After a major earthquake in Japan, people often start talking about so-called “earthquake clouds” and other strange signs said to appear beforehand.
These supposed precursors are sometimes grouped under the term “macroscopic anomalous phenomena”: unusual things people notice in the sky, sea, animals, wells, or atmosphere before a quake. But are they real warnings, or just fear finding patterns after the fact?
This is a look at earthquake clouds and other unsettling “omens” that have been reported in Japan.
Scientifically, Earthquake Clouds Have No Solid Evidence
When it comes to earthquakes and supposed precursor phenomena, most are currently considered to have no scientific basis.
Earthquake clouds in particular are generally treated by scientists as unsupported. There is no reliable method for predicting earthquakes by looking at clouds.
Still, earthquake clouds are only one part of a much wider set of strange phenomena people have reported before major quakes, including:
- Radio interference
- Changes in well water levels
- Deep-sea fish appearing near the surface
- Dolphins or whales beaching themselves
- A red-looking moon
- Bubbles rising from the seafloor
- Crows crying unusually loudly
There have also been reports of clouds turning rainbow-colored. In some cases, this may simply be a known weather phenomenon called iridescent clouds. In others, people have wondered whether something abnormal was happening. At present, that connection has not been proven.
These kinds of reports are not a recent internet trend. They were also recorded around the time of the Great Kanto Earthquake, which struck on September 1, 1923, at 11:58 a.m.
A book collecting such earthquake-related reports was published in 1976: When Earthquakes Happen: The Catfish Knew After All by Yoshitsugu Kamei. Unfortunately, it is no longer available new, though used copies may still be found.
According to excerpts from that book, the following were described as possible signs before the quake:
- Air tremors or booming sounds
- Rats moving in unusual ways
- Lake Yamanaka becoming cloudy
- An unusually good pear harvest
- Rice growing differently than usual
- Wells drying up
- Bubbles rising from the seafloor
- Dogs howling strangely
- Crabs moving in groups
- A phenomenon in which currents at the sea surface and seafloor seemed to flow in opposite directions
- A red moon
- Dark black clouds and bright red clouds
Not every one of these was necessarily an earthquake precursor. But the fact remains that many strange things were said to have overlapped around that disaster.
Many of the reports involved clouds, the moon, or unusual colors in the sky—the same kinds of things people still describe today as “maybe a sign.”
So Are Earthquake Clouds Really Impossible?
Most macroscopic anomaly reports, including earthquake clouds, are said to lack scientific evidence. But does that mean they have absolutely no connection to earthquakes?
That is where the subject becomes difficult.
Science has explained a great deal about how earthquakes happen. But when it comes to these strange, everyday observations, the more accurate statement may be: “A causal relationship has not been confirmed by current science.”
That is different from saying, “There is definitely no relationship at all.”
Of course, this does not mean people can predict earthquakes by watching clouds, animals, or the moon. They cannot. It may be better to think of these reports as something that makes people wonder “maybe…” when several unusual things happen at once—not as a warning system.
Before the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, some people reportedly posted online about strange skies, including comments such as:
- “The whole sky is glowing blue.”
- “The space between the clouds is shining rainbow-colored.”
- “The clouds are swirling.”
Even if science cannot prove these were connected to the quake, some people felt they had seen something unusual.
The following is the story of one person who experienced the magnitude 9.0 earthquake in Ishinomaki City.
The Strange Atmosphere on the Morning of March 11
This account comes from someone who was living in Ishinomaki City on March 11, 2011, the day of the Great East Japan Earthquake.
“On the morning of March 11, I woke up around 8 a.m. and went out into the yard. When I looked up at the sky, I felt like the weather was somehow abnormal.
“It was cloudy, but the color was strange, like it didn’t feel like morning at all. In the distance, there were heavy-looking clouds, vague and dark, swirling around.
“One of my neighbors happened to come outside, and I remember us saying to each other, ‘The weather feels weird, doesn’t it?’ It was the kind of sky that made you lose your sense of the season and even the time of day.
“I had lived in Ishinomaki since I was born, but I had never seen anything like it.
“A few days earlier, there had been a fairly large earthquake, and smaller tremors had continued, so I wondered if that was why. Even so, the atmosphere outside felt bizarre. The air felt heavy, and the sense of the season felt wrong.
“At that moment, I felt something truly strange. Just in case, I went to fill up the car with gas, then bought bread, snacks, baked goods, and water.
“Normally, I would never do something like that. But that day, I instinctively felt, ‘I should buy these now.’
“On the way to the store, animals were darting out from odd places, and a neighborhood dog that was usually very quiet was barking nonstop. Something was clearly different.
“And then, in the afternoon, that massive earthquake happened.”
After the disaster, this person moved to western Japan and still lives there today. They said the scenes they witnessed after the earthquake were enough to make them leave Ishinomaki, the place they had known for so long.
They also said they still cannot forget the strange atmosphere they felt that morning.
Final Thoughts
Some people say earthquake clouds do not exist. Scientifically, there is no reliable evidence that clouds can predict earthquakes.
At the same time, it is also true that people have reported strange cloud shapes, unusual skies, animal behavior, and other eerie phenomena before major disasters.
Japan is a country where earthquakes are a real part of life, and future major quakes, including the long-discussed Nankai Trough earthquake, remain a serious concern.
If you are traveling in Japan, do not rely on rumors, clouds, or “omens” for safety. Follow official alerts from the Japan Meteorological Agency, local governments, hotels, and transportation staff. Know where emergency exits are, keep your phone charged, and if you feel strong shaking or see an official tsunami warning, move to higher ground immediately.
Still, there is something quietly unsettling about the idea that the natural world might whisper before it breaks.

大きな地震が来た後に注目されるのが 「地震雲」 などを始めとする前兆現象です。地震の前兆として現れる前兆現象の事を「宏観異常現象(こうかんいじょうげんしょう)」とか「宏観現象(こうかんげんしょう)」と言うのですが、本当にそんなことがあると思いますか?。今回は、地震雲などの予兆についてのお話です。。公開日：2019年10月27日 更新日：2020年2月24日 。地震雲などの宏観異常現象は科学的には「根拠がない」けど…。。地震を始めとする宏観異常現象ですが、ほとんどの現象が 現段階では「根拠はない」 といわれています。
特に地震雲に関しては「ない」というのが、科学的な見解です。。でも、地震雲以外にも宏観異常現象と呼ばれている現象は結構たくさんあって、。。電波障害 井戸の水位 深海魚が上がる イルカやクジラが座礁する 月が赤い 海底から泡が湧いてくる カラスが異常に鳴く などなど…、雲が虹色に染まる現象も報告されていますが、これに関しては、彩雲という気象現象がたまたま起っただけなのか、それともなんらかの異常で色が変わっているのかは今は解明できていません。
このような宏観異常現象は、最近になって注目され始めたものではありません。大正12年9月1日11時58分の関東大震災でも、様々な宏観異常現象が記録されています。その宏観異常現象を集めた本が出版されているんです。。。それが。「地震の起こるとき―やっぱりナマズは知っていた (1976年)」亀井 義次 (著) 。という本なのですが、残念ながら、今はもう新品で手に入れることはできません。中古なら購入できるので、興味がある方は是非、読んでみてください。
この本に書かれている地震の前兆とされている内容を抜粋すると。空振。ネズミの移動。山中湖が濁った。梨が豊作。稲の生育がいつもと違った。井戸が枯れた。海底から泡。犬が異常な遠吠えをした。カニが集団で移動した。海面と海底の潮が逆に流れる 悪潮現象。月が赤い。どす黒い雲と真っ赤な雲。参考資料 「地震の起こるとき―やっぱりナマズは知っていた (1976年)」 。といったもの…。このすべてが宏観異常現象ではないかもしれませんが、これだけの異常現象が重なっていたわけです。
雲や月の色にに関わる宏観異常現象も多く、現代で「 前兆かもしれない 」と言われている現象も含まれていますよね。本当に地震雲はないの?やっぱり地震の前には前兆があるの?。。地震雲などの宏観異常現象のほとんどが、科学的な根拠はないと言われていますが、本当に地震との関係はないのでしょうか。まず、地震雲などの宏観異常現象が「科学的に根拠がない」からといって、絶対に地震との関係がないかと言われれば、必ずしもそうでないかもしれませんよね。よく考えてみてください。
科学で証明できることって、自然の中のほんの一部の現象でしかないはずな んです。。地震のメカニズムは解明されていますが、宏観異常現象に関しては「関係ない」のではなく正しくは「 今の科学では因果関係が不明 」といったほうが正しいんじゃないでしょうか。科学で証明できることは、地球で起っていることのほんの一部にすぎません。。つまり、科学で 証明できない＝関係ない と決めつけてしまうのはちょっと乱暴。もちろん、宏観異常現象に頼って地震予知ができる訳ではありませんが、いろんな 宏観異常現象が重なったら「もしかしたら…」と思う位のものと捉えてもよさそう です。
。実際に、東日本大震災の前に投稿されたツイートでも。「空が全体的に青く光っている」 。「雲と雲の間が虹色に光っている」 。「雲が渦巻いている」 。というツイートがいくつもありました。つまり、科学で証明できなくても、異常を知らせる現象があったと言ってもいいでしょう。そして、あのマグニチュード9の地震を石巻市で体験した方の話しをご紹介します。東日本大震災の日の午前中に感じた違和感…。。東日本大震災が起った2011年3月11日に石巻市に住んでいて被災した方の体験談です。
「3月11日の朝、8時頃に起きて庭に出た時に空を見上げたときになんというか 異常な天気 だなと感じました。曇っていたんですけど、 色がまるで朝ではないみたいな変な色 で、遠くにはぼんやりしした重い色の雲が渦巻いていました。たまたま外に出できたお隣さんと「 なんか変な天気だよね 」と話しをしたことを覚えています。季節感と時間の感覚が全くなくなってしまったような空でした。生まれたときからずっと石巻に住んでいましたけど、こんなことは初めてでした。
。。何日か前に大き目の地震があって、小さな地震が続いていたのでそのせいかとも思いましたが、それにしても外の雰囲気は異様。空気も重いし季節感も妙な感じ…。。この時、本当に異様なものを感じて、念のためにとガソリンを満タンにしに行って、パンやお菓子、焼き菓子や水を買いに行きました。いつもならこんなことは絶対にしませんけど、この時ばかりは「 買っておいた方がいい 」と直感的に思ったんです。買い物に行く途中でも、 妙なところから動物が飛び出てきたり、いつもは本当に大人しい近所の犬が吠えまくっていたりと明らかに何かが変 でした。
そして、午後になって、あの大地震が起ったんです。」。。この方は、地震を気に西日本に引っ越しをして今も西日本に住んでいらっしゃいます。住み慣れた石巻を離れたくなるほどの光景を地震の後に見てしまったそうです。そして、あの日の朝感じた異常な空気感は今でも忘れられないと仰っています。まとめ。地震雲…「そんなものはない」という人もいますが、実際におかしな形の雲が報告されているのも事実です。いつか必ず来ると言われている南海トラフ巨大地震でも、そういった現象がもしかしたら出で来るかもしれません。
。空をよく観察していたら、もしたしたらこの前兆に気付くことができるかも…
