Religion is deeply tied to human life for many people. In some societies, not believing in any religion can even be seen as strange. Yet depending on the country, religion itself may become a target of state pressure, social violence, or outright persecution.

This article looks at modern forms of what might be called religious hunts—cases where belief, worship, or accusations of belief can place people in danger.

No Room for Religion in a Red State: China

China has grown into one of Asia’s most powerful countries. Behind that growth is the one-party rule of the Chinese Communist Party, which not only manages the population in detail but also attempts to control religion itself.

Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity Are Also Targeted

In China, pressure is not limited to new religious movements. Even major world religions such as Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity have faced strict controls.

Common measures include demolishing religious facilities or forcing parts of them to be altered. Even when buildings are not destroyed, donations and religious books may be confiscated. The original article referenced footage of believers grieving after a Christian religious facility was shut down.

Is the Goal the Sinicization of Religion?

Why does China go so far in suppressing various religions?

One background factor is Marx’s criticism of religion as the opium of the people. Another view is that China is aiming for the Sinicization of religion, a policy direction raised by President Xi Jinping in 2015.

In practical terms, this means bringing a Marxist view of religion into modern China and strengthening support for the Communist Party. If many religions grow independently, national unity may weaken and ideological conflict may arise. By suppressing different religions, the state can maintain power.

If the Chinese Communist Party stands above religion, it also becomes easier to manage the population.

In the Shadow of the Orthodox Church: Russia

Like China, Russia was once a communist state under the Soviet Union. During the Soviet era, religion was heavily suppressed. Today, however, the Russian Orthodox Church has gained enough influence that it is sometimes described as a national religion in all but name.

Even so, religious persecution has not disappeared.

Pressure on Jehovah’s Witnesses

One of the most prominent examples in Russia involves Jehovah’s Witnesses, a Christian-based religious organization. In Japan, the group is widely known through debates and court cases involving refusal of blood transfusions.

Russia’s crackdown on Jehovah’s Witnesses has been carried out under laws restricting missionary activity, with support from Russian Orthodox believers and President Vladimir Putin. After Jehovah’s Witnesses were designated as an extremist organization, alongside groups such as Aum Shinrikyo and ISIS, many believers were detained.

The crackdown has been criticized not only by Jehovah’s Witnesses themselves but also by various human rights organizations.

What Is the Missionary Activity Restriction Law?

The missionary activity restriction law limits where missionary work can be carried out. In general, such activity is allowed only in churches or meeting places approved by the Russian state.

The Russian Orthodox Church and Mormon groups have permission, but Jehovah’s Witnesses do not. As a result, Jehovah’s Witnesses who conduct missionary activity inside Russia without authorization may be arrested.

One stated reason for suppressing Jehovah’s Witnesses is that they are seen as lacking patriotism toward Russia. According to the article, the groups being targeted in this context are Jehovah’s Witnesses and Aum Shinrikyo. Aum Shinrikyo carried out terrorist attacks in Japan, but Jehovah’s Witnesses have not committed such acts.

Witch Hunts Spread Beyond Europe

Witch hunts are famous as a form of religious persecution in early modern Europe. They are not as common as they once were, but they have not completely vanished.

In Papua New Guinea, a tropical island nation, there have been many cases in which environmental changes or misfortune are blamed on so-called witches, leading to rape and assault. Some people have even appeared who seek out alleged witches for money, making it a new religious and social problem in the country.

In Africa, witch hunts have occurred in countries such as Nigeria, Gambia, and Tanzania. In Gambia, there have even been claims that the president at the time was involved.

A World Where Believers Are Not Always Saved

In today’s Japan, freedom of religion is recognized, so problems described as religious hunts do not occur in the same way. Around the world, however, many forms of religious persecution and violence still take place—things that may seem almost unimaginable from Japan.

There is a saying that faith saves. But it may still be a long time before that idea can be taken for granted everywhere.

For travelers, this is also a reminder to research current local laws and social conditions before visiting sensitive religious or political sites, and to avoid unauthorized activity that could put yourself or others at risk.
