On August 20, 2007, a young girl on Jedediah Island in Canada found a sneaker that had washed up on the beach. It was a single large shoe. When people looked more closely, they realized there was still a sock inside—and part of a human foot.
That unsettling discovery became the beginning of a much larger mystery. In the surrounding area, more feet believed to be from human remains began washing ashore. Strangely, many of them seemed to share one detail: they were still wearing sneakers.
This is the story of the waters sometimes described as a sea where human feet drift ashore, and the eerie events that made the Salish Sea infamous.
A Coast Where Human Feet Washed Up
The area where the foot was found is part of the Salish Sea, a body of water in North America stretching around coastal British Columbia, Canada, and Washington State in the United States. It is not open ocean in the usual sense, but an inland sea with islands, channels, and complex currents.
Beginning in August 2007 and continuing through May 2014, more than ten feet reportedly washed up in this region, creating anxiety and speculation among local people. About three weeks after the first discovery on Jedediah Island, a second foot was found on nearby Gabriola Island.
Reports continued after that around the Salish Sea. Along the coast of British Columbia alone, more than ten feet were found, while four were reported along the Washington coast. The one common feature was the most disturbing one: the feet were wearing sneakers.
What was happening in these waters? And who had these shoes belonged to?
Why Only the Feet?
At first, the discoveries inspired all kinds of theories. Over time, however, some parts of the mystery were reportedly explained through science.
In submerged human remains, the ankle is considered a relatively fragile point. As a body decomposes in water, it is apparently not especially rare for the foot to separate. If that foot is inside a sneaker, the shoe can provide buoyancy, allowing it to float and eventually drift ashore.
Another detail added to the speculation: many of the sneakers that washed up were said to have been manufactured before 2004. Because of that, one hypothesis suggested that some of the feet might have belonged to victims of the massive tsunami caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake.
The 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami
The earthquake off Sumatra on December 26, 2004, was widely reported around the world. It was an enormous magnitude 9.1 earthquake, but the greatest devastation came from the tsunami it triggered.
The tsunami struck coastlines around the Indian Ocean. Some reports say the waves reached as high as 34 meters, and even on average, waves of around 10 meters hit coastal areas multiple times.
By December 20, 2005, the number of victims attributed to the disaster was said to be more than 200,000, making it one of the worst disasters of the modern era. The United Nations also pointed out that many areas around Indonesia had little experience with tsunami preparedness, which contributed to the scale of the tragedy.
Who Did the Feet Belong To?
In the end, some of the feet that washed ashore have been identified. Some belonged to people who died by suicide, while others were victims of accidents. There are also cases that have not been fully explained, including remains estimated to date back to around 1987.
Because not everything has been identified, the story has also become the subject of urban-legend-style rumors. Some people have speculated about crime victims, human trafficking, or mafia involvement, but these remain rumors rather than proven explanations.
No one knows every route these remains may have taken before reaching the Salish Sea. Still, when you consider the geography of the area, it is hard not to feel a chill at the thought that the causes may not all be limited to accidents or natural disasters.
If you visit coastal areas connected to this story, treat the beaches with respect and caution. If you ever find what may be human remains, do not touch them—leave the area as it is and contact local authorities immediately.

2007年8月20日のこと。カナダのジェデダイア島という島で1人の少女が浜辺に打ち付けられた1つのスニーカーを発見しました。。片方しかなかったその大きなスニーカーをよくよく見ると、靴下が残っており、さらに人間の片足首が残っていたのです。。この不気味な出来事を皮切りに、この周囲一帯にはいくつかの遺体と思わしき足首が流れ着くようになりました。不思議なことに、この周囲に流れ着く足首は共通点があり、必ずスニーカーを履いた足であったそうです。今回はこの足首の漂う海と呼ばれる海域と、そこで起こった不気味な出来事について紹介します。
。遺体の足首が流れ着く海域。この足首が流れ着いた海域は サリッシュ海と呼ばれる北米地域一帯に広がる海のこと です。いわゆる内海になっており、外側の海ではありません。。アメリカのバンクーバーやカナダに広がるこの海域は、2007年の8月を皮切りに2014年の5月までに10以上の足首が漂着しており、この奇怪な現象は現地の人々に様々な不安と憶測を呼ぶ事態になりました。最初に発見されたジェデダイア島でしたが、それから3週間経った頃には付近にあるガブリオラ島で2つ目の足首が発見されました。
この後も足首発見の報告は、サリッシュ海の近郊で続き、カナダのブリティッシュコロンビア沿岸だけでも10個以上、アメリカのワシントン沿岸では4個の足首が発見されています。全ての足首に共通するには、唯一「スニーカー」を履いているという事だけ。一体、この海域には何が起こっていたのでしょうか？。また、スニーカーの足首の持ち主とは一体誰であったのでしょうか？。水死体の足首だけが漂う。。当初は多くの憶測を呼んだ流れ着く足首でしたが、いくつかのポイントは科学的に解明されたそうです。
いわゆる水死体になった人間の体の中で、足首は比較的脆いポイントであることが指摘されており、水死体の足首が無くなることはそこまで珍しい現象ではないそうです。加えて、共通点となったスニーカーによって一定の浮力を得た足首が流れ着いているという結論が出ているようです。また、流れ着いているスニーカーのほとんどが2004年以前に生存されているものであることも確認されたことから、流れ着いた足首は スマトラ沖地震の津波の被害者のものではないか？という仮説が立てられました。
スマトラ沖地震の大津波。スマトラ沖地震は日本でも大きく報道されたことから、詳細を知っている人も多いでしょう。2004年12月26日に発生した、マグニチュード9.1という超大型の地震でした。地震そのものの被害よりも叫ばれたのは、この地震によって発生した津波の被害です。インド洋沿岸を襲った津波は、最大で34メートルの高さに達したとも言われており、平均しても10メートルの津波が数回沿岸部を襲っています。。この地震による被害者とされている人数は、2005年12月20日までに20万人以上とされており、近年では最悪の災害の1つとして知られています。
インドネシア周辺では、津波の危機管理や経験がほとんどなかった事から被害者が多くなったとの見解が国連から指摘されています。流れ着いた足首の正体。。結果的に現在までに流れ着いた足首のいくつかは、自殺者であったり事故の犠牲者であったりと身元が確認されたものもあります。中には1987年頃だと推定されるものもあるなど、全容解明には至っていません。また、都市伝説的に語られているものには、犯罪に巻き込まれた犠牲者のものである説や、人身売買、マフィアの関与説などもあがっています。
どのようなルートを辿って、遺体の足首だけがこの海域に流れ着いたのかは不明ですが、 サリッシュ海の位置関係を考えると事故や災害以外にも原因がありそう な気がしてゾッとしてしまいますね…。参考書籍
