Everyone has facial expressions. By moving more than 30 muscles in the face, humans show joy, anger, sadness, fear, and countless subtle emotions.
But in 1972, according to an American urban legend, a woman with no expression at all appeared in a hospital. Her face was said to be as blank as a mannequin’s. A single eerie photo later became associated with the story, and overseas horror fans came to know her as “The Expressionless.”
Was she real, or was the whole thing fiction? Here is the legend and the rumors surrounding it.
The Incident at the Hospital
The story is said to have taken place in June 1972 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California.
A woman entered the hospital alone. Her clothes were covered in blood, and she carried nothing in her hands. She kept her mouth tightly shut and refused to say a word.
At first, the nurses thought she might have been involved in some kind of accident or crime. They were alarmed, but not yet terrified. That changed when the other patients around her began to panic.
One nurse looked closely and cried out. The woman’s face had no expression at all. Like a mannequin, there was no visible emotion.
The Woman’s Strange Behavior
Then the expressionless woman pulled something bloody from her mouth and threw it against the wall.
A nurse looked at the dark red, grotesque mass. According to the legend, it was a piece of a dead cat.
Realizing something was terribly wrong, hospital staff quietly contacted the police. Until officers arrived, they decided they would need to restrain the woman. Staff told her they were going to examine her and led her to a hospital room.
While they prepared to restrain her, she remained calm. Even when staff asked her questions, she stayed completely expressionless and gave no reply. It was as if she were a doll, and no one could tell whether she even understood what was happening.
The Sudden Attack
The moment the staff finally tried to restrain her, the woman changed.
Her earlier calm vanished, and she resisted with incredible strength. Even while struggling, her face remained blank.
As she tried to leave the bed, a male doctor and a female doctor attempted to hold her down. When the male doctor looked into her face, an expression appeared for the first time.
She was smiling.
Her teeth were exposed, but they were not ordinary human teeth. The legend describes them as long, thin, needle-like points. The female doctor reportedly fainted from terror.
“I Am God”
The male doctor asked her, “What are you?”
At that moment, an alarm rang through the hospital. Footsteps approached, likely the police arriving.
When the woman heard the alarm, she suddenly raised her head and lunged at the male doctor. Her sharp teeth sank deep into his neck. The bite struck near the carotid artery, and when she pulled away, blood sprayed from the wound.
The woman then leaned close to the fallen doctor and whispered in his ear:
“I am God.”
By the time police and other staff arrived, the woman had disappeared.
The female doctor who had fainted was not attacked. According to the story, she was the one who gave the woman the name “The Expressionless.” After that incident, the woman with no expression was never seen again.
Is “The Expressionless” a True Story?
Who was she? Why did she come to the hospital? Where did she go afterward?
In the legend, all of those questions remain unanswered. Only one photo was said to remain, helping the story spread as an American urban legend.
However, that photo is not actually evidence of the incident.
The image often associated with “The Expressionless” appeared in an American medical journal called Assignments, first published in 1972. It was photographed in 1968 by Lord Snowdon. The scene shows trainees practicing nursing care on a mannequin.
In other words, the “woman” in the famous photo really was a doll.
Because of that, many people believe the story of “The Expressionless” may have been created from the unsettling image.
Still, some versions of the rumor claim the incident was based on a real person. There are cases where severe stress, especially in childhood, can affect a person’s ability to make facial expressions or speak. Some people have also speculated about illegal drugs, since drug dependency and severe mental distress can sometimes be associated with facial muscle problems, distorted expressions, confusion, or sudden violent behavior.
These ideas are only speculation, not proof. The legend remains unverified.

A Modern Creepypasta Legend
“The Expressionless” remains one of the more unsettling American urban legends: a silent woman, a hospital, a mannequin-like face, and a single image that may have inspired the entire myth.
America has many other urban legends as well, including the story of the man sometimes called “Faceless Charlie,” a legend with a deeply tragic real-life background.
It may be easy to dismiss “The Expressionless” as pure fiction. But people with little or no visible facial expression do exist in real life, for many human and medical reasons. Perhaps that is why this story continues to feel so disturbing: it takes something real and twists it into a nightmare.

〈表情のない女・無表情の化け物〉事件 。。事件は 1972 年 6 月、アメリカ・カリフォルニア州ロサンゼルスにある「シダーズ・シナイ・メディカルセンター」で起こりました。病院にやって来た1人の女。女の服は 血まみれ で、手にはなにも持っていませんでした。女は口を堅く閉ざし、一言も話そうとしません。看護師ははじめ、何らかの事件に巻き込まれたのかと思い、驚きはしたものの、そこまで恐れはしませんでした。しかし周囲の患者が慌てふためいたのを見て、状況は一変。
看護師も、思わず声をあげました。まるでマネキンのように、女にまったく表情がなかったからです。。無表情の女と病院の対応 。。しかも無表情の女は、口から血にまみれた 「何か」 を取り出し、壁に叩きつけました。思わず目を向ける看護師。赤黒い、グロテスクなかたまり……それはなんと、 猫の死骸の肉片 でした。異常性を感じた病院側は、こっそり 警察 に通報。警察が到着するまで女を 拘束 するべきだと考えます。まずは女を病室のベッドへ連れていくことにしました。
診察を行うと言って、誘いだすスタッフたち。拘束の準備を行っている最中、女はおとなしくしていたといいます。しかしスタッフが質問を投げかけても、相変わらず 無表情 で、女からの返答は一切なし。まるで人形のようで、話が聞こえているのかすらわかりませんでした。突然の抵抗。。準備が整い、スタッフたちがついに拘束をはじめようとした、その瞬間！。今までのおとなしさがウソのように、女は 信じられないほどの力で抵抗 してきました。もちろん抵抗しているときも、無表情のままです。
。ベッドを離れようとする女。やむをえず、男女2人の医師が力づくで抑えつけようとします。男性医師が取り押さえた女の顔をのぞき込むと、 なんと女の顔にはじめて表情が浮かびあがったのです 。女は、笑っていました。。歯を見せて、笑っていました。しかもその歯は普通の人間のそれではなく、 細長い針のようなもの が並んでいます。。それを見た女性医師は、恐怖のあまり失神してしまいました。「私は神だ」 そして失踪 。。男性医師は女にたずねました。「お前は何者だ？
」 。その瞬間、警報音が響きわたりました。近づいてくる足音。きっと、警察が到着したのでしょう。しかしその警報を聞いた女は、 突如顔を上げ、男性医師に飛びかかりました。。うめき声をあげる医師の首元に、深々と突き刺さる 鋭い女の歯 。。かまれた箇所はちょうど 頸動脈 （けいどうみゃく）にあたり、女が歯を抜くと 鮮血 が吹きあがりました。そして女は倒れた男性医師に近づき、耳元で 「私は神だ」 とささやいたのです。。警察や他のスタッフが到着するも、女はすでに姿を消していました。
気絶していた女性医師は、幸いにも女に襲われることはありませんでした。この女性が女を 「The Expressionless（ 表情がない女・無表情の化け物 ）」 と名付けます。この事件以降、表情のない女が姿を現すことは二度とありませんでした。「表情のない女・無表情の化け物」は実話？真相は？。いったいこの女は何者なのか、なんの目的で病院にやってきたのか、その後どこへ消えたのか……すべては闇の中です。ただ 1枚の写真のみ が残され、人々の間で語られ、「表情のない女」は アメリカの都市伝説 として有名になりました。
「表情のない女・無表情の化け物」とされる写真 引用元：Creepypasta Wiki – Fandom 。ですが実はこの写真、事件とはまったく関係のない画像なんです。。『ASSIGNMENTS』 （1972年初版）というアメリカの 医学雑誌 に掲載された写真で、写真家のスノードン卿によって1968年に撮影されました。
マネキン人形を相手に看護訓練をする研修生たちを撮影したもので……つまり、 この女は本当に人形 。。そのため、 この不気味にも見える写真から「表情のない女」の話が作られたのではないか ……という説があります。しかしその一方で、 「実話だ」 という説もあります。幼いころに 強いストレス を受けることで、表情がうまく作れなくなったり、言葉が話せなくなってしまうことがあります。表情のない女も、そういった障害をもっていたのかもしれません。。薬物などの 違法ドラッグ説 も考えられます。
薬物依存症患者のなかには、 顔面の筋肉が麻痺 して表情が作れなくなってしまう例や、 いびつに変形 してしまうことがあります。また精神的な錯乱から異常な行動をとったり、突然暴れだすことも。薬物依存症だったのなら、猫をかみちぎったり、 「私は神だ」 などと話した異常性にも、うなずけるものがあります。。ちなみに YouTube では、この一連の事件を再現した動画があります。クオリティは高いのですが、ショッキングな映像も含まれますので、視聴は自己責任でお願いします。
