Dogs are some of the closest animals to humans, so the phrase “dogs committing suicide” sounds shocking. Yet in Scotland, there is a bridge surrounded by rumors that dogs have leapt from it while out on walks with their owners.

What Is the Bridge Where Dogs Are Said to Jump?
The bridge in question is Overtoun Bridge in Scotland, a stone bridge said to stand about 15 meters high. It is also known by the nickname “Dog’s Leap.”
The strange phenomenon is said to have first appeared around 1950. It began drawing wider attention around the world in 2005, when reports claimed that as many as 50 dogs had jumped from the bridge over a period of about 50 years. If true, that would mean roughly one dog per year—an unusually high number.
One Reported Incident
In 1995, a woman named Donna Cooper was walking her dog, Ben. According to the story, it was a clear, sunny day, and the walk seemed completely normal.
But when they reached Overtoun Bridge, Ben reportedly became restless, as if something had suddenly caught his attention. Then, without warning, he ran forward, went over the side, and fell about 15 meters to the river below.
Witnesses reportedly described the dog as seeming as though it had been drawn toward something.
But is it really possible for dogs to “commit suicide”? Or is something else happening at this bridge?
Possible Explanations for the “Cursed Dog Bridge”
Several theories have been suggested over the years.
The Sight Theory
One idea is that the dogs may have seen something that attracted them.
However, according to this theory, there was nothing obvious in the area that would normally capture a dog’s attention. For that reason, some people believe sight alone is unlikely to explain the incidents.
The Sound Theory
Dogs can hear sounds that humans cannot. There is said to be a naval port several kilometers from the area, and some have wondered whether noises such as submarine sonar could have stimulated or confused the dogs.
This remains only a theory.
The Smell Theory
Dogs have an incredible sense of smell—often said to be more than 100,000 times stronger than that of humans. Because of this, another theory suggests that the dogs may have reacted to a scent that strongly attracted them.
Animals such as mink, rats, and squirrels are said to live around the area, and their smells could potentially draw a dog’s attention.
Still, it is hard to understand why a smell alone would cause a dog to leap from a height of 15 meters.
The Evil Spirit Theory
There is also a darker rumor connected to the bridge.
In 1994, a man named Kevin Moy reportedly threw his infant son from the bridge. Afterward, he is said to have tried to jump from the bridge himself, but was stopped by his wife.
Because of this tragedy, some people whisper that the ghost of the child may be calling dogs toward the drop.
There are also ghost stories connected to nearby Overtoun House, a 19th-century mansion. Spirits said to be those of Baron John White and his wife have reportedly been seen there.
Since the house dates back to the 19th century, some speculate that hunting may once have been part of life in the area, possibly with the use of hunting dogs. Because of that, another rumor suggests that dog breeds similar to hunting dogs may be more likely to become victims.
What Recent Investigations Have Suggested
Later investigations reportedly found that the dogs tended to jump from a specific point on the bridge, and that certain types of dogs appeared more often in the stories.
According to these reports, long-snouted breeds such as collies and golden retrievers were among the dogs most often involved.
The Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has reportedly described the reason dogs jump from the bridge as a “painful mystery.”
Final Thoughts
Overtoun Bridge remains one of Scotland’s strangest modern legends: a beautiful real-world location wrapped in grief, rumor, animal behavior theories, and ghost stories.
Today, warning signs are said to have been installed, and reports of these tragic incidents appear to have decreased. Even so, the true cause has never been clearly confirmed.

犬の鼻の良さを考えると十分にあり得る説です。。現場周辺には、犬の注意を引く臭いを発する動物として、ミンクやネズミ、リスなどが生息していることが判明しました。しかし、匂いだけで犬が15メートルもの高さから飛び降りるなど考えられるのでしょうか？。【悪霊説】。。1994年にケビン・モイという人物が、赤ん坊の息子を橋の上から投げ落とすという事件が発生しました。。その後、ケビン・モイ自身もその橋から身を投げようとしたところ、妻に止められ思いとどまったそうです。
