Sannai Cemetery in Aomori City is said to be one of the largest cemeteries in Aomori Prefecture. It is also known as the resting place of the famous artist Shiko Munakata.
Several ghost stories and sightings are associated with the cemetery. Visitors have reported seeing the spirit of a woman crawling on all fours as if chasing people, a male ghost jogging in a blood-covered running shirt, and the apparition of a young boy sitting alone.
There are also rumors that photos taken of the graves sometimes show red orbs. As with many cemetery legends, these stories are passed around as rumors rather than confirmed events, but they have helped give Sannai Cemetery a reputation among local horror fans.
By day, it is a large public cemetery. At night, however, the atmosphere is said to change completely as the area becomes quiet and empty.
One well-known local rumor says that if you drive three times around the circular flower bed inside the cemetery, the ghost of a woman will appear.
If you visit, remember that this is an active cemetery and a place of mourning. Follow posted rules, do not disturb graves or visitors, avoid unsafe nighttime behavior, and never trespass in restricted areas.
