If you met a witch or a sorcerer who could grant any wish, what would you ask for?
Most of us have probably enjoyed imagining that at least once. But reality is rarely that sweet. Whether you are buying something or visiting a theme park, almost every wish comes with a price.
This is the story of one musician who, according to rumor, may have paid for his dream with his own lifespan.
A Rock Kid Reaches for Something Beyond Reality
Mark Feld was born in England on September 30, 1947, roughly two years after the end of World War II.
From childhood, he loved music. He was the kind of guitar-obsessed kid who dreamed of one day taking on the world through songs. He practiced constantly, studied songwriting, and by the age of 18 had made his solo debut. At 20, he joined a band.
But reality was harsh. He left that band after only three months, and even afterward, recognition did not come easily. His life became painfully difficult.
Around the same time, as if trying to escape from that reality, he also began using heroin. His body and mind were gradually worn down.
And drugs were not the only thing he became deeply absorbed in.
It was the occult.
He developed an interest in grimoires, folklore, black magic, and various forms of fortune-telling. Perhaps because of the drugs, his thinking drifted further and further away from ordinary reality.
There is a saying that people turn to God when they are in trouble. In Mark’s case, facing a brutal reality, it seems he turned toward black magic and the occult instead.
Everyone has moments when they want to cling to something, or be saved by something. Some people pray in churches or shrines. Others seek guidance from experts in the path they hope to follow.
For the young Mark, the thing he happened to rely on was magic.
T. Rex, Marc Bolan, and the Rise of Glam Rock
There was once an acoustic unit called Tyrannosaurus Rex.
The band gained a fanatical, almost cult-like following. Later, after bringing in electric instruments and fully pioneering the glam rock sound, they suddenly found themselves in the global spotlight, taking in fame on a massive scale.
That band would become the legendary glam rock pioneer known as T. Rex.
And the man serving as guitarist and vocalist for T. Rex was none other than Mark Feld, the same young man who had once struggled in a corner of England.
By then, he was using the stage name Marc Bolan. From commercials to events, his days were packed with success. He had become the picture of a superstar.
He had reached the peak of his life.
If the story ended there, it would be a fairly familiar tale of struggle and success. But because this is Scary Japan, you can probably guess that it does not end so simply.
From here, the story takes a sharp turn into the occult.
“I Used to Live with a Witch”
After Marc achieved success, he reportedly told his friends and fellow musicians something unsettling from time to time.
It was a strange claim:
“I used to live with a witch.”
According to his story, he had once gone to the countryside near Paris, where he met a witch hiding in a secret refuge. The two became friendly, and for a while, he lived together with her.
There, he supposedly told the witch a certain wish:
“I don’t need any life after I turn 30. In exchange, make me an incredible superstar.”
The witch, so the story goes, agreed.
At the time Marc often told this tale, he was still struggling with heroin addiction. The people around him apparently treated it as a bizarre, drug-influenced ramble rather than a literal confession. In truth, his addiction itself should have been a serious concern.
But his drug-laced words would later seem to take on an eerie reality.
On September 16, 1977, Marc was sitting in the passenger seat of a car driven by his lover when the vehicle was involved in a crash and was badly wrecked.
Marc Bolan did not survive.
His death came exactly two weeks before his birthday.
If a Wish Could Be Granted
Among people who devote their lives to entertainment, art, dreams, and ambition, there are certainly some who value fame or success more than life itself.
If a witch appeared before you and offered to grant your wish in exchange for part of your lifespan, what would you ask for?

仮に 魔女や魔法使いと出会い、どんな願い事でも叶えて貰える のであれば、どんな願い事をするでしょうか？。恐らく多くの人がそんな事を想像して楽しんだことがあるのではないでしょうか？。ただし、現実はそう甘くはありません。。買い物をするにせよ、レジャー施設に遊びに行くにせよ、どんな願い事にも必ずと言っていい程に何かしらの対価が必要になります。。本日は、自分の夢の対価として、 自らの寿命を売り渡したと言われる一人のミュージシャン のお話をしたいと思います。
。公開日：2019年10月22日 更新日：2020年2月18日。ロック少年が手を伸ばしたのは・・・ 。。マーク＝フェルドは第二次大戦の約２年後の 1947 年 9 月 30 日にイギリスにて生まれました。。彼は幼少より音楽に親しみ、いつの日か音楽で世界に羽ばたく事を 夢見る典型的なギター少年 でした。。毎日ひたすら練習や作曲の勉強に励み、 18 歳の頃にはソロデビューを果たし、 20 歳でバンドに加入します。。しかし現実は厳しく、バンドも僅か 3 か月で脱退、その後も中々評価されずに非情に苦しい生活を余儀なくされます。
。同時に現実から逃れるかの様にヘロインにも手を出し始め、心身共に疲弊しきっていきます。。そして、薬だけではなく、彼は ” あるモノ ” にもかなり凝り始めます。。。それは ” オカルト ” です。。魔術書や伝承、黒魔術、様々な占いにも興味を持ち始め、薬の影響もあってか思考もより現実から離れていきました。。「困った時の神頼み」という諺がありますが、厳しい現実の中彼が頼ったのは黒魔術やオカルトだった様です。。誰だって何かに縋りたい、助かりたいと思う事はあると思います。
。ある人は教会や神社でお参りをしたり、又ある人は目指したい道のプロに教えを乞う。。ただ、 マーク青年の場合は頼る相手がたまたま魔術だった 、という事です。。グラムロックの伝説『 T. Rex 』とマーク＝ボラン 。。アコースティックユニットとして結成されたティラノサウルスレックスというバンドがかつて存在しました。。そのバンドは 狂信的かつカルトな人気 を誇り、後にエレクトリックを導入し、本格的なグラムロックを開拓すると瞬く間に全世界で脚光を浴び、名声を欲しいままにしました。
。そう、そのバンドこそ伝説として語り継がれるグラムロックの開拓者『 T. Rex （ティーレックス） 』 。そして T. Rex のギターヴォーカルを務める男こそ、イギリスの片隅で苦難の日々を送っていた マーク＝フェルド本人 だったのです。。彼はこの当時、ステージネームを「マーク＝ボラン」と名乗り、 CM からイベントまで毎日毎日大盛況の、まさに絵に描いたようなスーパースター！。。人生の最盛期を迎えていました。。これだけの話ならば良くある感動サクセスストーリーですが、このサイトに掲載されている時点でここで終わらない事は想像が付くと思います。
。そう、ここからは一気に話がオカルトチックになります！。俺は魔女と同棲していた 。。成功を掴んだマークでしたが、当時、仲間や親交のあったミュージシャン達に度々不気味な事を語っていたそうです。。その内容は 。「俺、昔魔女と一緒に暮らしてたんだよねー」 。という中々にぶっ飛んだ物でした。。彼の話によると、昔パリの田舎に行った時に、隠れ家に潜んでいた魔女と出会い、仲良くなってしばらくの間、一緒に住んでいたと言うのです。。そしてそこで彼は魔女にある願い事を語ります。
。。「 30 歳過ぎた後の人生はいらない。代わりに俺をものすごいスーパースターにしてくれ。」 。そして魔女はそれを承諾したらしいのです。。この話を頻繁に語っていた当時もマークは相変わらずのヘロイン中毒で、周りは薬の影響で変な事言いだした程度にしか気にしていなかったようですが（ むしろ薬中であることを心配すべきだと執筆者は思いますが・・・ ） 。彼の薬まじりのうわ言は現実の物となります。。1977 年 9 月 16 日 。マークは愛人の運転する車の助手席に座っていた所、車は事故に遇い大破、マークは帰らぬ人となります。
。そして彼の命日はちょうど彼の誕生日の 2 週間前だったそうです。。願い事が叶うなら 。芸能や芸術、人生を掛けた夢や野望を志す人々の中には、命よりも名声や成功を目指す人が確実に存在するのも事実です。。もしアナタの目の前に魔女が現れ、寿命と引き換えに願いを叶えてくれるなら 。アナタはどんな事を願いますか？。注釈：こちらの記事はオカルトマト副編集長が校正、編集させて頂きました
