English Version
Nanarei Falls is said to be a haunted spot in Miyama, Fukuoka Prefecture, where there appear to have been numerous reports of hitodama—ghostly balls of light associated in Japanese folklore with wandering souls—as well as sightings of a woman’s spirit.
According to local legend, after the Taira clan was defeated at the Battle of Dan-no-ura, seven female court attendants from among the clan’s remaining survivors came to this waterfall and drowned themselves.
Other rumors say that human voices can be heard from nowhere, or that the sound of a woman quietly sobbing drifts through the area. If those stories are to be believed, perhaps these phenomena are seen as expressions of the seven women’s lingering grief and regret.
Location: 1089 Koda, Yamakawa-machi, Miyama, Fukuoka Prefecture.
If you visit, do so respectfully and in daylight when possible. Stay on public paths and safe viewing areas, avoid restricted or hazardous places, and be careful around waterfalls, where rocks and paths can be slippery.
