with many haunted locations in Japan, these stories should be treated as folklore and local rumor rather than confirmed history. Still, the atmosphere around a fenced-off vertical pit is enough to make the legend feel uncomfortably vivid.
Access and Safety Notes
Information about reaching Banbaa-ana is said to be difficult to follow, and older reports suggest that the location can be hard to identify without someone who knows the local roads well.
Those reports describe an approach from Shizuoka Prefectural Route 72, traveling from the Obuchi area toward Fujinomiya. After passing the Museum of Curious Stones, there is said to be an intersection near a sign for a poultry farm. From there, the route continues toward the area near Fuji Asahide Gakuen, where a small road branches away from the prefectural road.
Further along, a transmission tower reportedly becomes visible. After reaching a fork and turning right, the road becomes unpaved and leads into a wooded area. Older accounts suggest that this is likely as far as a car can go. From there, the route continues on foot, eventually reaching a red stone; turning left from that marker is said to lead toward Banbaa-ana.
This is not a recommended night visit. The area has little to no lighting, includes unpaved paths, and contains a dangerous vertical opening. Do not climb fences, enter restricted or private land, or approach the pit itself. If you choose to visit the general area, check current access conditions, go only in daylight, and prioritize safety over curiosity.
Banbaa-ana remains one of Shizuoka Prefecture’s better-known haunted spots, feared not only for its legends of abandonment and lingering resentment, but also for the very real danger of the place itself.

静岡県富士宮市山宮の心霊スポットとして、「婆々穴」と称される洞窟があります。この書き方で「バンバア穴」と読むそうです。静岡県有数の心霊スポットである洞窟。この静岡の洞窟は、横方向に伸びているような構造にはなっていません。洞窟と言いながら、穴は垂直に伸びていいるのです。落ちてしまうと、絶対に這い上がって来ることが難しいであろうことは、想像に難くありません。この心霊スポットは、そういった危険もあることから、洞窟周辺には転落防止用のフェンスが設置されています。
しかし、この静岡の心霊スポットの本当の怖さは近づくと危ないということとは違う側面で展開されています。それは、静岡の心霊スポットである洞窟の名称からもうかがい知れるように、老婆を捨てた穴であったという伝説があるそうです。静岡心霊スポットの「婆々穴」は口減らしで老婆を捨てていた！？。昔で言うと、飢饉が発生したりすると村人全員の食料が行きわたらないこともあります。そんなときに、口減らしという形で人間が人間を間引いてしまうような風習があります。
このように、静岡の心霊スポットである婆々穴には、数多くの老婆が捨てられたことから、この静岡の心霊スポットでは心霊写真や不可解なうめき声が聞こえたりするのが後を絶たないということです。成仏できない老婆たちが、この心霊スポットを訪れた生者たちを、同じ目に合わせてやろうと無念の怨念で満ち溢れているのかもしれません。なお、静岡県の心霊スポットである婆々穴への行き方については、非常に難解であることから、地元の道に詳しい方などと行かれた方が良いかもしれません。
「婆々穴」への行き方はこちら。注）ここから更に移動をします。この場所が現地ではありません。。静岡県道72号線を大渕方面から富士宮方面へ向かいます。途中で見えてくる奇石博物館を過ぎた先に建造されている養鶏所の看板が設置されている交差点を曲ります。しばらく行くと、富士旭出学園の隣にそれらと思われる道が出現します。ここを静岡県道から外れて入っていくのです。そのまま道なりに進むと鉄塔が見えます。しばらく進むと分岐点に到達しますので、右折します。
ここからは、アスファルトなどで舗装されていない道となります。林の中へと入って行く道があります。恐らく、車で来られるのはここまででしょう。そのまま徒歩にて道なりに歩いていると、赤い石が確認できます。それを左折すると婆々穴へと到着することができます。静岡の心霊スポットである婆々穴についてご説明をさせて頂きました。この心霊スポットも、周囲には全く明かりもありませんので、夜に行くと非常に危険であることが伺えます。くれぐれも、行かれる方は自己責任において訪れて頂きますようお願いします。
