When people hear the words “maritime disaster,” many immediately think of the Titanic, the luxury liner whose maiden voyage ended in tragedy and later became the subject of a famous film.
The sea is full of strange stories, legends, and urban myths. But among them, the mystery of the Ourang Medan, said to have taken place in the late 1940s, is especially unsettling.
Some people argue that the story is fiction. Others believe it may have really happened. The truth remains unclear. Still, there are accounts claiming that another ship actually received a distress signal from the vessel, which makes the case difficult to dismiss completely.
Of course, whether you believe it or not is up to you.
A Strange Case Reportedly Recorded in 1952
According to the story, the incident involving the Dutch cargo ship Ourang Medan was reported in a book said to have been published by the U.S. Coast Guard in 1952.
The event itself is said to have occurred sometime between the end of 1947 and the beginning of 1948. A distress message was reportedly sent from the Ourang Medan in Morse code.
The message was chilling:
“All officers, including the captain, are dead in the chartroom and on the bridge.
Probably the entire crew is dead.”
At the time, sending a distress signal by Morse code was standard practice, so the American ship Silver Star, which is said to have received the transmission, likely assumed some kind of accident had occurred.
But the situation was far from normal. After the first message, more unclear and incomprehensible Morse code reportedly followed. Then, at the very end, one final ominous message was received:
“I die.”
The Silver Star treated the transmission as an SOS and, a few hours later, reportedly located the Ourang Medan in the Strait of Malacca, between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific region.
When the crew of the Silver Star hurried aboard the Ourang Medan, it was already too late.
The Crew Was Found Dead
According to the legend, everything described in the message was true. Every crew member aboard the Ourang Medan was dead.
Many of the bodies were said to have been frozen with expressions of terror, as if they had died while looking at something horrifying. Some were reportedly found reaching out, as though trying to grab onto something in their final moments.
And yet, there were no signs that the crew had fought one another. No evidence was found suggesting murder or violence caused by an internal dispute.
Soon afterward, a fire reportedly broke out in the ship’s hold. The crew of the Silver Star returned to their own vessel and watched as the Ourang Medan went down. Because the ship exploded and sank, even the cause of death could not be confirmed.
So who sent the Morse code message to the Silver Star? And if everyone aboard was already dead, what did the distress signal mean?
The mystery only deepened.
A book describing the events was reportedly published about four years after the incident.
Was the Ourang Medan Story Fabricated?
Some time after accounts of the Ourang Medan began circulating, people pointed out a major problem: no official registration record of the ship could be found.
Because of this, more people began to argue that the entire incident may have been a fabrication.
However, believers in the story have raised their own questions. Would an organization such as the U.S. Coast Guard really publish a story like this if there were nothing to it? And the alleged incident took place in 1947 or 1948, just after the end of World War II, when much of the world was still focused on recovery.
To some, it seems unlikely that such a grim “joke” would have been created in that atmosphere.
Was the Ship Involved in Something Illegal?
Some people who believe the Ourang Medan case was real suggest that the reason no registration record exists is because the ship may have been involved in criminal activity.
Others point out that the ship may have changed owners and simply was not re-registered afterward.
Considering the historical period, this is not impossible. Only a couple of years had passed since the end of World War II. Even if official documents existed, it is uncertain whether every civilian vessel was perfectly tracked and managed.
And if the ship had been involved in illegal activity during the confusion after the war, a missing registration record would not be especially surprising.
The Deaths and the Explosion
According to the account attributed to the U.S. Coast Guard publication, every crew member on the Ourang Medan was found dead, and the ship later exploded after the Silver Star arrived.
If that record is accurate, it suggests that the ship may have been carrying some kind of flammable cargo. That unknown cargo could be one clue connecting what the Ourang Medan was transporting to the deaths of its crew.
But even if the cargo was involved, one question remains:
What did the crew see, or experience, that made them die with such fear on their faces?
The identity of the person who sent the radio message, the strange deaths of the crew, and the final explosion of the ship all remain unresolved.
Today, the Ourang Medan is best treated as a chilling maritime legend with disputed documentation. The Strait of Malacca is a real and extremely busy shipping route, not a sightseeing destination for this story. Travelers should not attempt to seek out wreck sites or enter restricted maritime areas.

海難事故と聞くとすぐに思いつくのは映画にもなった豪華客船「タイタニック号」の処女航海での沈没でしょうか？。船や海に関する不思議な話や都市伝説は非常に多い ですが、そんな中でも1940年代後半に起こったとされる オーラン・メダン号の怪事件は非常に恐ろしい です。この話はフィクションである、という声もありますが、実際に起きたという説もあり、真相は不明です。しかし、実際にこの船からの信号を受け取ったという船もあり、判断が難しいところではありますが 非常に興味深い海難事件 。
もちろん…信じるか信じないかは貴方次第です。1952年米国湾岸警備隊により報告された怪事件。。1952年、米国湾岸警備隊によって出版されたという本に報告されたのが、オランダの貨物船、オーラン・メダン号に起きた怪事件でした。事件が起こったとされるのは1947年年末から1948年年始にかけて。オーラン・メダン号からの緊急メッセージとしてモールス信号が発信されました。その内容は以下のようなものです。「船長を含む全ての士官が海図室と船橋で死んでいる。
多分、乗組員全員が死んでいる」 。当時は救難信号としてモールス信号を発信するのが当たり前であったことから、何か事故にでも巻き込まれたのか？。と感じたのはこの信号を受け取ったとされるアメリカ船であるシルバー・スター号でした。しかし、状況から察するに普通ではなく、理解不可能なモールス信号や読み取れない通信が続いた一番最後に。「自分も死ぬ」 という不吉なメッセージが残されました。S.O.Sメッセージとしてこれを受け取ったシルバー・スター号は数時間後にオーラン・メダン号の位置を特定。
そこは太平洋とインド洋の間にあるマラッカ海峡でした。駆けつけたシルバー・スター号の乗組員が急いでオーラン・メダン号に乗り込んだ時には既に遅かったのです。。全員が怪死していたオーラン・メダン号。。アメリカの乗船員が駆けつけたオーラン・メダン号の上では、メッセージの通り、全ての乗組員が一人残らず亡くなっていたそうです。ほとんどの遺体は何かに怯えたような恐怖の表情を残しており、何かを掴もうとして亡くなっている遺体などもあったそうですが、船員同士で争った形跡はなかったのです。
（内部でのトラブルによる殺人などの痕跡は見つからなかった）。しばらくするとオーラン・メダン号の船倉から火が出たため、シルバー・スター号の乗員は船に戻り、沈んでいくオーラン・メダン号を見守ったと言われています。では、一体誰がシルバー・スター号にモールス信号を送ったのでしょうか？そもそも、全員が死んでしまうという状況で救難信号を発信した意味とは？。謎は深まるばかりでした。オーラン・メダン号そのものが爆発して沈んでしまった為、死亡原因すらも特定出来ていないのです。
この事件が起こった4年後に一連の出来事をまとめた本が出版されたそうです。オーラン・メダン号事件、捏造の可能性。。オーラン・メダン号の出来事を記した本が出版されてから、しばらく経った頃、船そのものの登記記録がなかった事が発覚し、オーラン・メダン号事件そのものがいわゆる捏造であったのではないか？という主張が増えたそうです。しかし、わざわざ米国湾岸警備隊という組織が、本を出版してまで、こんな話を作って何か得をするのでしょうか？。そもそも、事件が起こったとされる1947年～1948年は第二次世界大戦終戦直後の事です。
いわば世界的に復興に向けて動いている時期にこんなブラックジョークが出るとも考えにくいでしょう。オーラン・メダン号は犯罪に関わっていた？。オーラン・メダン号事件を事実だったと支持している人の一部では、登記されていない理由を犯罪に関わる船であったのではないか？と主張しています。また、その他にも船の所有者が変わった後に再登記がされなかった可能性などを指摘しています。これは時代背景を考えると充分にあり得る話です。第二次世界大戦終戦からたった2年ほどしか経過していない時期ですから、公文書などはともかく、 一般船まで完全に管理されていたかと言われれば怪しい ような気もしますよね。
また、終戦後のどさくさに紛れて犯罪に関わっていた船であるとすれば、尚更登記などはされていなくて当然ではないでしょうか？。乗組員の死と船の爆発。米国湾岸警備隊の本によると、オーラン・メダン号は乗組員が全員死亡しており、さらにシルバー・スター号が駆けつけた後に爆発したことが記録されています。この記録が正しければ、少なくとも可燃性の”何か”が積荷にあった可能性が高く、乗組員の死因とオーラン・メダン号が運んでいた”何か”の関連性を推測する材料になるのではないでしょうか？
。しかし、それらが関連していたとしても、乗組員は一体何に怯えながら亡くなっていったのでしょうか？。無線の正体、そして謎の怪死を遂げた乗組員達…。彼らの身に一体何が起こったのかは知る由もありません
