As covered previously in our look at Nazi Germany’s dark science and technology, German military engineering during World War II was often regarded as the most advanced in the world. This was not only a belief held by Hitler and the Nazi regime itself, but also by the Allied nations fighting against them.
One of the most feared examples was the V-2 missile. For Britain at the time, its deployment was terrifying. The V-2 is said to have carried a warhead with roughly one ton of explosives, traveled at around Mach 4, and used an automatic control system for guidance. In practical terms, there was almost no effective way to defend against it.
The V-2 followed a ballistic path, re-entering the atmosphere before striking the British mainland. With a range of about 400 kilometers, it became a prototype for modern intercontinental ballistic missiles. Of the roughly 6,000 V-2 rockets produced during the war, around 3,000 are said to have been launched, showing just how central this weapon became to Nazi strategy.
But Hitler’s obsession with weapons did not stop there. According to some accounts, Nazi Germany also attempted to develop aircraft shaped like the saucer-style craft we now associate with the word “UFO.”
Nazi Germany’s Extreme Weapons
Nazi Germany devoted enormous effort to developing so-called “superweapons” that other nations had not even imagined. Alongside architects and weapons firms connected to figures such as Albert Speer and Gustav Krupp, brilliant scientists—some of whom later went to the United States through Operation Paperclip—worked on weapons considered cutting-edge for their time.
Strangely, many of these concepts were said to have begun with “Hitler’s ideas.” It is widely believed that, during the period when Hitler was arrested and imprisoned while attempting to seize power, he absorbed an extraordinary amount of knowledge through heavy reading.
At the same time, Hitler himself reportedly spoke at times of receiving “spiritual teachings,” and some of his ideas were said to have emerged from these experiences.
The Giant Railway Guns “Gustav” and “Dora”
The railway guns known as “Gustav” and “Dora,” also called the 80 cm railway guns, were monstrous weapons developed by Krupp. Their size was so abnormal that they seemed to belong in science fiction.
The barrel was over 32 meters long. The weapon weighed around 1,350 tons, and the caliber of the gun was 800 millimeters, or 80 centimeters. It reportedly required more than 1,400 operators and over 4,000 support personnel.
The gun could fire high-explosive shells weighing as much as seven tons, making its destructive power easy to imagine. Development initially took six years, from 1934 to 1940, and three units were planned. In the end, only two were completed: the first, “Gustav,” and the second, “Dora.”
Despite the incredible scale of these weapons, changing battlefield conditions and the difficulty of operating them limited their use. Their major combat deployment came in June 1942 during the attack on the Sevastopol fortress in Crimea. There, their power was reportedly proven when they created craters as deep as 30 meters underground and temporarily devastated Soviet positions.
The V-3, Known as the “Centipede Gun”
Under the Nazi regime, Germany’s rocket and aircraft technology was considered unmatched. After the V-2 came another weapon project: the V-3, a multi-charge rocket artillery system nicknamed the “Centipede Gun.”
By this point, Nazi Germany had expanded into France, and the weapon was designed once again with Britain in mind. From the French coast, it was intended to bombard the British mainland.
The idea reportedly came from a Dr. Conders of Stahlwerke, and Hitler approved it. He then ordered a total of 50 guns to be built into the slopes of the mountainous Calais region in France.
To disguise the project from outsiders, it was developed under the codename “High Pressure Pump,” making it appear to be related to pump technology. The weapon used a multi-stage gunpowder acceleration system. By igniting charges placed along both sides of the barrel in sequence, it aimed to achieve a staggering muzzle velocity of 1,464 meters per second.
Its planned range was around 150 kilometers. If it had been fully deployed, Britain might have faced a rain of shells from across the Channel.
However, technical problems remained unresolved during development. By 1940, the military situation had worsened, and the V-3 ultimately became a phantom weapon that was never fully realized.
The Smaller V-2: C2 “Wasserfall”
As mentioned earlier, the V-2 was the world’s most advanced missile technology at the time. Nazi Germany also developed a smaller missile known as the C2, or “Wasserfall.”
It reportedly carried a fully automatic infrared guidance system. In terms of performance, some accounts claim it had already surpassed the Nike Ajax, one of the most advanced American rocket weapons after the war. Because of this, information on Wasserfall was treated as top-secret.
But Nazi Germany’s imagination, shaped by occult trends, mysticism, and stories of mysterious voices, did not stop there.
The Nazi “UFO Fighter” Plan
This brings us to the central legend: Nazi Germany’s alleged plan to develop a disc-shaped fighter aircraft.
German aircraft technology continued to evolve before the war, during the war, and right up to the end. This progress was driven by brilliant scientists, Hitler’s ideas, and the wartime pressure to produce new weapons.
Among the real aircraft projects were the Horten H IX Ho 229, a tailless jet aircraft often described as a forerunner of the B-2 stealth bomber, and the Triebflügel, an early vertical takeoff aircraft sometimes linked to the later idea of VTOL aircraft used by the modern U.S. military.
However, many of these projects began too close to the end of the war and were abandoned before they could be completed.
One of the strangest was a circular-wing propeller aircraft said to have been designed and modeled by Arthur Sack, a farmer and aircraft modeler. It became known as the Sack AS-6.
The Sack AS-6: A Nazi-Era Saucer Aircraft
From the side, this odd aircraft looked like an ordinary propeller plane. But because its overall wing shape was circular, from certain angles it resembled what many people today would call a “UFO.”
The aircraft was designed around the idea of vertical takeoff and landing using a piston engine. Thrust was provided by the propeller, while altitude control during takeoff and landing was supposedly handled through the circular wing and its propeller system.
The project began after Sack entered the aircraft in a powered model airplane contest in 1939. Ernst Udet, then the air minister, reportedly praised the design. As a result, Sack’s idea gained support from German aircraft firms and military authorities, who were at the cutting edge of aviation development at the time.
The AS series is said to have reached six aircraft in total. The first was the AS-1 model, followed by four prototypes from AS-2 through AS-5, developed with specialist companies and the military.
In practice, however, the aircraft suffered from many technical and control-related problems. Although the design was successfully enlarged, even the final AS-6 never reached a practical operational level.
The last test flight reportedly took place in 1944. Under the complicated conditions of wartime, the aircraft was eventually destroyed in an American air raid sometime between the end of that year and 1945.
In conclusion, this does not mean that the Nazis were literally trying to build a “UFO” in the alien-spacecraft sense. Rather, among their many experimental aircraft, there was a disc-shaped plane. It is also said that there is no evidence Hitler was directly involved with this specific aircraft.
The Phantom UFO and the Superweapons That Never Were
For many people in Japan, the word “UFO” brings to mind an alien spacecraft: a mysterious circular object moving at high speed. Strictly speaking, however, UFO means “unidentified flying object.” It does not necessarily mean a flying saucer, and it does not automatically imply aliens.
As a related note, Japan’s famous Zero fighter was developed after Japanese observers visited Germany, then an allied nation, and studied its advanced aircraft technology.
The Nazi disc-plane projects may not match the familiar pop-culture image of a UFO. Still, it is undeniable that some Nazi-era aircraft concepts anticipated later developments, such as VTOL aircraft and stealth bomber designs.
After the war, officers and researchers in several countries reportedly said that if Nazi Germany had completed these studies and weapons before its defeat, the course of the war might have been uncertain. That is how advanced—and how unsettling—the regime’s military research and imagination were said to be.

ナチス・ドイツの黒い科学技術 でも以前に紹介したが、第二次世界大戦当時の軍事技術はナチスドイツが世界一だと言われていた。この認識はヒトラーを始めとしたナチスドイツも自負していた他、敵対していた連合国側にも共通しているものであった。特にV2ミサイルなどの最新兵器の実践配備は当時イギリスにとっては恐怖の対象になっていた。理由として、V2ミサイルの性能は爆薬量が約1トンの弾頭、飛行速度はマッハ4と言われており、さらに自動制御システムによって誘導されていたため、実質的な防御手段が全くなかったのである。
さらに、このV2ロケットは着弾前に大気圏突入をし、そこからイギリス本土を襲っていた。射程距離は約400キロメートルに及び、 現在の大陸間弾道ミサイルの原型 になっている。戦時中の発射されたV2ロケットは生産された6000発の内、約3000発と言われており、如何にこの兵器が有効だったのかを示しているだろう。しかし、ヒトラーの兵器に対する執着と発想はこれに留まらなかった。。一説によると、現在で言う 「UFO」タイプの円盤型飛行機なども開発しようとしていた と言われている。
。ナチスが開発したヤバ過ぎる兵器達。。画像引用元： 。ナチスドイツは他国の考えが及ばないようないわゆる「超兵器」の開発に余念がなかった。アルベルト・シュペーアやグスタフ・クルップといった建築、軍事開発会社に加えてペーパークリップ作戦で渡米した天才科学者たちによって、当時最新鋭と言われた数々の兵器開発を行なっている。不思議なことに、開発のキッカケになるのはほとんどが「ヒトラーの発想」であったという。。ヒトラーは政権獲得を目指していた間に一度逮捕、収監されており、この時期に膨大な読書によって常人離れした知能を吸収し補ったことが定説になっている。
しかし、 ヒトラー自身が言うには時々「霊的な教え」 があり、それをアイデアとして口にすることもあったそうだ。列車型移動巨大兵器「グスタフ」「ドーラ」（80cm列車砲）。上に画像は実際のドーラ砲を写真に収めた貴重な1枚である。ドーラ砲とは、 クルップ社によって開発された規格外の化け物兵器 であり、SFの世界を連想させるような異様な大きさであった。砲身の長さは32メートルを超え、重量は1350トン、さらに砲塔の口径は800ミリ（80センチ）となっており、砲操作要員に1400人以上、支援要員は4000人以上が必要だったという。
榴弾においては7トンの砲弾が搭載可能であり、その威力は想像に難しくない。開発は当初1934年から1940年までの6年間を費やし、実際には3基が製造予定であった。しかし、実際に製造されたのは1両目の「グスタフ」と2両目の「ドーラ」の2基に留まった。ここまでの規模の兵器を開発しながら、戦況の変化や運用の難しさから数々の配備が検討されたものの、本格的な実戦では1942 年6月のクリミア半島において 「 セバストポリ要塞攻撃」 に使用された。しかし、その威力は証明され、地下30メートルという深さまでのクレーターを作り、当時のソ連軍を一時的に壊滅に追い込んだ。
通称ムカデ砲と呼ばれた「V3号ロケット」。。画像引用元： 。ナチス政権下において、ロケットや航空機技術は他の追随を許さなかったが、V2ロケット後に開発されていたのが、通称ムカデ砲と呼ばれる「V3号火薬連結式ロケット砲」であった。当時、フランスまで領土拡大を成功させていたナチスドイツは、 フランスの沿岸からまたしても「対イギリス」を想定してこのロケット砲を開発 していた。発案したのは シュタールヴェルケ社のコンダー博士という人物であり、ヒトラーがこの案を採用してフランスのカレー地方にある 山間部の傾斜に合計で50門の建設設置を命じた という。
。外部にはポンプ開発だと偽装するために高圧ポンプという作戦名によって開発を進めていった。この怪物兵器は多重の火薬による加速システムを採用しており、両側に設置された火薬庫の連続点火によって、初速で「 1,464メートル/毎秒」という驚異的な速度を実現しようとしていた。射程距離は150キロに及び、実際に完全配備がなされていれば、イギリスはこの砲弾の豪雨を受けた可能性も充分にあった。。しかし、開発段階での課題点が解決出来ないまま、1940年には戦況が悪化し 結果的には実現しなかった幻の兵器 となっている。
小型V2ロケット「C2（ヴァッサーファル）」。ナチスドイツのV2ロケットが当時世界最先端のミサイル技術であった ことは前述したが、このV2ミサイルをさらに小型化したC2と呼ばれるミサイルもナチスドイツでは開発されていた。赤外線による完全な自動誘導システムを搭載しており、性能面では「戦後のアメリカ」における最高レベルのロケット兵器であった「ナイキ・エージャックス」と呼ばれるものよりも、戦時中にすでに超えていたという。このことから、ヴァッサーファルの情報は完全な機密情報として扱われていたという。
。しかし、オカルトブームや神秘学に加えて「謎の声」に傾倒していたナチス・ドイツの発想はこれだけに留まらなかったのだ。ナチスによる「UFO型戦闘機開発計画」とは？。。ここからは本題であるナチスドイツによる円盤型戦闘機の開発計画について紹介していこう。ナチスドイツの航空機技術は数々の天才科学者や、ヒトラーの発想などを含めて戦前～戦時中～終戦に至るまで進化の一途を辿っていた。この中には B2ステルス爆撃機の原型 になった「 ホルテン H IX Ho２２９ 」と呼ばれる 無尾翼ジェット機や、現在、米軍が使用している「ＶＴＯＬ（垂直離着陸可能な機体）」の原型になった「トリープフリューゲル」という 元祖「垂直上昇機」 なども実際に開発が進められていた。
。しかし、開発が始まった期間が終戦に近かったため、多くの計画は頓挫してしまっている。その中にあったのが、農民で飛行機モデラーでもあった アルトゥール・ザックが設計モデリングをしたと言われる「レシプロエンジンを使用した円形翼のプロペラ機」である通称「ザックAS-6 」というモデルがある。。この飛行機は垂直離着陸を可能にしたレシプロエンジンでの開発を想定され、実際に開発が行われていた。ナチス型UFO「ザックAS-6」。。画像引用元： 。この奇妙な形をした飛行機は横から見ると普通のプロペラ機に見えるが、 全体が特殊な円形翼をしている為、少し角度が傾くと、いわゆる「UFO」のような姿 になる。
そして、離着陸も円形翼によって制御を試みており、推力（進む力）はプロペラ、離着陸などの高度調整を円形翼に搭載したプロペラで調整をしていたと言われている。開発が始まった経緯は1939年の動力つき飛行機モデルコンテストに、ザックがこの飛行機を持ち込んだところ、当時の空軍大臣であったエルンスト・ウーデットに評価され、ザックの発想は当時最先端であったドイツの各航空機開発企業や軍部のバックアップを得られることになった。ASシリーズは全部で6機まで制作されたと言われており、初代はモデルになったAS-1、そこからAS-2～AS-5まで合計で4回の試作機を専門の企業や軍部と共に開発していったが、実際には制御関連の問題において技術問題や課題が多数発生し、 大型化には成功したものの最終機体であるAS-6も実用化レベルまでには至らなかった のである。
実際には最後のテスト飛行が行われていたのは1944年であり、戦時下においての問題など複雑な事情が絡んだ結果、同年末から翌年1945年の間に米軍の空襲によって機体自体が破壊されてしまっている。結論から言えばナチスが「UFO」を作ろうとしたのではなく、多くの試作機の中に円盤型の飛行機が存在していたということになる。さらに言えば、この円盤型飛行機には直接ヒトラーが関わったという証拠はなかったとされている。。幻に終わったUFOと超兵器。UFOというと日本人の感覚では宇宙人の乗り物であったり、円形で高速移動する謎の物体であるというイメージが強いが、正式な意味は「未確認飛行物体」であり、円盤型に特定されたり、宇宙人の乗り物を定義するものではない。
ちなみに、日本で最強と言われた「零戦」の開発経緯では当時の同盟国であった日本がドイツに視察に行かせており、高度な飛行機技術を学んだとされている。UFOという既存の円盤イメージや固定観念には当てはまらないが。「ＶＴＯＬ」や「B2ステルス爆撃機」のような現での最先端戦闘機のモデルになった航空機があったことは紛れもない事実だった。。戦後、各国の士官や研究者は超兵器も含めて 「ナチス・ドイツがこれらの研究を終戦以前に完成させていたとしたら、戦争の行方はわからなかった」 と言うほど、ナチスの研究者技術・発想は優れていたのである
