Among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, many are often discussed in relation to the spread of technology and culture that followed the conquests of Alexander the Great, king of the Macedonian Empire. The age shaped by that movement is known as the Hellenistic period, when different civilizations mixed and, according to many accounts, technical knowledge advanced dramatically.

But one wonder had already been completed long before Alexander’s unification and the influence of the Hellenistic world: the Great Pyramid of Giza, the oldest and largest of the Seven Wonders.

In an earlier discussion of ley lines, we touched on the placement of the pyramids. This time, let’s take another look at the Great Pyramid of Giza, the only one of the Seven Wonders still standing today.

The age of the Great Pyramid

Pyramids and temples are symbols of ancient Egyptian civilization, but many have already weathered away or fallen into ruin. Pyramid construction is believed to have continued over an extremely long period—around 1,000 years—and more than 80 pyramids are said to exist in total.

Among them, the Great Pyramid of Giza remains the largest and one of the most mysterious. Research generally dates its construction to around 2550–2470 BCE, during the reigns of successive pharaohs. Whether it was built continuously across that span, or completed in a much shorter period, is still the kind of question that makes the technical power of ancient Egypt feel almost unreal.

There is also a more visually striking theory: although the pyramids of Giza now give a strong reddish-brown impression, their original appearance may have been covered in smooth white limestone casing stones.

Such decorative finishing was not unique to one part of the Giza pyramids. Similar techniques are said to have appeared across many Egyptian ruins of the time. In any case, the Great Pyramid—generally attributed to King Khufu—remained the tallest structure in the world for roughly 4,000 years.

Why were the pyramids built?

One major theory is that the pyramids were built above all because of the ancient Egyptians’ view of death and the afterlife. The pharaohs likely poured their own prestige and the full power of the state into these vast construction projects.

For example, in front of what is believed to be Khufu’s pyramid, a wooden boat was found buried with it. Some interpret this as a vessel meant for the pharaoh’s journey after death.

When people think of pyramid burial goods, ornate treasures often come to mind, but the culture of mummification is just as important. Many researchers have pointed out that in ancient Egypt, great pharaohs were believed to live again in the afterlife as kings or gods, even after the soul had separated from the body.

The many wall paintings left in pyramids and related sites show traces of this belief in the world after death, including images thought to depict pharaohs in the afterlife.

Astonishingly precise surveying and construction

As mentioned above, even though the pyramids are remains of an ancient civilization from around 2550 BCE, their surveying and architectural techniques are known to have been extremely advanced.

Each side of the pyramid is aligned accurately with the cardinal directions—north, south, east, and west. This is often said to reflect the accuracy of astronomy at the time. The common explanation is that builders used the positions of the stars to determine direction and the base layout, then quarried huge stones averaging around 2.5 tons and stacked them with extraordinary precision.

Even in the Great Pyramid, which rises close to 150 meters, the margin of error has been confirmed to be very small.

Many mysteries also remain around where the stones came from and how they were transported. The limestone used for the casing stones appears to have come from nearby quarry sites. However, much of the granite used inside is said by some researchers to have been transported from Aswan, about 900 kilometers south of the pyramid field. If this theory is correct, the stones were moved using the flow of the Nile River before being worked and set into place.

The estimated number of stones used in Khufu’s Great Pyramid is astonishing: around 2.3 million.

Inside and below the pyramid, passages and corridors were also constructed. The number of workers mobilized for this enormous project is often estimated at around 20,000 to 30,000.

And yet one of the strangest questions remains unresolved: even if successive pharaohs ordered the pyramids to be built, who actually designed them, and how?

The Egyptian pyramids are said to have been “built by the pharaohs,” but that mainly refers to leadership and command. The foundation of the technology itself is still wrapped in mystery.

A mystery still under study

Serious research into the Giza Plateau, including surveys and attempts to reconstruct ancient maps, began around the 17th century and continues today.

From an archaeological perspective, the mystery of the Great Pyramid tends to focus on two major questions:

How was the pyramid built?

And what kind of person—or group of people—was involved in its construction?

The main purpose of the pyramid is widely believed to have been the protection of the pharaoh’s body after death. But the detailed construction process, and the people whose work made the pyramid project succeed, may still be sleeping beneath the sand.

For travelers, the Giza pyramid complex is a major historic site, not an abandoned ruin to explore freely. If you visit, stay in permitted areas, follow local rules and guide instructions, and never climb or enter restricted spaces.
