On March 18, 1990, a shocking art theft took place at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, Massachusetts. Thirteen works of art were stolen from the museum, and they were not ordinary pieces. They included works by historic names such as Monet, Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Degas.
The total loss is said to be around $500 million, making it one of the most famous unsolved art thefts in history. But beyond the scale of the crime, people have long whispered about the strange questions surrounding it.

What Happened at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum?
On March 18, 1990, two men disguised as Boston police officers reportedly arrived at the museum and told the night security guard that they were responding to a disturbance. After being allowed in through the entrance, they tied up that guard and another guard, then carried out the theft.
The next morning, a guard arriving for the next shift noticed something was wrong and contacted authorities. By then, many masterpieces had already disappeared from the museum.
The crime looked almost theatrical: rather than grabbing random valuables, the thieves seemed to target specific famous works. The biggest mystery, however, is often said to be the motive.
Why steal masterpieces that would be almost impossible to sell openly?
All 13 stolen works are still missing today.
Was It Really About Money?
Among the stolen works was Rembrandt’s The Storm on the Sea of Galilee, said to be the only seascape Rembrandt ever painted. It is one of the most famous works in the art world. Other stolen pieces, such as Monet’s Chez Tortoni, were also instantly recognizable masterpieces.
In many art thefts, the assumed motive is resale through an illegal market. But the works taken from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum were so famous that selling them, even in the underworld, would have been extremely difficult. That is why the motive remains so unclear.
One theory suggests the thieves were professional criminals acting under orders from a crime boss, and that the works may have been stolen as part of a private “collection.” But because the artworks have never been recovered, the truth remains unknown.
The thieves also did not seem to steal carelessly. According to accounts of the case, they selected famous works from multiple areas of the museum, as if they knew what they were looking for.
Naturally, the FBI began investigating. Although several leads and reported sightings emerged over the years, none led to a resolution.
A $5 Million Reward
Despite the FBI’s efforts, the case seemed to be going cold after the last major reported lead around 2000. In 2013, the FBI and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum announced a $5 million reward for the safe return of the stolen works in good condition.
Because so many years had passed since the theft, authorities also indicated that people connected to the stolen art or later transactions might be able to avoid prosecution through legal arrangements. Even so, there was reportedly no meaningful response.
The FBI later stated that, in 2010, it had identified three people believed to have been connected to the case and organized crime. However, two of them died in 2013, and the remaining person denied involvement. None of the three was charged.
As a result, the stolen masterpieces remain missing from the public world.
An Unsolved Theft Full of Questions
In a typical theft, criminals usually need a buyer or market in advance. If there is no way to sell what was stolen, the crime may become pointless. That is why thieves are often said to prefer jewelry, precious metals, or other items that can be moved more easily than world-famous paintings.
But in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum heist, the thieves appeared to target famous artworks deliberately. That choice has made the purpose of the crime one of its greatest mysteries.
Even with a large reward and the possibility of legal deals, the investigation has not produced the return of the works. What was really hidden behind this theft? And will these priceless masterpieces ever come back safely?

1990年3月18日、アメリカ、ボストンにあるイザベラ・ステュアート・ガードナー美術館から名画13点が盗まれるという事件が発生しました。いわゆる美術品の盗難事件ではあるのですが、この 事件で盗まれた絵画はいわゆる「名画」ばかり でした。モネやフェルメール、レンブラント、ドガなど歴史の名を残した画家の作品ばかりが盗まれており、その被害総額は約5億ドルにもなる と言われています。この盗難事件には非常に不可思議な点が囁かれています。今回は 約30年前に実際に起こったイザベラ・ガードナー美術品盗難事件について紹介 していきます。
イザベラ・ガードナー盗難事件とは？。1990年3月18日、ボストンの警官に扮した2人組の犯人は、夜勤の警備員に異常があったという通報を受けた」と言い、入り口から堂々と侵入すると、もう1人の警備員ごと縛り上げて犯行に及んだとされています。。翌朝、交代に来た警備員が異常に気付き通報したものの、すでに名画の数々は犯行現場から持ち去られた後だったそうです。まるで現代の怪盗ように特定の名画ばかりを狙った犯行でしたが、この盗難事件最大の謎は 「売りさばけない名画を何故盗んだのか？
」 という動機だと言われています。この事件で盗まれた13点の名画は現在でも全て行方が分からないままになっているそうです。。金銭目的ではなかった盗難事件？。。画像引用元：ガラリアの海の嵐。上記作品は、レンブラントが唯一残したと言われる海景画であり、美術界では非常に有名な作品の1つです。同様に、他に盗まれた名画もモネの「トルト二亭にて」など、一目で価値が分かってしまうほどの有名な作品ばかりでした。通常、美術品の盗難であればいわゆる闇市場などに売りさばく事を目的としますが、イザベラ・ガードナー美術館から盗まれた名画の数々はそういった市場でも売ることが不可能だと言われており、犯人達が何故これらを盗んだのか？
という動機が全く分かっていないのです。一説には、盗難の実行犯は盗みのプロであり、犯 罪組織の親分的な存在からの指示によって「コレクション」として盗まれたのではないか？というものもありますが、これらも作品が見つかっていないことから真意は不明のままです。しかも、 犯人達は無造作に美術品を盗んだのではなく、複数の場所に分かれていた名画ばかりを選んだかのように盗んでいた そうです。当然、FBIもこの事件の捜査に乗り出しますが、いくつかの目撃情報が得られたのみで事件解決には至っていません。
FBIと美術館がかけた懸賞金は500万ドルに！。。FBIの賢明な捜査にも関わらず、2000年頃に最後の目撃情報を得てから迷宮入りしそうになったことで、2013年、FBIとイザベラ・スチュアート・ガードナー美術館はこの事件で盗まれた美術品が良好な状態で無事に返還された場合には 500万ドルという多額の懸賞金をかけることに しました。この事件は発生から年数が経過していたこともあり、盗難品とその後の取り引きなどに関係した人間に関しては司法取引によって刑事訴追を免除することも可能性として発表しましたが、一切の反応もなかったそうです。
FBIは単独で2010年にこの事件と犯罪組織に関わったと思われる人間3人を特定したそうですが、2013年に2人が死亡し、残った1人も関与を否定している状態です。ちなみに、この3人は誰一人として起訴もされていません。結果的に、盗まれた美術品は未だに表の世界から消えてしまったままなのです。謎多き盗難事件。一般手な盗難事件であれば、いわゆる闇市場があり、売り先が決まっていなければ盗んだところで無意味に終わってしまうことから、名画ではなく貴金属類などの方が狙われやすいと言われています。
しかし、このイザベラ・ガードナー美術館の盗難事件では、作為的に名画ばかりを狙った犯行によって、犯行目的が迷宮入りしてしまいました。加えて多額の懸賞金や司法取引などの可能性が示唆されたにも関わらず、何も捜査に進展がないそうです。一体この事件の背景には何が隠れているのでしょうか？貴重な名画の数々が再び無事に戻ることはあるのでしょうか？
