One element that cannot be ignored when discussing the ancient nuclear war theory is the existence of so-called “out-of-place artifacts,” often shortened to OOPArts.

These objects range from items that are simply mysterious to things that appear, at least at first glance, to suggest traces of ancient technology. Some famous examples, such as the Mitchell-Hedges crystal skull, are now widely suspected of being fabrications. Others, however, remain wrapped in uncertainty.

Of course, an object being “mysterious” does not automatically prove the existence of an ancient super-civilization. Still, some murals left at ruins and certain excavated artifacts seem to hint at a level of knowledge or technology that feels strangely advanced for their time.

Below are several mysterious OOPArts often discussed in connection with ancient technology, along with the background behind them.

An Ancient Astronaut on a Sarcophagus?

One famous theory concerns a sarcophagus found at the ruins of Palenque in Mexico. Some people claim that the relief carved on it shows an ancient human riding inside a rocket.

Personally, I am skeptical of this particular OOPArt interpretation.

When the image is viewed horizontally, the figure can look as if it is straddling some kind of machine. But when viewed vertically, as one would normally look at a coffin lid, it appears more like a person lying on a sacrificial altar.

There are many other clay figures and statues that bring to mind space suits or helmets. Among the examples most often described as suggesting “space technology” are Japan’s goggle-eyed dogu from the Sannai-Maruyama site and a so-called space-suit figure said to have been found at the Jama site in Ecuador.

Many readers may have seen the goggle-eyed dogu in textbooks. One theory says it represents a plump female figure. Even so, its highly distinctive eyes feel unusual if they are meant to depict ordinary human eyes, and the proportions of its arms and legs do not preserve a very human-like balance.

Those who argue that the goggle-eyed dogu is not human often point out that it does not seem to fit neatly into the Jomon culture that produced it. Looking closely at images of it, the figure can feel truly bizarre. It gives a strong impression of either advanced symbolism, unfamiliar technology, or perhaps a Jomon attempt to depict “another kind of human.”

The figure from the Jama site, meanwhile, is said to look very much like a space suit. Since we know little about the clothing and ornaments of that time, there is not much solid evidence to support the claim. Still, its form resembles a modern suit or protective outfit more than a simple ancient costume.

At the very least, these two figures do not give the impression of ordinary clothing or everyday appearance from their respective periods. To many people, their designs and shapes feel surprisingly modern.

Traces of Ancient Firearms?

OOPArts that suggest modern technology are not limited to figures that look as though they are wearing space suits.

In the 1950s, in Escheldorf, Germany, an object resembling a bullet was reportedly discovered inside the trunk of a tree said to be around 3,000 years old. This alleged OOPArt, covered in gold, had been broken apart after excavation when it was first found, but later reconstruction revealed a shape that looked like a bullet.

As a bullet, it would be an old-fashioned size, and because it had gold decoration, some have suggested it may have been an object used in ritual practices instead.

Even stranger than this supposed bullet is a Neanderthal skull said to have been found at Brottenhill in Africa. The skull reportedly has a hole near the left temple that resembles a gunshot wound, which has made it controversial.

The Neanderthal period is generally placed around 150,000 to 30,000 years ago, long before recorded history. In the study of fossil skulls, dating methods are often used to estimate the age of early humans and related species.

If this skull truly dates to the Neanderthal era, then some force in the Paleolithic period was powerful enough to open a hole in the skull. Some explanations point to an accident or conflict from that time. But if that were the case, one might expect damage around the surrounding area as well.

The hole in this skull is described as being very clean and focused, almost as if it had been shot straight through.

A Celestial Calculator from Before the Common Era

Around 1900, an ancient shipwreck was discovered near the Greek island of Antikythera. Among the many ancient artifacts recovered from it was something that looked like a box made of stone.

Several years after the discovery, the archaeologist Spyridon Stais is said to have noticed something inside the object that resembled gears. Decades later, in the 1950s, Cambridge University professor Derek Price disassembled and carefully examined the artifact. In 1974, a book titled Gears from the Greeks helped make the object known around the world, and further research continued.

Because the gears had already corroded underwater, researchers worked to restore them and also analyzed the body of the device using X-rays and other methods. The mechanism is said to have been made around 80 BCE, and its interior was found to be an extremely precise machine composed of more than 70 large and small gears.

After researchers deciphered the ancient Greek inscriptions left on it, the device was identified as an ancient astronomical instrument.

Ancient Greece is often said to have had advanced knowledge of astronomy. Even so, what makes this OOPArt astonishing is the claim that by entering a date, the mechanism could show the positions of celestial bodies for that day.

A machine built before the Common Era that could display the movement of the heavens based on a date is impressive enough. But the deeper question is not only how advanced ancient astronomy was. It is also why such a machine needed to exist in the first place.

The Mystery Is Not Just Existence, but Necessity

There are many other OOPArts that seem out of place in the ancient world, including so-called data disks reportedly found in geological layers tens of thousands of years old. But the important question is why such things would have been necessary at all.

Put more simply: when considering theories of an ancient super-civilization, the key point may be the reason and background behind technologies and artifacts that should not have been needed in the ancient world.

With that in mind, the next step is to look more closely at ancient epics that describe what sound like specific weapons.
