Old Sashiki Tunnel in Ashikita, Kumamoto Prefecture, is said to be haunted by the spirit of a woman.
Built in the Meiji era, this stone tunnel has no lighting inside. Combined with the water that drips down its walls, the atmosphere has all the classic ingredients of a Japanese haunted spot: darkness, damp stone, silence, and a sense that something is waiting in the shadows.
Adding to the unease are the headless Jizo statues said to stand in the surrounding area. Local rumors also claim that several people died in accidents during the tunnel’s construction, though details are uncertain.
On the north side of the tunnel is a slope commonly known as “Ghost Hill.” According to the legend, if you drive along this hill at night, a road that was not there during the day may suddenly appear. Those who follow it, the story says, risk driving straight off a cliff.
The area is associated with real roads, old structures, and poor visibility, so visitors should be cautious. Do not enter restricted areas, avoid unsafe nighttime exploration, respect local signs and residents, and never treat the legend as a reason to drive recklessly.

女性の霊がでると言われている。明治時代に作られた石造りのトンネル。中には照明もなく、壁面を滴り落ちる水の雰囲気も相まって心霊スポットの要素を完全に満たしている恐怖トンネル。首なしの地蔵が周囲にあることもその恐怖度を押し上げている。トンネル建設中の事故で複数の死者が出ているとも言われる。トンネル北側には通称「幽霊坂」と呼ばれる坂があり、夜間車でその坂を通過すると、昼間には存在しなかった道が現れ、そのまま崖から落ちてしまうとも言われている。
