Akita Prefecture has no shortage of places said to be haunted. One of the better-known spots is Sengan Tunnel, a long road tunnel that has become the subject of local ghost stories and unsettling rumors.
A tunnel known for serious accidents
Sengan Tunnel is located along the Akita Kaido in Tazawako Obonai, Senboku City, Akita Prefecture. It is often described as an accident-prone area, with multiple serious traffic accidents said to have occurred there, including fatal ones.
Because of those deaths, some people believe the spirits of those who died in the tunnel still wander inside. That reputation has helped make Sengan Tunnel one of Akita’s more famous haunted locations.
The ghost sighting most often mentioned is that of a woman. According to the rumor, a long-haired female spirit appears inside the tunnel, crawling upside down in a terrifying way.
Rumors of spirits buried alive
There is another story connected to Sengan Tunnel as well. Some say that many ghosts, supposedly buried alive, drift through the tunnel.
Sengan Tunnel is a long passage of about 2.5 kilometers, connecting Akita Prefecture and Iwate Prefecture. Even people who say they did not see a ghost have reported strange sensations while driving through it, such as feeling chills down their spine the entire time or developing a headache inside the tunnel.
Headaches and physical discomfort are often mentioned in stories about haunted places. In the case of Sengan Tunnel, some people speculate that the spirits wandering there may be connected to the accidents—or may even be trying to cause them.
That said, Sengan Tunnel is an active road, not a place to treat like an amusement attraction. If you pass through, do so safely: obey traffic rules, do not stop inside the tunnel, do not walk into it, and do not interfere with drivers or local residents.
According to local belief, visiting a haunted place too casually can have consequences. Some say the dead may follow people who seem likely to join them. If, after leaving Sengan Tunnel, you suddenly feel unwell in body or mind, then perhaps… something came back with you.
